attorney general eric holder set to take to the podium in a few moments. as you can see, folks starting to file into the convention hall here. it's the naacp's 104th annual convention. roughly 4,000 people are here. and as you might imagine, the topic of conversation continues to be the verdict. the verdict. although i got to tell you, as i've talked to folks here on the ground over the past day or so, a lot of people are now talking about what's going to happen next. there is that online petition that has now garnered roughly 1 million signatures. attorney general holder certainly going to be talking about what the justice department could and could not do moving forward. meanwhile, against a backdrop of all of this, short time ago,cy brin nanl fulton, trayvon martin's mother says in part, we are not going to let this verdict define trayvon. keel define our son's legacy. we have a long way to go to make sure this happens to nobody else's child. that's the latest from here in orlando, back to you. >> we'll talk more about the the attorney general and liste

i think we have a very activist attorney general in eric holder. there was a time there when people thought he was on his way out the door. it doesn't seem like that at all. he is trying to bring a full force of the justice department around these laws and around what he sees as making sure that people get equal protection under the law as far as voting rights. the voting rights have such a land mark bill in terms of giving african-americans and latinoss the ballot there. he is looking at north carolina, mississippi, south carolina all of these states after that decision came down from supreme court moving very much quickly ahead to institute some of these laws that would limit people's access of the ballot. >> and staying on texas. lynn, you can comment on that if you'd like. governor rick perry telling the white house to back off in line with what you were discussing earlier. perry saying, once again, the obama administration is demonstrating utter -- other lawmakers suggesting texas is selectively targeted. what do you see happening long term he

eric holder will ask a federal court to reinstate its authority over voting rights in texas. the justice department tried to blunt the decision. take a listen. >> identify already directed the department of civil rights division to shift resources to the enforcement of a number of federal voting laws that are not affected by the supreme court's decision including the remaining provisions of the voting rights act prohibiting voting discrimination based on race, color or language. today i am announcing that the justice department will ask a federal court in texas to subject the state of texas to a pre-clearance regime similar to the one require by spk -- section 5 of the voting reits act. you heard what eric holder said just moments ago. is this process we'll see going forward. what's your reaction? >> i think eric holder has tapped into the mood right now particularly after the george zimmerman verdict, he understands that it's going to be very important to in the whole race conversation this summer to look very carefully at how the supreme court decision on the voting rights

when attorney general eric holder gave the keynote speech at the naacp convention which convened this week in orlando, florida. in a surprise move in his speech today, the attorney general springboarded beyond the specifics of this case and the tragedy of trayvon martin's death to make a blunt, broadside attack on florida. on the laws of the state of florida. specifically on the stand your ground law. the law that says essentially if you feel afraid, you can kill the person who made you feel that way. i should note, though, beyond his very pointed attack on that policy issue, though, the attorney general also spoke in terms that were very personal and for him, especially, i think pretty emotional. >> years ago, some of these same issues drove my father to sit down with me, to have a conversation, which is no doubt familiar to many of you, about how as a young black man i should interact with the police. what to say. and how to conduct myself if i was ever stopped or confronted in a way that i thought was unwarranted. now, i'm sure my father felt certain at that time that my parents' g

>> well, i think eric holder is in a unique position to talk about this. he comes from a personal perspective, he comes to it as the first african-american attorney general and he will also obviously brings a legal perspective to it. when we started reporting on the stand your ground laws in the background of this case last year when the case came to national prominence, we discovered even some state attorneys in florida who are employed to uphold this law have issues with it. and it seems to me that will from that point forward, you know, from the point when it became clear there would be a trial, people have been paying attention to stand your ground laws. they've been becoming more informed about them. and it makes a lot of sense that holder would direct his attention there. >> i guess the question is, did the stand your ground law play a role in the jury room? even though it was not mentioned much in the trial, one of the zimmerman jurors known as b-37 says it played a role in the jury deliberations. in a statement to cnn the juror says quote, my praye

eric holder didn't defend the defense of marriage act for many reasons. the attorney general in california did the same thing and in illinois did the same thing. the list goes on. what we're seeing is not just increasing support by the people for the freedom to marry but also increasing recognition by the attorneys general of the states that these laws can't being defended. >> you mentioned increasing support from the public. the aclu is moving forward in lawsuits in states like north carolina and virginia with more on the way from new jersey to hawaii. how much is this about momentum? >> it is definitely a cents of momentum. just last november we were at six states plus the district of columbia that allowed same-sex couples the freedom to marry. now we're at 13 states. those changes happened at the ballot box last november where we got three more states. in state legislatures this spring where we got three more states and then in the court a couple weeks ago when the supreme court allowed the provente decision to stand for same-sex couples in california.

