boeing is being so tight-lipped about this. they're part of the investigation so they're being guarded with whatever technology they have. but again this, what we showed in this report is that technology is out there. it's in satellite covering the globe. to be able to pinpoint where that plane and is send out information to a controller on the ground about air speed, altitude, where that is gps location within feet so there. this airline industry made $18 billion last year. it's not a lot of money to have the information. that air france search cost about $160 million. searches are expensive and planes are too. >> our thoughts and prayers go out to the people in seattle after that terrible helicopter crash this week. thank you for being with us. >> we asked you what lingering questions you may have about the missing flight. you sent thousands of them. we had to go through them aviation attorney sal lagonia. >> jenny says it is possible the pilots were having unexpected trouble? >> well, good question. >> great question. except

this is a boeing 777. >> i couldn't agree more. a boeing 777 has a rather large radar cross section in that it's an actual wide body jet. so when you put this thing something like 400 to 500 miles an hour and around 30,000 feet. if that isn't a flight plan to cross indonesian airspace, or not part of any traffic, that is what brings curiosity to radar controllers' screens, when they see something that is unusual. this wouldn't have been part of any normal routine traffic going through any of the air corridors. it certainly wouldn't have a flight plan attached to it. i completely agree, this is something that we need to ask more questions of the indonesian government and indonesian military in going back through their radar traces and just see if there was anything unusual that would indicate that this debris might be the debris of 370 off the tip of australia. >> it's hard to imagine why in the world -- it's hard to come up with a scenario in your mind, for why someone would make this drastic turn and fly for hours on end. for inst

. >> i've heard from boeing they did not describe to boeing's service. boeing is a service that would almost be a third party. so that information could be transmitted from the airplane to somebody within the airline on the ground, but boeing would not be getting that information. so, in other words, boeing offers a service that would gather the information and help provide maintenance information. >> the fact is everything contradicts everything else. leah, thank you very much. let's get to peter gold, former managing direct at the at the ntsb, knows what he is talking about. this is the most confusing one i've seen. how about you? >> awfully challenging and awfully chaotic in the early days. >> two matters of great interest to me at this moment. we got word from the military they're moving assets west and word from the white house a new search area may open in the indian ocean. what does that lead in to believe? that's thousands of miles away. >> well, i think that leads us to believe that they are looking at different radar tracks from different radar

navy are scrambling now to find this missing boeing 777. it disappeared while flying from malaysia to beijing with 239 people aboard. dominiq >> you know the 777 has a flawless safety record. in the 19 years since it entered service and has been 1,000 aircraft entered into service in that time, there have been 60 incidents, most minor. the first fatal incident the 777 had was last year, july 2013 at san francisco aircraft where an asiana airlines came in short of the runway and three people died. it was blamed on pilot error in that case, not a technical problem. there was a similar incident back in 2008 where a british airways plane came up short at heathrow. again, not technical problems. the question is what exactly happened here? these planes can fly for three hours on a single engine. even if both engines fail at cruising altitude, it doesn't just go into a straight nose dive and crash into the land or sea, it tends to glide gradually downward. something catastrophic seems to have happened here. that is the initial indication. if you l

what type of lawsuits could boeing face here? >> well, depending on the outcome of the investigation, what is disclosed and ultimately determined, boeing could face lawsuits from all the passengers and the crew on board that aircraft. unlike the claims against malaysia air, which must be brought in certain jurisdictions, claims against boeing can be brought in the united states in my home state of illinois, just because boeing has its headquarters there. so it could face massive claims. >> the liability of the airline itself versus the plane manufacturer? >> yes. the liability of the airline itself is almost automatic. it definitely is automatic for the first $176,000. after that, it's virtually automatic, because the airline, not the passengers, have the burden to prove that they took all necessary measures to avoid the loss or a third party is solely responsible for the loss. absent proving that, malaysia air is going to have to pay compensation. malaysia air is facing massive claims nearing their insurance policy limits of $1
