possibilities in this tragedy, we want to dig deeper and bring in neuron surgeon dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, several nfl players have committed suicide and brain-related injuries they sustained while playing have been blamed. it's impossible what was going on his mind, but is it possible that past head traumas could have played a role in seau's taking his own life? >> i think we have enough evidence to say yes, because you're starting to see a pattern of exactly what you're describing here, anderson, this idea that the previous blows to the head, trauma, for example, sustained on a football field can accumulate over time and lead to something known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. a lot more people know this term than even a few years ago. they may have memory loss, depression, anger, those are the cardinal symptoms. what's so striking here, you alluded to this, just like dave duerson, we talked about him last year, in 2011, he shot himself in the chest as well. it's a very unusual way, a rare way for one to commit suicide and it's hard to talk about. but in duerson's cay, he shot the n

wanted his brain to be studied to learn more about the damage caused by concussions. dr. sanjay gupta has been investigating this topic it seems like forever. sanjay, there are reports that seau's brain will be examined in boston. what will medical examiners look for first? >> this is a lab that's been in existence for some time although it's still relatively new science. they're looking for something known as cte, chronic traumatic encephalopathy. basically it's an amazing thing and i've seen this myself, carol. they're looking for plaques and tangles in the brain. those are things you typically see associated with alzheimer's disease, except they're looking for it in a 43-year-old man. same story, as you remember last year, you and i talked about dave duerson who also -- it's tough to talk about but killed himself in this rare way, shot himself in the chest and said he wanted his brain studied. in duerson's case they found evidence of what he had been concerned about. >> explain to us how damage in the pran could cause someone to commit suicide. >> i preface again by saying what we're t

me now, dr. sanjay gupta, who is also a neurosurgeon. good to see you in person here. >> thanks. >> give us a sense of what they're going to be looking for when they examine his brain. >> i'll preface by saying it's tough to talk about, just how recent this all lab. it's called a sports legacy institute, and they're going to be looking at his brain, looking for these protein deposits that are called plaques and tangles, and typically you think of these sorts of things in conjunction are alzheimer's disease. it's a similar sort of thing that in this case they're trying to make the diagnosis of cte, which stands for chronic traumatic encephlopathy. this is relatively new science, and some of what we're describe, some of what's been happening over the last few years is still very, very early on in terms of what they're finding. >> what do you think they would find in a brain like that? >> i am pretty confident they're going to find cte, in part because of the 19 nfl players' brains that they've already examined. players who died for various reasons. 18 of them had evidence of cte.

sanjay gupta. so we asked sanjay about which part of the brain decided hiding in the sand is there. >> as much as it pains me to think this, i think being smart and having common sense are often inversely proportional. that may be nowhere more true than with brain surgeons in particular. when it comes to, you know, very emotional things like getting engaged, that can be more frightening than even doing brain surgery. >> i love that we interviewed sanjay about this. it does have a happy ending. when a brain surgeon can't get things done, you call in a guy with the metal detector. he saved the day. >> i didn't really care about the expense of it all, i really wanted to be engaged to her at that point. >> so he ring was recovered, the brain surgeon proposed. the girlfriend said yes. >> you have to feel sorry for a guy who's been digging in the rain for a couple hours. how can you say no to that? >> and this mishap won't get the guy laughed out of brain surgeon poker night. this happens to the best of them. >> i lost mywn wedding ring once. i was on the west coast and threw it away in

-year-old apparently shot himself in the chest, and our dr. sanjay gupta investigates. >> we don't know for sure if junior seau has what a lot of people are talking about, cte, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and it's off to talk about but the only way to know for sure is to examine someone's brain after they have died. that's when they know for sure if these dimension-like syndrome affected junior seau but there's a lot of similarities between him and a player named dave dourson. you may remember last year he also shot himself in the chest as did junior, and this is an usual ning thing to do. in deurson's case he left a note saying he wanted his brain examined. he did have cst. i visited the lab in boston where they examine brains for chronic traumatic encephalopa y encephalopathy. 18 out of 19 showed sans of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. the youngest person was 17 years old. this process does seem to start quite early in life. >> that was our dr. sanjay gupta. check out his show, "sanjay gupta, m.d." thanks for watching, everyone. you can continue the conversation with me o
