prices down. joining me now, charlie pierce. michael, let me start with you. >> that last thing is a perfect window into the what trump has been exploiting from the get-go is the distance between the republican elites and what they believe and what they think the base believes and what the base really does believe. you have a great piece called trumpism without trump. i've been waiting for candidate to deliver a shock. something that will force them to reconnect to the actual material interest of their voters. unfortunately, the candidate espousing those views is donald trump. >> yeah. it's happening again. there was a reporter in 1996 who was saying i was waiting for the fortunate 500 to say it's the enemy and it's you. republicans have the midwestern voters and voters throughout the appalachian kind of ghetto that runs into the ozarks into new york. they have never been on the side of free market capitalism. they feel this endangers the interest. s these are people that benefit from specific programs and sometimes rely on them month to month to make the bills or feed their family.

humble and that's a very effective combination in iowa. and matt paul and michael hali here on the ground, and i promise you, we have young people by the hundreds now, who most of whom have been here since april and they know they're going to caucus monday by name. >> do they have a strong operation here or is it -- >> absolutely. it's not paper tiger. matt paul, some of the people he has named are good friends of mine, and been insiders for a long time. and this is not an inside out campaign. this is a bottom up movement, you know. i think it's important to make the disstinks, you know, that this is deja vu with an -- it resonates in the sense that, i'm going to make a controversial statement here. >> please do. >> i don't care about bernie sanders in the sense that bernie sanders. he's a face of a movement. he is our face of our issues. until we go forward and support him in those endeavors. i remember telling the obama supporters, where are you going to be in june, where you going to be in october, november. when the issues come, and that we have to address these to support this

michael smerconish. he said, i don't think ted is a republican. he's a conservative extremist. and he adds, if it comes down to cruz and trump, i'm a big trump support. do you think the more dole talks against cruz, that that helps cruz or hurts him? >> well, i mean, ted is running against institutional washington. and bob dole, personifies institutional washington. it's what ted calls the washington cartel. i think you ask a good question. and i think bob dole plays in to the campaign that ted has been running since march. i mean, this is not a new turn for him. this is what he's been doing all along. and one of ted's strengths is his consistent conservatism. and bob dole doesn't like that. >> will iowa voters -- >> -- reagan either. >> will iowa voters believe trump's an insider? >> they -- he's not an insider, but he's been dealing with all of them, including on the democratic side, donating repeatedly. what they won't believe is that he's somehow anti-hillary all of a sudden, after loving up on her for so long. and the biggest number, i think, in the polling, other undecideds, is
