good evening and happy new year: i'm maureen naylor. a new year, a new storm. a cold winter blast blew in overnight dropping rain and snow on some mountain homes and roadways. christian is live in nap napa with this story. >> reporter: we started getting some rain. now, at its deep, the snow was about four inches. it stopped traffic and brought out plenty of visitors. >> some of napa's highest peaks brought in the new year with a blanket of white. highway patrol had to lead people through the snow and people were warned of the condition. at the same time, crews worked hard to clear the roads. mr. perez was hard at work clearing with roads by 4:00 this morning. he said the conditions can be tough for drivers. >> just drive slow. we have families and we want to get home to them. >> -- decided to brave the elements. >> we're ging go see the snow. >> the fisher family says snow just 45 minutes away from their santa rosa home was too good an opportunity to pass up. >> he's seen it when he was about three years old. but it's his second time coming up here so close to the snow. >> it was

the weekend stealing hundreds of pounds -- hundreds of pounds of pet food. maureen naylor is live now with the story. >> reporter: the santa cruz spca keeps their food in this outdoor shed. over the weekend someone tried to break in but couldn't because it was locked. they came over the side in here and busted in instead. the no kill animal shelter which is housing 40 dogs and cats had a rough start to the new year. >> there was food scattered about. the door had been pried open. >> it was a total surprise. because it's something we give away for free any way, so for someone to break in and try to take that was just kind of, not sure why, you know. it's kind of a dick -- -- -- it's kind of a kick in the face. >> a lot of people really depend on it. they show up every week at 9:00. they line up on the road. >> reporter: the response since has amazed shelter worker. an outpouring of support from strangers who came up to clean up the mess. including this man who came in from out of state. >> that's the way i was brought up. we believe in lending a hand. >> reporter: the agency receiv

wakeup call that many did not want to hear. good evening, everyone. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm maureen naylor. heather and ken are off tonight. more than a dozen san francisco neighbors are spending this first night of 2011 in a shelter because of that fire early this morning. tonight we have new information from one resident who says the fire started in her apartment. ktvu is live in the city tonight with the city tonight. janine. >> reporter: maureen, there are 40 people staying at this recreation center that is designated as a red cross shelter. you can see just beyond these doors all of the fire victims have laid down to sleep. the lights went out a minute ago. it has been a long and trying day for them. this woman was rescued from her third story apartment shortly after 1:30 this morning. firefighters carefully brought her down on the stretcher while flames raised through the building behind them. this woman who didn't want to be identified, says the fire started in her apartment. she told us through a translator she was sleeping and smelled smoke. >> i noticed that there was a sm

2news at five. >> good evening. i'm maureen naylor. >> i'm ken wayne. we are learning more about a double shooting in the south bay. we first reported it last night. the man who shot and killed another man and then apparently took his own life was the brother of a homicide victim. the man he shot may have been connected to her death. we are in san jose with new details and the live report. >> reporter: we are here at the pete's coffee. customers have been surprised that it's closed today and that's because this is where the shooting happened last night. when police responded to gun shots fired they found a 52- year-old wayne sanchez dead with what appeared to be aself inflicted gun shot wound. he is the brother of a woman who went missing in 2001 and is presumed dead. earlier he was inside the restaurant and ran into the man arrested for his sister's murder but released because of lack of evidence. >> during the course of that conversation the suspect accused the victim of playing a part in the murder and she was murdered in 2001. >> reporter: police say sanchez left the restaurant

aren't adopted by february, the goal is to find them foster homes. reporting live in san jose, maureen naylor, kt vu channel 2 news. >>> we have more now on the breaking news we've been reporting from pacheco. we just spoke with the chp and they are telling us right now that they may have to shut down 680 in the southbound direction once again. now here's the situation if you're just joining us. police believe they found a series of pipe bombs inside a public storage facility there that you see on the screen on first avenue in pacheco. from what we understand, they have detonated at least two of those devices on scene. apparently they did not feel it would be safe to transport them to another location. and from what we understand, from just talking to the chp there may be more devices that they need to detonate and as a result, 680 is going to be shut down again perhaps in the coming minutes. coming up next at 6:00, we will have more on that developing news from our reporter who is now on the scene. we'll get late details. julie haener is in the news newsroom with more stories we're wo
