got a "news alert" on honda. hi, phil. >> reporter: hi, tyler. just a few minutes ago the national highway traffic safety administration wrapped up a conference call announcing that honda has agreed to pay two fines totalling $70 million for failing to notify the federal government and nitsa about incidents where there are injuries or accidents, 1,729 of these incidents over an 11-year period from 2003 to 2014. that fine the max of two $35 million fines means that honda's role has been wrapped up in terms of failing to let the federal government know about these incidents. as you take a look at shares of honda, let's be clear that there are still several other investigations involving air bags and other situations involving not only honda but other automakers in washington and with regard to these fines and these incidents, sue, the doj may be looking into whether or not there were some criminal action involved here. we don't know that for sure but we do know that some of this information has been shared with the doj. sue, back to you. >> all right, phil keep us posted. >>> burt wh

? >> well fred this recall impacts a wide range of vehicles by toyota honda and chrysler. and you have all of the vehicles impacted there on the screen. most of them are vehicles that were manufactured in the early 2000s. so just to explain even more the issue here is a faulty sensor. and what this faulty sensor does is it causes the air bags to deploy sometimes while the car is running, while the individual may be driving. or even causes the seatbelt to tighten. all of this happening without the car being involved in a crash. that's an issue. we do know that these vehicles were recalled for this issue before, but when the manufacturer made the fixes, apparently the fixes were not adequate because the problem was still occurring. so this is somewhat of a recall so to speak, in that they're trying to get the fixes complete so that this problem isn't happening. no deaths linked to this but there have been some injuries. now, to add, you know -- to add to the problems for people some 1 million vehicles involved in this current recall also happens to have the takata air bags in them. so if

toyota, general motors, honda, and other manufacturers. in 2014, nhtsa issued more than $126 million in civil penalties exceeding the total amount collected by the agency in all of its 43-year history. ensuring the safety of american motorists is a priority, but the public's trust has been shaken due to the record number of recalls this past year. almost 64 million vehicles were recalled in 2014, which is about three times the number of vehicles recalled in 2013. and the concerns many have about problems in the industry and at nhtsa. at after my repeated calls on the president to fill what had been a lengthy vacancy of the administrator position at nhtsa without a confirmed nhtsa for 389 days, i am glad to say that the commerce committee did its job to ensure that dr. mark rosekind was confirmed as administrator before the end of last year. however, there is much more work that needs to be done. the defects associated with genetically modified ignition switch recall and the takata air bag recalls were apparent failures with serious safety consequences that resulted in death and serious
