john dingell cthe days in congress. it's being noted by the whole congress. the remarkable thing about this whole man he represents the best tradition of bipartisanship. a real fighter. takes strong positions on very controversial issues, whether we're talking about social issues or guns, issues important to his district over the years. but from the time i first covered him as chairman of the energy and commerce committee and when i knew him on the subcommittees and all these other years since, he works with republicans and democrats of all types. that's what makes him so different from the new class of people, the younger, new members, some of them, who come to the hill. your thoughts. >> andrea, the thing i'm amazed by, the 20,000 number, there are so many numbers with john dingell in terms of of his time in eye that's eye-popping. i feel it's one of these records that may never be broken. the one i'm always struck by is he has served with 11 presidents. barack obama is the 11th president of the united states that john dingell has served with. just try to w

>> if you look there's a picture signed to john dingell. franklin delano roosevelt. i didn't serve with him but he was to me right after god. he'd speak to the fire side chats. the country stopped, people wanted to listen to him. and he had that wonderful speaking style. after him i think truman who is an extraordinary guy who has the remarkable ability to simplify enormously complex questions into a simple yes or no. >> schieffer: what about l.b.j.? >> he was a tremendous president. there was only one thing that destroyed l.b.j. and that was vietnam. probably at the bottom of that have was his ego because he was i think very much afraid the people were going to see who lost vietnam. johnson didn't know how to defend it so he stayed and kept racing the ante in vietnam and it cost us a huge number of lives. >> schieffer: but he also passed the civil rights bills. >> i think that was one of the great pieces of legislation in history because we eliminated discrimination against deserving decent american people. i almost lost the election over that and i've had to go aro

that's how it felt this week when we got to talking about michigan congressman john dingell. he was first elected to the house in 1955, winning the seat his late father had held since 1933. >> when i came i had four typewriters and four staff members. it was quite different. >> in 1955 the annual average income was just over $4,100, a loaf of bread cost 18 cents and gas 23 cents per gallon. dingell was there for the signing of the 1964 civil rights act. that's him towering over president lyndon johnson as he signed it into law. dingell considers it one of the highlights of his time on capitol hill. his staunch support nearly cost him his election that year during a primary contest with the democrat who opposed the bill. dingell also championed medicare and was there for the steigningf the landmark bill. when congress passed health care reform three years ago, then house speaker nancy pelosi used the same gavel that dingell when he presided over the house when it passed medicare in 1965. >> subcommittee will come to order. >> chairman of the house energy and commerce committee

john dingell has served this house, the people's house, with honor and sincerity. his milestone comes with all kinds of markers, 20 5000 votes, 21,000 days, 30 elections, 11 presidents. but you cannot put a number on what that means. with the respect and admiration of your peers, it is more than anything why we are here today for john. despite any political differences we may have, in the and, -- in the

john dingell was one of my best supporters. we intend to have it passed by a voice vote a little later this afternoon. but you look at what we've tried to do, and i've always been a policy over politics guy. last congress we passed 80 bills on the house floor that came out of my committee. out of committee. all but four or five had democratic support, and 40 of them the president signed into law. that a's not a bad record. d that's not a bad record. it's not a record that maybe folks like to hear on these talk shows that are out there, but we have to work together. there are a lot of great members. i was at the white house earlier this morning on this mental health conference. there are a lot of great members who care passionately about where our country's headed. we have divided government, we have to recognize that, but let's work together. we've tried to do that in our committee, and i know dave camp on the ways and means committee and my other colleagues have that same type of attitude, but the margin is small. we have 233

john dingell was one of my best supporters. getting that in the market and we intend to have it passed by a voice vote. but, you look at what we have tried to do and i have always been a policy over politics. the last congress we passed eagles on the house floor that came out of my committee our committee. all but four or five of them have democratic support. and 40 of them the president signed into law. that is not a bad record that may be a lot of folks like to year on some of these talk shows that are out there. but we have to work together. there are a lot of great members. i was there this morning on this mental health conference. there are a lot of great members who care passionately about where the country is headed and how we have to work together. we have divided government. we have to recognize that. but let's work together. we try to do that. and i know that dave on the ways and means committee and my other colleagues have that same kind of attitude. but the margin is small. we have to wonder 33 republicans in the ho
