we begin with mark zuckerberg and facebook. if you have a facebook account, you've probably reconnected with an old pal, shared photos with your family, and gotten advice from your friends on what to buy and what to read. but facebook has bigger plans. it wants to turn the entire web into one big social network. lesley stahl first talked with mark zuckerberg in 2008, and three years later, we sat down with mark again. he gave us a preview of his site's new profile page, a change that would affect the 500 million people who were then using facebook, an idea that zuckerberg had cooked up in his dorm room at harvard. >> when you first thought about this--19 years old--is this what you had in mind? did you see this far into the future, or is it way beyond what you dreamed? >> well, it's funny. i mean, when i was getting started, you know, with my roommates in college, you never think that you could build this company or anything like that, right? because, i mean--it just--and we were college students, right? >> yeah. >> i mean, we

i think he's very young. >> but those around zuckerberg say he's learning fast. he might still wear a hoodie and no socks, but he's becoming a suit as he ponders whether to take his company public this year. this would be a good place to announce that. >> i think what i can announce is that it is highly unlikely that we will go public in 2008. when going public makes sense to do, we'll do that, and maybe that's two years out; maybe it's three years out. >> do you think that your age is an asset or a liability? >> i mean, there's probably a little bit of both, right? i mean, there are definitely elements of experience and stuff that someone who's my age wouldn't have, but there are also things that i can do that other people wouldn't necessarily be able to. >> the facebook phenomenon can perhaps best be summed up by one statistic. in july, 2010, just six years after its launch, mark zuckerberg announced that the company had reached the 500-million-user mark. as for the lawsuit charging that zuckerberg stole the idea for facebook, the parties reached a confidential

david: we know what zuckerberg created. we know what he has created but when you saw him in the very early stages of facebook what did you see in him that said, this guy is tremendously good bet? >> all of the above mentioned. i could see what tremendous potential he has has an individual and as a result he could build a great business and lead it for a long time. so, you know, it didn't have too many meetings to be able to see how capable he is. liz: all the more reason then, that you must be disappointed in how the stock was launched as an ipo and how it is performed perhaps? >> well, i think, it, it was an interesting ipo in many ways. i think that you have to be patient with, with big companies. if you look at google and apple, they are having their ups and downs but the bottom line is that this companies are not going anywhere and they're here to stay. if you think about facebook, it is so dominant in what it does, in the world, that it was very hard to see, something bad happening to it anytime soon. specifically beca
