on the second day of preliminary hearing for her accused killer. vic lee is live at the hall of justice with the latest on the story. >> reporter: there has been a lot of speculation about that, the fact that the gun francisco lopez sanchez is accused of firing was actually pointed not at kate steinle but at the ground. that leaves one to believe he was not aiming at the woman. that's a point the prosecution and the defense seem to agree on is the charge is still murder but not necessarily premeditated. today police criminalest displayed the gun that was used in the shooting, a .40 caliber pistol similar to this one. it had been recovered by divers off the bay. smith said one round had been fired from the seven cartridge magazine clip and that the gun was still functioning normally. under cross examination public defender repeatedly asked smith if it was possible the gun could accidently discharge without sanchez pulling the trigger. the criminalest said no matter how the trigger was pulled that is the only way the gun could have been fired. the prosecution determined he was at

spot. vic lee is live with the story. vic? >> reporter: well, dan, the preliminary hearing is expected to last two days, possibly three. it started this morning here at the all of justice. the prosecution is trying to make a case to the judge that francisco lopez sanchez ought to be tried for murder. the judge allowed cameras in court from the back. but just like his july court appearances sanchez looked thinner than when arraigned on murder charges. three san francisco police sargeants testified today. maria loreno was staying at the griffin hotel. her room looked out on pier 14. she heard a gunshot and a man dressed in black walking away from the pier, suspicious because everyone else was running towards the shooting. she took a photo of him and later identified sanchez when police arrested him that evening. but the important witness may have been the person, who in the words of another investigator said she heard a loud bang, and turned around, she saw an object land off the pier into the water with a big plunk. she led police to the area. divers the next day found the gun

bringing drugs onto the planes. vick lee is live with the story. vic? >> reporter: the airport says there are seven new security measures and they won't go into detail on each one, but a spokesperson for the airport did talk to us about the most-important one. a congress person tells us that it's not enough. there are new signs posted on doors in the terminals leading to secured areas of the airport not here when abc7 news shot the story in july. the signs say there are new restrictions on what airport workers with carry on. >> they're limited to two small items like a purse a computer bag. >> reporter: also airport officials tell us they have increased random screenings of workers and background checks they say, are more thorough. this as a result of the breeches here. three in four months. keith mayfield seen here leaving court were arrested in may and charged with smuggling drugs. two other cases were discovered
