his name is the reverend william barber, he's the president of naacp in north carolina. he's the man who is instrumental in the moral mondays protest in that state and he's now leading this multistate protest effort against the most influential republican in north carolina politics. joining us now for the interview tonight is the reverend william barber, north carolina's naacp president. reverend barber, thank you very much for being here. it's real nice to have you here, sir. >> rachel, thank you so much and for all that you do. >> why are you picketing art pope's businesses? what's the goal? >> well, what we see with art pope is the most lewd and cynical and sinister form of wealth and power manipulation. to put your stores deliberately and publicly in communities of low wealth and 25% african-american, make your wealth off of people, pay them low wages, and then, in turn, use that power to push and promote policies that are adverse to their lives and diametrically opposed to their future is just untenable. what we have seen with art pope, you listed all those numbers

texas, mississippi, alabama, florida, south carolina, north carolina, virginia have all gone there. mr. ho, talk about the patterns like they jumped like the cherokee strip. here's votes we can steal. they just moved on a dime with the supreme court rule. >> the thing is, chris, it's not just those states you highlighted. i like to say that voter suppression in the south -- the south is not like las vegas when it comes to voter suppression. what happens there doesn't stay there. so when you see proof of citizenship laws that force people to show a copy of their birth certificate when they register to vote in georgia and alabama, those laws spread to kansas and other states outside of the south. i don't carry a birth certificate around with me walking down the street. these laws are aimed at preventing voter registration drives. i think there's a segment of our elected officials who have decided as the electorate gets more diverse and younger instead of trying to compete for those votes which is what you're supposed to do, they're trying to squash those voices. and we don't think tha

talk about south carolina for a second. this is your 9th facility if i'm not mistaken in south carolina. what is it about that state that keeps you coming back? >> hi, david. good to be with you. 40 years ago we started producing michelin tires in the state of south carolina. over that time we've been growing and groping and growing. we've had a lot of success. we just opened today our new plant that makes these large earth movers tires. tires behind me. that is the first tire. it was just produced. this is actually the second plant that makes earth mover tires that we've got up now in south carolina. what is really interesting about this, is that 80% of these earth mover tires made in south carolina, are exporters of the rest of the world. david: right. >> 30% go to canada and 50% go to container ships in the rest of the world. not only manufacturing in the united states but we're producing products and sending them to the rest of the world. so that is very interesting story. david: by the way, i don't know if you get a se

richard richard burr of north carolina, and ron johnson of wisconsin. now, those are all senators who say, you see them up there, all senators on the republican side who say that they at least want to give this measure, this deal a chance to get to a final vote. and why does this matter? this matters because once it gets to a final vote, you just need a simple majority, 51. democrats are expected to have that. so that's why this key 60-vote threshold tomorrow is the one to batch for. going back to the democrats really fast, there very well could be a few democrats, maybe some of thome up for re-election in tough races, red states like mark pryor of arkansas, or kay hagan of north carolina. we haven't heard from her yet. but it looks as though democrats and republicans frankly behind the scenes are pretty confidence that this is going to go through. >> this is a compromise that sailed through the house of representatives. but with every compromise, you're going to end foo people on both sides unhappy with

that's what's going on down in south carolina right now. i didn't find a single republican that said they were going to vote for her, nor were they going to vote for vince, the popular state senator, a democrat, who almost beat her the last time. so listen, she has managed somehow to make everybody in the state pretty upset, except for a lot of the tea party. and then she kind of skrud that up by going out and endorsing lindsey graham. here we are. what we are finding is that nicki hailey is remarkably popular in 49 states, none of which is south carolina. >> where it matters. >> you point out in this article people forget that she only won election as governor by four points, but going back to that lindsey graham piece, senator in south carolina a long time, facing a serious, i would say, challenge from the right, from the tea party flank. if hailey's so unpopular there, i mean, does it actually help lindsey graham that she's saying nice things about him? >> well, what she's doing is she's now trying to go to the middle. again, remember, t

