south, we're joined by weather channel meteorologist jim cantore. jim, how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well, lester, after we talked to you this morning, we had a nuisance tropical storm, now you've got something that's potentially a game changer and intensifying to be close to a hurricane, believe it or not. we have a whole new set of problems to expect. dark and ominous skies behind me. that means the storm is coming in. right around midnight we expect landfall. the center of this thing, about 100 miles offshore right now. so it's coming in fast and furious. the weather will, too. we're talking about power outages, very heavy rain in through here. anybody that didn't tie down their boats now have to be racing to do that, as these winds have notched up to 65. they could be 70 or even farther ahead as we go to the next advisory. we've had record highs, about 27 right now. only one degree from the all-time high at indianapolis 500. all this warm weather, everybody wants to get in the water, and that's been very difficult to do. more than 100 people pulled from the waters o

coast, the weather channel's jim cantore is in its path. he's in st. simons island on georgia's atlantic coast. jim, what's happening there? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, jenna. it's a packed, packed st. simons island, too. it's hard to even get a place to walk around, especially during the afternoon. but this morning, not too bad. people are out taking a jog. it's low tide here. the wave action isn't too bad, but kerry mentioned in his package how many people had to be rescued yesterday. if you add up georgia, florida and south carolina, over 100 people had to be pulled from the waters. south carolina beaches remain closed. we expect the weather, obviously, to change from where it is right through here. the center about 180 miles offshore. but being the fact that it's subtropical means we will have an extended period of rain and wind beginning around midnight tonight and lasting all day memorial day. unfortunately, keeping a lot of these beach-goers inside. back to you. >> all right, jim cantore. jim, thank you very much. >> all right, let's turn now to the weather channel's

good evening. i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. a federal judge sentenced harry thomas jr. to 38 months in prison today. he stole more than $350,000 from city taxpayers, money that was supposed to go to youth sports programs. tom sherwoods at the d.c. courthouse with new reaction tonight. >> reporter: the judge said thomas betrayed the city and that he said requires significant time in prison. harry thomas jr. rushed past reporters into federal court to be sentenced for his theft of more than $350,000 in city funds and filing false income taxes for three years. prosecutors had sought a 46-month term. thomas had asked for 18 months. the judge said 38 months. >> i think today's sentence sent an important message that public corruption will not be tolerated in our city. harry thomas will now serve more than three years in prison. >> reporter: but first thomas's mother, a prominent political figure in her own right told judge john bates i humbly and passionately plead for mercy for my son. thomas himself said what is wrong? i broke the law. i humiliated my family. i humiliated my

committee which oversees alcohol sales rejected the mayor's proposal. chairman jim graham saying it wasn't a good idea for customers or neighborhoods near bars and there is little public transportation to fight drunk driving. >> there was concern expressed this will encourage drunk driving and that there is no ability of metro to increase the hours for bus and rail to 4:00 a.m. there were concerns expressed about noise, trash, nuisance, and other problems. >> reporter: the committee voted, 3-2, to kill the mayor's plan. graham also is considering an increase in taxes on alcohol to help fund social services, a move mayor gray opposes. >> i don't see anything wrong with the proposal we've advanced. when you look at other jurisdictions for example, there are other jurisdictions that do justice. there are people who are, you know, associated with night life in the district of columbia who would love to be able to see us extend the hours. it wouldn't be the first time we've done it. as i said, no new taxes also and i don't want to move introducing a new tax when i said i wouldn't do that
