wendy rieger. jim handly has the night off. >>> breaking news off the top. the john edwards corruption trial, a judge has declared a mistrial after jurors were only able to reach a decision on one of the six counts against him. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has the latest. >>> it was a stunning afternoon. the jury reached a verdict on only one count and didn't say what it was. the judge said keep trying and by the end of the afternoon the jury came back and said all we can agree on is one count on which we find john edwards not guilty. we can't agree on any of the others. so the judge as she had to do accepted that outcome and declared a mistrial on the other counts. now, the jury found john edwards not guilty of violating campaign finance laws in terms of money from a wealthy donor bunny mellon in the year 2008. why the jury made a distinction between that count and the others we don't know but consider for a moment what the charge was here. john edwards was accused of accepting these contributions illegally because the

barbara harrison in for jim handley. >> we begin with the heat and the cooldown to come. >> tracking those storms out west. >> we've had this heat and humidity all day right and yesterday and we're seeing that cold front approach and a number of severe thunderstorm to our west and especially north of the area. in fact, upstate north, they have a tornado watch. as far as this area goes, advancing very quickly to the east and northeast. you can see several clusters of thunderstorms and they are producing a lot of lightning. so they're still intensifying and we could be seeing some small hail with these as well. we have one little area to the south of hagerstown. that storm is its way to the northeast, moving away from i-81 toward 70 right now. so that will be crossing right over 70 in the next couple of minutes advancing to the north and east. a lot of heavy rain, frequent lightning, possible small hail and even some downpours is possible with some of the storms we'll be getting throughout the late afternoon and evening. i wanted to open it up and show you how long this line is. it ext

south, we're joined by weather channel meteorologist jim cantore. jim, how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well, lester, after we talked to you this morning, we had a nuisance tropical storm, now you've got something that's potentially a game changer and intensifying to be close to a hurricane, believe it or not. we have a whole new set of problems to expect. dark and ominous skies behind me. that means the storm is coming in. right around midnight we expect landfall. the center of this thing, about 100 miles offshore right now. so it's coming in fast and furious. the weather will, too. we're talking about power outages, very heavy rain in through here. anybody that didn't tie down their boats now have to be racing to do that, as these winds have notched up to 65. they could be 70 or even farther ahead as we go to the next advisory. we've had record highs, about 27 right now. only one degree from the all-time high at indianapolis 500. all this warm weather, everybody wants to get in the water, and that's been very difficult to do. more than 100 people pulled from the waters o

coast, the weather channel's jim cantore is in its path. he's in st. simons island on georgia's atlantic coast. jim, what's happening there? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, jenna. it's a packed, packed st. simons island, too. it's hard to even get a place to walk around, especially during the afternoon. but this morning, not too bad. people are out taking a jog. it's low tide here. the wave action isn't too bad, but kerry mentioned in his package how many people had to be rescued yesterday. if you add up georgia, florida and south carolina, over 100 people had to be pulled from the waters. south carolina beaches remain closed. we expect the weather, obviously, to change from where it is right through here. the center about 180 miles offshore. but being the fact that it's subtropical means we will have an extended period of rain and wind beginning around midnight tonight and lasting all day memorial day. unfortunately, keeping a lot of these beach-goers inside. back to you. >> all right, jim cantore. jim, thank you very much. >> all right, let's turn now to the weather channel's

friend meteorologist jim cantore is at the weather channel headquarters with that. hey, jim, good evening. >> three things we're watching for you this weekend. of course, it would be mice if we could take the tropical system and put it over a parched central florida. the biggest thing is the heat. this is going to be with us all weekend. secondly, severe, we're going to ramp up the tornado count, and the tropics. which are just in the formation starjs. first the heat, if we get to 95 degrees in indianapolis, that will be the hottest indianapolis 500 ever. you're talk about some 400 people out there enduring that heat. on sunday, the trough, which is bringing snow to west yellowstone, lips out and producing tornadoes, we think. minneapolis, omaha, possibly severe weather into chicago as we get into monday. and there's our tropical entity, trying to develop offshore wilmington, north carolina. a lot of models bring this back toward the west. they show up all these different colors here. that means some unsettled weather for the beaches, rip currents here, and potentially maybe good

destroying evidence. tom sherwood joins us now with the story. >> reporter: jim, this is a major development in this scandal. the treasurer, he could face up to 20 years in prison. for more than a year, federal authorities have been investigating gray's campaign finances and allegations of a shadow campaign of fake documents and unreported spending. it began in march, 2011, with allegations by former minor candidate suleman brown, that he was paid by gray operatives to attack then mayor adrian finty on the campaign trail in 2010. now in the first public action the u.s. attorney's office is charging the gray assistant treasurer thomas gore for making three straw donations and using fake names on the donations. say the candidate who got the fake donations was suleman brown. more seriously u.s. attorney ronald machen is charging gore with destruction of evidence including a spiral notebook. thomas gore who has indicated he plans to plead guilty to the criminal information papers, faces up to 20 years on the destruction of evidence felony. attorneys say that could give him an incenti

watrel is at national airport with reaction from the agency's board. >> reporter: well, jim, the 18-page report was issued by the department of transportation's inspector general's office and it questions mwa's policies on contracting and also how the board members use their personal expenses. as the massive $6 billion dulles rail construction project continues to take shape, there is controversy behind the scenes. in a preliminary report, federal investigators accuse metropolitan washington airport's authority board members of racking up questionable personal expenses and also handing out no big contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> the ig report tells us we have more to do to get to the level we all want and that's exactly how we're going to proceed. >> reporter: some of the spending irregularities discovered were $238 for wine, a $9200 plane ticket to prague, and three dinner bills that totaled $4800 in hawaii. even board chairman michael kurda was among those affected by the findings. investigators say his wife's employer the jenner & block law firm, was awarded a
