. horn. from iowa, jeff kaufmann. both of you, thank you for being with us. jeff: pleasure. jennifer: thank you. steven: and joining us are caitlin huey-burns and kenneth thomas. i want to ask you, at the end of the day, how many republican candidates will be in the field this year? jennifer: we're hosting a big republican leadership summit here in new hampshire in april. as of now, we have 18 speakers lined up who identify themselves as potential candidates for the spot. we are really excited about the breadth of our list of possible candidates. i think it is possibly the largest, most ever, most qualified field of presidential candidates that we have seen in my lifetime. folks i really starting to feel the energy. steven: jeff kaufmann, your take on the number? jeff: right now, we have about 14 that i would consider interacting with the republican party of iowa on a regular basis. we have inquiries from others. i don't think -- i don't know the answer to that yet. it continues to grow. i couldn't agree with jennifer strong enough. this diversey that we have across the political spe

, iowa. we are here at this brand-new ag summit. it is coveted by republican wannabes. that includes jeb bush. in his first to iowa in a long time. he was welcomed in hawkeye style today by the headline above the register that said "some of you bush skeptically -- the use -- view bush skeptically." and he was asked, is there bush fatigue in iowa? >> the iowans that i know are thoughtful and they want to get to know the candidates. my answer to your question is that i will go make my case. most people know my record as governor and my life experience, so i will get a fair hearing. >> we will be here tomorrow streaming live from jeb bush and other potential candidates. let's start with jeb. what are the stakes for him and what should people be looking for on this big trip? >> first of all, he has to prove that he is a conservative. there is a suspicion as you know, that he is not, that he is a moderate. he has to make that case. he started to do it in an aggressive way in florida. and he has to do the retail thing. you know, i saw him and las vegas, he was pretty good out there, but he was

selection committee. it will be in boone, iowa. invitations will be going out shortly. we are going to be asking all the candidates that are available. i have been getting some good feedback from some campaigns at this point. are we going to get them all? no, not realistic. we will have a stroll poll that looks a lot like previous straw polls. we tried to put together a family friendly fun event. it seems like a fair in many ways. i think we will have a strong fail -- field. we will attract some top-tier candidates. >> what does a job bush or scott walker have to participate in the straw poll? if they win, a raises expectations. if they lose it they will have to spend a lot of money in the process. why should they get involved? >> 20,000 enthusiastic activists, many leaders in their community. there is an opportunity here to cut across a large voting bloc. in terms of expectations, i think the candidate can manage those expectations. this is an opportunity for these candidates to get in front of activists, and ultimately it is a snapshot in time. as long as the campaigns manage thos

bushes went hard in iowa, and that hurt them in new hampshire. new hampshire voters tend to not just validate what iowa voters to. if you look culturally, you and i disagree about this -- i still think bush can be a strong iowa candidate -- he will be a strong candidate for this state. scott walker is here, doing a public isn't tomorrow. unless chris christie picks up the establishment vote here right now is going to be more towards jeb bush than anyone else. he's got that family history against him, but he's a good fit or this state. voters care about policy, and the guy wows on policy. >> i don't disagree with any of that. again back on our last college poll we did in february, jeb bush was in the lead, and also some very good numbers among republicans. one thing that really is a warning sign -- we asked about some deal killers -- 41% of her likely primary voters said his immigration stance is a potential deal killer for them -- 41% of republican likely primary voters. he will have to do some work to get it done. >> roundtable with the nashua chamber of commerce. first topics were

in iowa. the iowa caucuses typically appeal to more social conservative. huckabee had won that caucus in '08 and in 2012 rick santorum won as well. the question for ted cruz, can he broaden his appeal beyond those religious conservatives. put together coalition that could win in new hampshire, make him competitive in south carolina and run the table. that is a very, very big challenge for him. >> schieffer: you see him as a factor? >> he will be a factor because he will pull the field to the right. his position himself in unyielding conservative. someone that folks who are trying to vie for that same segmented of voters would have to pay attention to. when he takes a position, it will be interesting to see how the other candidates adjust to that whether they move towards him or move a little bit to his left. >> schieffer: do you agree with the poll, dan that it's wide open on republican? >> oh, yeah. we're going to see a lot of fluidity in these numbers month to month as some people rise and fall. scott walker had a good month at one point, ted cruz makes announcement his poll shows m

side. obviously for him, the path begins in iowa. the iowa caucuses typically favor somebody conservative. but he will face mike huckabee, former governor of arkansas who won the caucuses in 2008. probably rick santorum who won the caucuses in 2012, former senator from massachusetts, ben carson is a factor in this race, neurosurgeon who is a novice politically but lit up conservatives almost to the extend tell cruz has. a variety of people he has to jostle against just to get to, in a sense, the finals of this contest. manu: i wanted ask you about his path. if he wins iowa, to say he wins iowa, where does ted cruz go after that? those folks that you mentioned, santorum and hucker bee sort of petered out after they won the iowa caucus. dan: that's the dilemma that people run with sort of the notion he has, that they can't make it all the way. his view obviously is, iowa, new hampshire is not necessarily going thoob great for him probably but then south carolina might be. if he can then by then consolidate that conservative portion of the electorate he's betting, and part of wh

for the presidency but she was in 2012, particularly in all important iowa. she was a real contender for the presidency on to the republican side. michele bachmann won the straw poll in 2012. and in the middle of a very hard fought contest for iowa in 2012 when the republicans had this top tier female contender to win those caucuses. rick santorum former pennsylvania senator, who was competing for a lot of the same voters as michele bachmann, rick santorum hired a guy in iowa named jamie johnson to work on his campaign in that state. soon after that was announced, register" got hold of an e-mail jamie johnson had once sent in which he questioned whether it could really be god's will to have a woman rule the institution of state? mr. johnson basically said it would be against god's will for a woman to be president. and if a woman were elected president, it would put the lives of america's children in danger. when that happened in 2012, the michele bachmann campaign were furious. they were furious. they said rick santorum was using a sexist strategy against michele bachmann in iowa. th
