. >> chris cato live with you in the wake of that uproar over news that pope francis met with kentucky clerk kim davis the vatican put out a statement saying in part the meeting should not be considered a form of support for her position. davis is the clerk who spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in kentucky. two days ago much of the country was shocked to learn that davis met privately with the pope while she was in washington, d.c. the vatican said in its statement that the pope met with several dozen people while there due to his kindness and availability. and that francis did not quote enter into details of the situation regarding mrs. day vits. davis says the pope prayed with her and her husband, gave them rosaries and told her to say strong. davis' mother and father of catholic, she is an apostolic christian. francis said he did not know the details of davis' case but he is defending conscientious objection as a human right that should not be denied. chris cato like in our breaking news center. >> thank you, chris. developing this m

morning, pope francis is in rome preparing for a gathering of church leaders from around the world. the visit to the united states is making headlines as the vatican offers details over the meeting with kentucky clerk kim davis. here is nbc's john yang. >> reporter: intrigue at the vatican days after the visit to the united states. officials revealing this is pope francis's real audience in washington with the former student and his same-sex partner of 19 years. the former student told cnbc, we have been friends for a long time. he knows about me being gay and he has a lot of respect for me being gay and my partner. this amateur video of the meeting surfaced the same day the spokesman tried to distance himself from kim davis. the kentucky clerk refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. the vatican says davis was one of many that the pope visited and francis was not fully briefed on the details of her case. his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support in position of all of the particular and complex aspects. >> this pope doesn't fit the left/right catego