we're not just talking about north carolina. to some degree i feel like north carolina is a test case of a lot of different things. just this week, look at ohio. right? there's a lot that'll be heading to governor kasich's desk. vote purges. this is ohio where we know there have been problems. >> that's right. and so, you know, these purges have excluded a number of legitimate voters. that's one big problem. also in ohio, there are issues where they're trying to eliminate the number of voting machines in ohio in terms of the new law. and we know about the long lines in ohio. in 2004, some voters waited for up to ten hours in line. a lot of people didn't vote in ohio as a result of long lines. we really do have reason to be concerned. >> you know, penda, last question to you. it feels like when you look at what's going on across the country, i mean, again, 2013 was a really tough year for voting rights, it feels like conservatives who are backing these laws are essentially getting started early, quite frankly, when they look to 2

gres morris was in north carolina who saw his benefits cut off over the summer. how did you lose your job a few years ago, and what are you doing now? >> well, i've been unemployed since december of 2011. currently i continue to look for employment. i did recently just receive a or start a part-time job, but for the most part i've been unemployed and seeking work. >> where is that part-time job you're doing? >> i'm working at home depot. >> home depot. after this job that you had a couple of years ago that required a different skill set, now you work at home depot? >> yes. i was a project manager, and i have been a project manager in the commercial industry for 30 years. since 2008 i probably worked a total of 16 months in my profession, and finally last december 2011 i was laid off from a company here in charlotte. >> do you think it's fair that north carolina cut off the unemployment benefits? >> no, i do not. there's so many of us out there still struggling. a lot of people i see every day. a lot of my friends are still unemployed. >> what do you say to the cr

folks in south carolina -- i'll tell you that in south carolina, we have about 4.7 million people. 600,000 or 700,000 folks do not have health insurance coverage. 4.6 million, 4.7 million south carolinians of which about 700,000 today do not have health insurance. but under obamacare, we would hope, we would hope that the number would go down, not up up. go from 7 hoopt down to 600,000 or 500,000, 400,000. it is over 430,000 of the 700,000 people are eligible for obamacare. but the number is not going down. the number is going up. because 150,000 south carolinians have received cancellation notices. let's frame that a little bit. we have 700,000 uninsured of which 430,000 are eligible for obamacare. and yet instead of seeing the number of uninsured go from 700,000 down to 600,000 or 500,000 or 400,000, we've seen the number go up because 150,000 people have received cancellation notices. 150,000 south carolinians have received cancellation notices. so -- someone would obviously ask the question how many folks have signed up for obamacare in south carolina? if 430,000 south carolinians are

i assume the people in south carolina want people to have health care what do you do? >> one of the things to lower the cost of health insurance we could allow for competition across state lines and allow for small business owners to group their funds together. >> why didn't we do that? >> that is one of the failures of the preobamacare world is we could have addressed medical tort reform and we didn't do it. we have to reintroduce common sense into the marketplace. and we could fund insurance pools to give those with preexisting conditions more opportunities. if you are in a group plan, preexisting conditions are absorbed. when you are in an individual market there is no group. you have to pay higher rates to find your insurance. that is going to be the challenge. that coupled with out of pocket expenses going from 6,000 to as high as 12,000 means those who cannot afford insurance they get the free health care checkup but they can't take care of the challenges in that checkup what do they do next? >> there is a heart breaker. i want to talk about the bipartisan budget

but just in north carolina, there were thousands, maybe 4,000 killed. but, to this guy, he finds no problem in completing dishonoring that sacrifice and saying what's happening in north carolina now is worse thanks to a republican supreme court chief justice and president obama. >> you know, it's sort of amazing. we throw around the phrase a lot in politics. this party has gone insane, these people have gone insane. i think usually what we mean is they want absurd things. they're asking too much. they don't have a sense of political reality. we have a party that is actually losing its grip on reality. these claims are just fan tast call and absurd. and the thing is look, you can always find somebody saying something crazy in politics if you go to the extreme wing but what's amazing about this is it's really not that far removed from what we hear from all over the republican party. we are seeing in georgia, in michigan, some candidate can say i don't like obama care but since it's the law of the land, maybe we should try to fix some parts of it. if you j
