macy macy macy's was supposed to be the winner. >> i got to tell you, i'm sure you had me on today because macy's is right here in cincinnati. but what macy's does know is they saw 15% less foot traffic and they got a lot of square tootsies when you take a look at those malls. they got 3% more sales out of those shoppers but they got a lot of overhead and internet is still only 10%. so while they get it in the short term they're also going to be getting it and feeling it in the bottom line. >> but if they're the ones that are getting it and they're laying off staff, stephanie, what other retailers are going to follow in their footsteps? >> i think all the department stores. look at jcpenney today. that was an absolute disaster. i think the off price retailers, the tjx, the ross stores are very well positioned. they entered the holiday season with lean inventory. they will buy all that inventory and sell it at a discount. tjx is one of the best run companies. macy's are doing the right thing. they're doing what they need to do to produce the bottom line results and they've done a great job.

macy's reporting sales for the holiday season, november and december rose 3.6%. that includes sales at brick and mortar stores and in the third quarter, illustrate easily outperformed rivals such as kohl's, jcpenney's and walmart. holiday sales overall rose 2.7% nationwide. it will add positions, however, to its growing online business because of people like me who don't like going to the store. so overall staff levels will remain about the same. macy's is going to combine some store districtes and close five underperforming locations. shares rose 5% after hours trading in the u.s. meantime, frankfurt sales are up 5%, as well. other retailers are weighing in on their holiday experience. costco rose 3%, including the impact of fuel sale and foreign exchange. analysts expected sales to rise 1.8%. costco's results were boosted partly by online sales in the u.s. and canada. in frankfurt, costco shares at this hour are trading -- i'm having a little bit of trouble finding the board, i guess. it's not coming up. but we'll see if the street likes that. there we go. not

i get -- >> actually. >> my view on macy's is that they're setting themselves apart. i think you are going to see choppiness through the holiday here in retail. i think into 2014 particularly in the first half. i think we have head windses from some of the health care initiatives. gas prices along with you have some of the spending headwinds which housing is improving but you do have this durable shift that's away from some of the core retail. to your point i think that this could prove a great buying opportunity for a name like macy's because i think they've set themselves apart from an omni channel and on-line perspective and they've made the investments and again, kind of likening it to the titanic turning in the hudson river, that's actually a line directly from terry lundgren when we had them up in boston a couple weeks back. i think that to me is what they've done and now i think they're really set for this like i said a multiyear track that i think is really going to put them in a nice place. >> thank you very much for joining us. finally it is time to relax. s
