woman is a 16-year-old foreign exchange student from china, who only came here to the u.s. eight months ago. describing this as a random and unprovoked attack. surveillance video does show the suspect approaching the victim as she was walking to school yesterday morning at the whitestone academy here on 12th avenue. police say he was wearing a surgical mask and surgical gloves and carrying a box cutter. he grabbed the young woman from behind and slashed her from her ear to her throat. he got away, and she was able to get up and run for help. state assemblyman ron kim is asking the city to examine whether there's a pattern developing of attacks on asian-americans. >> these patterns are very frightening to this community, who feel already somewhat targeted by some of these assailants. we want to make sure that our nypd pays attention to this and catches this. >> reporter: just spoke with the nypd a few moments ago. still no arrest in this case. the nypd says they are investigating, but there's no reason to think there's a link between this slashing and any other attacks. the teenager, tho
