i am in toms river, new jersey, on the hard-hit new jersey coastline. we're going to take you now to manhattan, still struggling to recover. sinlt ya mcfadden is at one of new york city's major hospitals where evacuations of the sick are currently under way. cynthia? >> good evening, terry. that's right. well, new york began to wobble back to her feet today. the new york stock exchange opened and some buses are running, but i am standing in front of the third major hospital to shut down since the storm. this is the legendary bellevue. yesterday, when they began the evacuation, there were 725 patients inside. tonight, there are still about 200 patients inside, along with 200 members of the national guard, who are helping carry them down, sometimes as many as 18 stories. you know, we began the day here but we spent much of it in yet another community where the devastation is still to be fully unpacked. a community just outside of new york, the rockaways. this morning, the word went out. backup generators operating since monday night had failed. national g

>> this is abc 7 breaking news. >> restart breaking news from northwest washington where kwame brown has been sentenced to one day in jail. >> this is the first of the two hearings for kwame brown. john gonzalez during those from out of the courthouse. >> cynnÉ and steve, won a court house down, one to go for kwame brown. he has been sentenced moments ago. he was sentenced to one day in jail followed by six months home detention with an ankle bracelet followed by supervised probation for two years. the sentencing will begin as soon as he is sentenced at a d.c. superior court later this afternoon. this for a campaign finance charge. the judge made it clear that kwame brown will remain in custody of united states marshals today and will not be released before the sentencing. brown did break down as saying he is truly sorry for his or contact. and words cannot express thewhat he is feeling. when he spoke of his children, that is when he began to cry. of course, kwame is being said today on a federal bank charge. back in june, he amended that he lied and forged signatures to get a perso

friday during the 5:00 news, word came. >>> and to breaking news out of new york city. mayor bloomberg said the new york city marathon will not happen on sunday. >> i couldn't believe it. seemed like the mayor said it was a go. >> he was a maryland runner among the estimated 40,000 runners who expected to take part in the event. harris was planning to run with his buddy steve, who is already in new york all the way from new zealand. steve's blind and running it year after year is extra special. now, it will be a weekend in new york without the big race. >> maybe we'll take some running in central park or do something and try to enjoy, you know, new york city for what it's worth. >> reporter: harris is sympathetic of the criticism and the suffering. the race would have started on staten island where at least 20 people lost their lives. it would have shut down roads and businesses already congested post sandy. as many as 1,000 cops would have been deployed to keep racers safe instead of diverting the resources to help victims. >> i can understand the other side of the arg

the good news. also because ocean city was just south of where the storm came ashore they fared slightly better than the rest of the coastal new jersey towns. they did have three feet of water on this island from the ocean all the way from the bay. you can see they are trying to pump some of that water still off the streets here. there are some streets that are still impassible here and some pretty significant damages to the north end of this island. we went up there we saw the front end loaders we've been seeing with the dump trucks scooping off the sand off the streets. we saw homeowners who had hired back hoes and little bobcats to clear sand from the front of their house and guys with shovels shoveling out sand from his garages. i talked to one of them who is trying to salvage his stuff. look at how upbeat he was. >> do is this discourage you from living close to the beach. >> not at all. i'll be back and better than ever. >> he says he'll be back, stronger. he's going to fix up his house. the o

new week on wall street. a positive jobs report. the final one before the election on tuesday. the labor department reporting the unemployment kicked up in november to 7.9%. but 171,000 jobs were created in the month, well above expectations. numbers for the last two with months were revised upwards. an additional 84,000 jobs added for august and september new york's mayor michael bloomberg rang the bell on wednesday after a two-day shutdown because of super storm sandy. that's the first two-day weather related shut down at the new york stock exchange since 1888. it was a first slow day but there were no glitches. the markets picked up steam. the markets fell on friday. stocks closed out october by breaking a four-month winning streak. the nasdaq had the worst october since 2008. auto sales slowed in october, at least partly affected by sandy. ford rose 4/10 of a percent. chrysler rising 10%, toyota up 16%, below expectations. if you are one of the people that lined up for this star wars movies the first time

this morning in new york and new jersey some 73,000 customers remain without electricity. that means no heat or no hot water. most are on long island. over the weekend there were protests against the long island power authority. write -- which has drawn heavy criticism for the disaster. mark strassman has our report. >> reporter: new york's veterans day parade was also a salute to the city's recovery from sandy at least in manhattan. but 14 miles away in brooklyn vietnam veteran danny smith walked to a gas line to wait for an hour for national guardsmen to give him five free gallons. >> without this gas you would be in trouble? >> i couldn't charge my cell phone. it's your lifeline. >> you wouldn't have heat? >> no heat. >> reporter: in brooklyn's working class community the streets were flooded by sandy's storm surge. two weeks later no one here has power. >> tough. very tough. scary. it is dark here at night with no lights. >> reporter: 1700 of the 2400 homes were damaged or destroyed and residents complain they have been forgotten in the city's recovery. smith showed us

breaking news tonight in new york, where after days without power from hurricane sandy, the lights are beginning to slowly go back on in lower manhattan and beyond. it is slow, but it is happening. mayor michael bloomberg says most of the power in manhattan should return by midnight tonight, although some people will be left without it for another week. sandy is gone, but misery continues as so many devastated. today the death toll climbed to 97 people. staten island neighborhoods swept away. homeland security secretary janet napolitano toured the area, vowing to do everything she could to help. plus, after insisting this sunday's new york city marathon would go on, mayor bloomberg canceled the race. many were outraged the city would take valuable efforts away from the recovery efforts for the marathon. tonight, city hall and race officials have called it off. meanwhile, look at this. cars lined up for miles to get gas. drivers in some cases waiting 20 hours as the supply dwindles, fighting with each other. there's one report that a guy pulled a gun at one gas station. tonight the mili