as far as eric holder -- the reality is you got to act now. the president, you won the second term, you're in office, you are ensconced. do something courageous, bold and helpful not only to after cab american people but to america, because lest we do this, white americans and others will feel this is a justifiable verdict, this is how things happen. not until and unless the number of white kids die that approximate mate the numbers of black and other kids who die will america see it is beyond logic, it is about rationale, i think the attorney general will look at this and i think it is time for him to act. >> karen, it is one of the i think more distressing things -- there are many distressing things to come out of this trial. race was not talked about during the trial. the prosecutor john guy said in his closing argument this case is not about race, it is about right and wrong. i agree in some ways. but i absolutely think race is a part of it. now that the decision is handed down we are once again returning to the question of race which was

eric holder, is he truly under pressure from both sides? from the members of the the naacp who filed for action? is he also bothered by the potential of the right that once again go chewing on him again? >> well, it's eric holder's fate to kind of be the lightning rod and you know, front man, if you will, the guy who has to walk point for barack obama on a lot of issues. and he's going to have to do it for president obama here again on this one. eric holder spoke today to a meeting of the nation's largest and oldest african-american sorority. these are accomplished women, many if not most of them mothers who many with boys and with young men who know the fear and the agony of this situation i think president obama himself is conflicted. he knows he has to be and he wants to be president of all the people. he's gone to great lengths to try to say that the jury has spoken. a jury has spoken. that i want calm and order here. and i want to be the president of ought people but i think he also has an opportunity here to speak more directly to the

with me, michael eric dyson, maya wiley and melissa harris perry. you did a press event to talk about what possible investigation might be pursued at the federal level. what avenueses of redress are there for people that feel that justice was not done in that courtroom or even if the verdict was right and proper based on the evidence that jury saw, that the larger sense that something wrong here that should be held to account has gone unaddressed? >> congressman rangel, congressman meeks, members of the new york delegation, one wanted to support the continuation of the justice department investigation as it relates to the civil rights violations that we believe took place in the killing of trayvon martin. we also wanted to make sure that it was a comprehensive investigation that ultimately led to the presentation of evidence to a grand jury so that the grand jury can decide whether the civil rights of trayvon martin were violated. that a justice department that ultimately yields no prosecution will only result in a further continuation of the frustr

. >>> this morning attorney general eric holder told a national urban league audience in philadelphia that the justice department is taking its first steps now to counteract the supreme court decision that eviscerated a key part of the landmark 1965 voting rights act. >> based on the evidence of intentional racial discrimination that was presented just last year in the redistricting case of texas v. holder, as well as the history of pervasive voting related discrimination against racial minorities, that the supreme court itself has recognized we believe that the state of texas should be required to go through a preclearance process whenever it changes its voting laws and practices. >> nbc justice correspondent pete williams joins me now. pete, take us through the law here. how does the attorney general have the legal ability once the supreme court has ruled about section 5 to actually go and require texas to go through preclearance again? >> so section 519 part of the voting rights act that says that states with a history of discrimination must get preclearance. but what the supreme c

attorney general eric holder expected to speak at 4:00. he'll of course be talking about that verdict that came down. we also expect him to spend some time talking about voting rights as well. you probably recognize this man. this is reverend william barber. he's the state conference president of the north carolina state naacp. first of all, let's start with the verdict. how has that decision, how has that jury's decision changed the tone of the convention here in orlando? >> well, it's a disturbing dÉjÀ vu that has made us more determined. we see an avalanche attack on votedi in voting rights. now this decision. 58 years ago a black kid went to the store to get candy and ended up dead. 58 years later, a black boy goes to the store to get candy and winds up dead. the logic of the way this case has come down, if emmett till had fought back, his abductors would have been able to accuse him of hurting them and could have claimed self-defense. remember, back then it took the justice department to get in. so we are saying the justice departme

let's bring in our guest, judge id brown and matt miller, former aide to eric holder. matt, i want to get right to pup where what exactly is the attorney general doing and where do we go from here? is this just texas? >> no. i i he is sending a clear signal. the main tools the justice department has, they still do have some tools and in the absence of congress acting and congress does need to act, they'll use what they have. you saw them start with texas. and i think they started with texas because there is a record here as you indicated. they have shown in court that texas has a pattern of recently discriminating. but i don't think they will end here. i think north carolina is likely to withdraw challenge. i think texas which passed discriminatory voter id law several years ago, i think that the next challenge. probably the next several weeks. >> and he is picking up on something a conversation below the mainstream discussion here where a lot of talk was about voter id and legislators. basically, the doj should use section three, use this part of the law we are talkin

speaking about this intervention last week, eric holder said this would not be the last time he used his office to protect voting rights. so the question, now, is north carolina, are you next? partisanship and access to the ballot and the right to have your vote counted. they've been on the front burner of our politics for centuries. at the 1964 democratic convention, mrs. fannie lou hamer, a sharecropper turned activist, explained to the democratic party, their faces, what it was like for her to try to vote in her home state of mississippi. >> it was the involvement in 1962 that 18 of us traveled miles to the county courthouse in indianola to try to register to become first-class citizens. we was met in indianola by policemen, highway patrolmen and only allowed two of us in to take the literacy test at the time. after we had taken this test and started back through there, we was held up about the city police and the state highway patrolmen and carried back to indianola. the plantation owners came and said, fannie lou, tell you what i said. i said, yes sir. he said, i mean if you don

this year eric holder. but you talk to anyone for more than 10 or 15 seconds and they want to talk to you about the verdict, about the trial. but a lot of folks are also talking about moving forward. you know that the online petition that was started by the naacp to petition the justice department to engage in some sort of action now. at last check it was at close to 900,000 signatures. that seems to be the next step here at the justice department. i talked to ben jealous this morning, president of the naacp. he's optimistic that petition much like the online petition which led they think to the prosecution of george zimmerman, they think that this petition could very well have the same result. this afternoon the attorney general eric holder set to address the convention at 4:00. he will of course be talking about the verdict, just as he did in d.c. on sunday at the delta sigma theta, 100th anniversary. but he's also expected to talk about the voting rights decision. he is expected to talk about predator le
