lester holt starting us off. and i know there with you is our friend, jim cantore. the weather channel meteorologist. jim, we always talk about tornado sightings, unconfirmed, suspected tornadoes. few people realize the kind of investigation that goes into confirming just what it was and how strong the winds were. >> reporter: yeah, and of course it's a subjective thing. let me show you what the weather service guys probably looked at when they got here at this strip mall, which started our coverage last night. you take a look at what was the front of the mall here. these bolts -- this was a 2 x 4 that was bolted down. but whatever was bolted to it was stripped from it. look at this metal with these huge bolts just bent in half. whatever came through here probably blew apart this building in about five to ten seconds. you can see what is left of it. the entire strip mall is a pile. but one thing here is we don't have the debris thrown everywhere. so that's why we didn't get one of those stronger ratings, perhaps 190 to 200-mile-per-hour winds. the winds they estimat

i'm lester holt reporting from i'm lester holt reporting from new york. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >>> good evening. we begin with developing news in san francisco. the police chief just announced they have made an arrest in the case in the five bodies found in a home two days ago. this after authorities thought it was a murder/suicide. monty at the halls of justice with the latest. >> reporter: the suspect is a 35-year-old man with a criminal record. he was taken into custody early this morning. he's been identified. he now faces five murder charges in connection with the death of family in the city's ingleside neighborhood. police would not go into detail about how or where he was taken into custody. as for a motive, police did not respond to questions about earlier reports that the killings had to do with a conflict over money. police want to offer reassurances it was a targeted murder. >> the investigation continues. it's ongoing. i want to continue to reassure the public that this incident was specific. >> reporter: the victims are not officially been identified by the coroner

i can see lester holt. lester, can you hear me and can jim hear me? >> reporter: i can hear you, brian. the point i was making is they have had about 300 homes that were either destroyed or damaged here, about 25 businesses. shelters are up and running here. they continue to search, but they believe they have accounted for all the casualties. again, six killed here and as many as 100 injured. this is an area that they know in illinois escaped much of the horrible season we had last year. remember 1800 tornados last year, over 500 fatalities. illinois didn't have a single fatality. this is the worst they have seen for many, many years here. they're assessing the situation, trying to get power back on to the areas and make sure they have accounted for all 9,000 people in this community, brian. >> lester, what i was going to say, we've lost our satellite path to jim cantore. what i was going to tell him is tonight on the weather channel, dr. greg forbes, the severe weather specialist, is telling people in the path of these storms tonight go to sleep with

lester holt's been covering this since the outbreak. and again tonight, heads up our reporting from henryville, indiana. hey, lester, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening. i'm standing in the middle of the 52-mile-long path of the biggest tornado of that day, the ef4 churning at speeds of 175 miles per hour. what does that translate into? how about a power pole that snapped into thirds? reinforced metal bent like paper around that tree branch. and here's the attic of a house that simply collapsed on top of itself. this didn't take place over a matter of minutes. it happened in a matter of seconds. and survivors are finding that moving on presents a new and different challenge each day. three days after the tornado gutted this small indiana town, this morning, a blanket of snow, adding insult to injury. aaron zoman falls on the slick rubble of his home as he searches for family photos and keepsakes. he's unhurt. >> kind of makes you worry about the rest of the pictures that's left when all that snow melts. >> reporter: today, m

i'm lester holt, in tonight for brian williams. the mere mention of the word strikes deep anxiety for parents everywhere. autism. a set of development disabilities that often send healthy outgoing children into a nearly impenetrable world of their own. and we learned that more and more american children are now considered to be autistic. the numbers are jaw dropping. according to the cdc, 1 in 88 children has been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. among boys, 1 in 54. to put those numbers in perspective, just three years ago, 1 in 110 children were diagnosed with autism disorders. but the question many are asking tonight, are more children being stricken with the condition, or are doctors simply diagnosing them more often? nbc's chief science correspondent robert bazell has details. ♪ good morning academy how are you ♪ >> 3-year-old aiden meyers was diagnosed with autism last summer. >> i tried to prepare myself for it. i told myself i was going to be okay with it. and today -- it was a hard day. >> aiden is amo

i'm lester holt in henry ville, indiana. you're looking live at what's left of the school in this small indiana town. this is only part of the damage. on friday powerful storms stretching from the gulf coast to the great lakes flattened homes. at least 31 people are dead, a number that's expected to rise now that it's daylight and crews can renew their search. amy? >> i know, lester, you arrived just a short time ago. it was dark when you got there and you talked about when the sunrise rose, what you saw pretty much in every direction. >> reporter: i got here a little before daybreak, so when you looked around, you saw just these silhouettes of what appeared to be this kind of moonlight scape, but then as the sunrise came up, we could see everything in ruins. this is the school. it's the elementary, high school, junior high. it's a complex of schools. the school itself let out early but some kids couldn't make it home safely in time and took shelter with teachers. school buses tossed about, cars. this is a road sign here. bu
