to 100 degrees. storm 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. tom? >> this is serious heat and a big area under an excessive heat warning and includes all of northern virginia and all these counties in pink and the district of clum bexau the baltimore metro area and this is in effect until 9:00 this evening and this is a result of high heat and high humidity. now, right now, temperature reagan national an astonishing 97 degrees here just past 11:00 in the morning. last hour it was 96 and it only has to climb another five degrees to tie the all-time record high for the month of june. all across virginia, much of maryland and west virginia, we're already into the 90s and as we look at the heat index, look at the heat index now reagan national is at 103. heat index is what it feels like with the combination of the temperature and the humidity. so, for the rest of the afternoon, we'll have our temperatures peaking in perhaps 101, maybe even 102 in a few locations and the high humidity in place and then dropping back down to the upper 90s by early this evening. how

tonight. tom kierein is watching things in the weather center for us. tom, bopup thunderstorms, that's the last thing people want to hear right now. >> yeah, but unlike last night, they're not widespread and don't have any reports of any widespread wind damage, but we have some very potent thunderstorms popping up south of washington over the last, oh, about an hour, hour and a half or so. you can see the areas in orange. those are the severe thunderstorm warning areas, and i'll zoom in and show you. these are the zones being affected right now. the nearest counties are in orange and into spotsylvania county, storms moving east at about 35 miles an hour. these are the towns that are affected. these towns are -- bowling green, arcadia, spotsylvania itself. bells crossroad. granite springs. all of these are in the path of this storm that's moving east at about the 35 miles an hour. you can see these dark colors in here and this pink zone. this is the strongest storm right here. this is north of charlottesville and these are tracking just about due east. fredericksbu fredericksbur

now, though, let's get to tom kierein taking a look at the forecast. tom, a little chill in the air this morning. >> quite a rude awakening when you step outside. it's really feeling more like early spring or maybe early fall to look forward here. it's unusual for late june to have it down into the 50s. that's where we are now. much of the region in the 50s. and out in fact mountains it's even in the 40s on this june 26th. amazing. there's the view from space. we have shallow high pressure moving down from the north. that's what's bringing in the chill. all those areas of blue are in the 40s. it uncovers much of western pennsylvania right down into western maryland. the hylands in west virginia, the 40s. the areas in dark green are in the 50s. you can see the northern suburb, western suburbs, parts of virginia in the 50s. areas in green are in the 60s. reagan national is at 64. anything right near the warmer waters of the potomac. low 80s, as well as the bay. anywhere around the bay it's a bit milder. away from the waters, eastern shore, just in the low 60s. quite a chill in the air

. storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. tom? >> well, barbara, this morning we've had a lot of cloudiness around the metro area. there have been some breaks in the clouds to our south. southern maryland, northern neck, up towards fredericksburg, the clouds are closing back in as we look at storm 4 radar going back over the last several hours. you can see all the moving color, that is rain, there's a little thunder and lightning just beginning to develop, the one red spot in the lower left of your screen, just north of charlottesville is a thundershower. not a bad storm, not severe storm, but producing thunder and lightning and heavy rain there. and as you look closer to washington, just a few specks of green on the radar farther west and north, a few scattered sprinkles showing up. still sunshine, southern maryland, northern neck, part of the eastern shore, that area is in the zone, as is all of virginia, all of the areas under the ylo area in a severe risk zone for later this afternoon, into this evening. covers all of maryland,ed eastern shore
