storm bonnie was a bust, and so tonight ships are returning to work at the spill site, and matt gutman is back along the gulf tonight. matt? >> reporter: sharyn, the fear that a giant storm surge would have brought oil miles inland, that's pretty much gone. you can see that the floodgates behind me have re-opened and that just a couple of hours away before the storm hits. bonnie has fizzled over the gulf deflating as it cruises towards the spill site. so weak, in fact, that this armada sent out of the storm's path has tonight chugged back into it. bonnie caused no damage but cost precious time. more than a week's delay in snuffing out the well. >> the casing would have been so i think we're probably rough ly looking at seven to nine days and that could grow. >> reporter: now that the rig drilling the relief well has returned, it will take another two days to resume work, another three to five days until static kill could begin in which drilling mud then cement would slowly be choked down the well killing it. the coup de grace would come two weeks from now when the relief well is comple

bonnie has run out of steam. the disruption cost them an estimated seven to nine critical days in the race to kill the oil well. we are covering all the weather fronts tonight and their impacts starting along the gulf of mexico with nbc's charles hadlock in venice, louisiana. charles, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, lester. what's left of tropical storm bonnie is having little impact on the gulf coast tonight. just a few passing showers. the threat that bonnie could have been a larger storm has been the biggest obstacle and postponement so far in the 96-day effort to end the crisis. as bonnie washed out over south louisiana, the coast guard ordered bp ships to return to its idled ships as quickly as possible. this was welcomed news for workers stuck in port. >> this tropical storm is not a big factor. i think we should go and work as hard as we can. and try to get this resolved as soon as possible. >> reporter: bonnie was making a beeline for the oil leak when the storm fell apart. >> the tropical storm never had a fighting chance. it was dealing with a lot of wind aloft. tro

disaster wasn't bad enough, now we have a tropical storm headed that way. bonnie has already made landfall south of miami. whit johnson shows us how the storm can make a bad situation even worse. >>> reporter: crews and ships at the oil spill site are getting out out of bonnie's way. >> the winds and sea state make it advisable for safety reasons for the personnel and the equipment that's out there to move. >> reporter: admiral thad allen ordered dozens of vessels to retreat. the ships that control the underwater robots will be the last ones out. if they go, it means no more video of what's happening under water. engineers determined it's okay to leave the cap on. >> we hope it will reduce the chance of oil going into the environment while the storm passes. >> reporter: aftersome parts of the gulf are already seeing choppy seas. smaller boats helping with skimming are already back in port. tony rogers helped develop this large conveyor belt skimmer designed to pick up oil in shallow waters. >> drops into the hopper here, goes into the containment hole. >> reporter: he is bracing f

tropical storm bonnie gains strength and heads right to the oil spill. >> you're looking live at the underwater camera. the key ships on the side are under orders to evacuate as the weather turns up. at this point, engineers are confidence that the new cap will hold even if there is not a direct hit from the tropical storm, the weather could delay the work to plug the bp for good by another 12 days. jacqueline has a look on where tropical storm bonnie is headed. >> it's making a beeline of the oil well, situated inside the bahamas. even though it will stay over the water, which typically strengthens the storm it will not strengthen. it will be 40 miles an hour winds with gusts stronger. this red dot is where the oil well. you could see the projected line of tropical storm bonnie. the red line in the center of the cone pretty much will take a direct hit on the oil well. the cone you see here, the projected path. it could fall anywhere, pretty close to where the oil well is. the winds will extend out 45 miles an hour from the core of the storm, which right now is expected to take a dir

storm bonnie. it's spooling up, gaining power and momentum south of florida. sadly, the latest forecast models show it going in a bad direction -- right toward louisiana, all that oil in the water. and so already tonight the governor of that state has declared a state of emergency in advance of the storm. the good news? while oil cleanup workers will have to get out of there, the cap on that well will stay on unlike the last storm, and it won't mean more oil spewing into the water, or so they tell us. that story is where we begin here tonight with our own anne thompson in venice, louisiana. anne, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. this is a big vote of confidence for the sealing cap and bp and good news for the people here in the gulf who could be in the crosshairs of this storm. boom, the gulf's symbol of defense, is hauled away this morning at mexico beach on florida's panhandle. put out to protect, it can become a danger if picked up and pushed inland in a tropical storm or worse. >> i want to make sure that the boom that is out there is there to protect and not
