mitt romney had about 37% of the vote. rick santorum over 40% and ron paul reporting 11% and newt gingrich around 14%. we'll have the number finals in a few moments. we appreciate everybody's attention. we appreciate everybody who has been a part of this important process. >> and can you tell me what this meant in terms of turnout and how this might have been a factor this the case? >> we saw a lot of enthusiasm among the colorado republicans to participate in the process. it has been very exciting tonight and i'll tell you, rick santorum surprised a lot of folks in terms of his turnout, his willingness to come to colorado and compete for the votes and the enthusiasm that we saw across the state is pretty exciting. >> exclusively on cnn, you heard it here first. santorum made a push right at the end. we know el paso county was not in colorado springs, a lot of the evangelical christians there. do you know what the percentage of victory was for santorum down in el paso county? >> his margin of victory was about 1,300 votes

they've come back to mitt romney. i think you'll see that happen again. >> how much are you concern about the potential back lash to all the negative campaigning? both from mitt romney's side and newt gingrich's. rick santorum hasn't gotten involved in that, certainly nowhere near the extent of the other two. people are beginning to say, look, he might be thriving with the co-conspirator vote. by the fact he is not beating up on his opponents. >> there may be some of that. now that he's entered the top tier of candidates, i'm sure he'll get more scrutiny himself from the press and the other candidates. for example, piers, if you look at his record, he is not the perfect conservative or pure conservative that he claim to be. he's been involved in all sorts of ear marging and pork barrel spending tactics, as you may know. he's voted many times tone crease the debt ceiling. more of those will come out as this race unfolds. and then also, keep in mine that the notion that he hasn't been involved in negatives really isn't

in this year's nevada caucuses, mitt romney to mitt romney circa 2008. in 2008, the last time mitt romney ran for president, he got more than 22,000 votes in nevada, over 51%, this year, he got about 16,000 votes in nevada, 50%. that is part of a broader worrying trend for both mitt romney specifically and the republicans generally. lower turn out among republicans in their primaries and caucuses this time around. if you look just at self-identifying republicans in the exit polls, here is what has been happening to turn out in republican contests. iowa, with 2008 turn out on the left, this year on the right. 11% drop off. in new hampshire, 2008, compared to this year, numbers drop 15%. only real bright spot is south carolina, turn out did go up by 20%. in florida, return to the downward trend, turn out was down 16% this year, compared with 2008. of course the enthusiasm gap was invoked in 2010 as the key to republican victory. so it looks to be a drop in republican turn out from 2008 is worrying trend number one. the second worrying trend is the polling

finally a little bit of good news for mitt romney in arizona, mitt romney has a small lead in arizona right now, beating rick santorum 36 to 33. watch what happens if you take newt gingrich out of the picture. watch. oop, hey that is a reversal. rick santorum goes to losing to beating by 2 points. the next three contests on the republican side are michigan, arizona and washington. the latest polling shows if newt gingrich gets out of the race before those contests, rick santorum wins all three. the tipped presence of newt gingrich in the race is the only thing keeping the words front-runner and mitt romney anywhere near each other. and that brings us back to the billionaire casino guy. when newt gingrich received his first $5 million injection from the casino guy last month, mr. gingrich supporters spent the money going after mitt romney. remember the half hour long king of bain documentary they purchased and aired in south carolina? that was thanks in larnl part to sheldon adelson's $5 million. according to new reporting in "time" magazine, the casino guy was not all that psyched abo

mitt romney did not win iowa. had the iowa result been clear the night of the caucus, had the iowa republican party not screwed it up, had rick santorum been declared the winner that night i'm not sure that would have had a huge effect on the overall race anyway. iowa republicans are seen as having kind of a mike huckabee problem. iowa republicans pick guys like mike huckabee and rick santorum, has no effect on the overall race it's iowa, kind of irrelevant, another case for iowa not going first at least on the republican side. in iowa, historical terms it was amazing that iowa republicans screwed up their caucuses so badly they wrongly reported the results and had to flip them after the fact. historically amazing. but in terms of the impact of the race, not so much. now though, if another state pulls an iowa, that would have a huge impact on the narrative of the race. therefore, it would have a big impact on who is likely to get the republican nomination for president. i think that is where we are right now. head

so there was mitt romney with his first wife. every single word that donald trump says publicly, every word, is designed to get attention to him so that he can pump up the ratings of his tv show because unlike mitt romney, donald trump still has to work for a living. and he so desperately needs the couple of million dollars that he makes on tv that he must spend his life promoting his show. and in show business, any mention of your name is good promotion. consistency doesn't matter. >> mitt romney is a basically small business guy, if you really think about it. he was a hedge fund. he was a fund guy. he walked away with some money from a very good company that he didn't create. he worked there. he didn't create. >> did create companies, though? >> well, but -- look, he'd buy companies, close companies and get rid of the jobs. the thing about romney, i wasn't in love with the job he did in massachusetts. he wasn't popular. he was a one-term governor. didn't have high approval ratings. i don't like that. i'd like a guy running for
