. ♪ >> officially called the united republic of tanzania, tanzania is located on the east coast of africa. famous for its immense and open plains, tanzania is home to elephants, lions, and rhinos, but it's also home to a tiny and deadly insect, the anopheles mosquito. actually, it's not the mosquito that kills, but the disease the mosquito carries -- malaria. in fact, more than 600,000 people in tanzania die each year from malaria. that's equal to losing every man, woman, and child living in the city of baltimore, maryland. to high school student thomas forman, this was unacceptable. captain of his new jersey football squad, he worked with his parents and teammates to kick off a unique fundraiser. they call it tackles4tanzania. hi, thomas. welcome to "teen kids news." >> hi. thanks for having me on today. >> so, what inspired you to take on fighting malaria in tanzania? >> well, actually, it's a funny story. i was on a plane ride home from china, and next to me was a canadian businessman. i struck up a conversation with this man, and he told me all about malaria. i was vaguely fami

thousands of people along our nation's gulf and east coasts, those names are reminders of the incredibly destructive power of nature. emily tells us more. >> katrina in 2005, ike in 2008, and sandy 2012. all were powerful hurricanes that slammed into the u.s. in recent years. their winds, rain, and flooding caused tremendous damage. so, no wonder that the more we learn about hurricanes, the better. dr. radley horton is an expert on these super storms. he's a climate scientist at columbia university. welcome. >> thank you. it's good to be here. what's the definition of a hurricane? a hurricane is a storm with very strong winds. it's a storm that forms over the warm waters of the tropical oceans, and as soon as that storm's winds get up to about 35 miles an hour, we call it a tropical storm. and if if its winds get up to 75 miles an hour, it's a hurricane. >> how are hurricanes classified? >> hurricanes are classified by how strong their winds are. a category 1 hurricane, which is the weakest, has winds just above 75 miles an hour. category 5, which is the strongest, is winds at

system passes off to the east later this afternoon pushes off to the north and east. so we are not done with it yet. our thinking is those heavier snow bands to the north and west they'll slide through the 95 corridor across southern maryland and the lower eastern shore later this afternoon. we're not done with the snow yet. we'll add several more inches and i think we're going to be threatening certainly maybe not the biggest storm at reagan national, but we could easily get to be number 2 or number 3 when things wind up. i think i saw a report at reagan national we're up to 16 inches and i think that is number 6 or number 7 on the list. we'll continue to add to the snow totals this afternoon. you may feel it but you see it ebb and flow over the next couple of hours but the bottom line is we're going to have bands of snow heavy at times late this afternoon and we had a wind gust 45 out at dulles. we are not done with the accumulating snow. we've got 8, 10 hours before we call it quits. quantity to hear from caitlin outside. >> wow, the second shift already coming in. caitlin. >> a
