he was this incredibly ordinary, powerless person. .. c-span: pauline maier, author of "american scripture," where did you get that title? >> guest: it began, actually, as "sacred scripture." i was interested in how what was a workaday con--document of the second continental congress became a sacred document for americans. and i was told "sacred scripture" wasn't going to work because it would get classified as a religious book. so in the course of negotiations, we retitled the book. c-span: and what's this book about? >> guest: it's about the declaration of independence, about how it was originally drafted, about the event, independence, that it announced to the world and particularly to the people of the united states and then how really the american people and ultimately, with the very eloquent help of abraham lincoln, redefined it into a document that served a very different purpose. c-span: early on in the book you tell a story about two summers ago--1995. >> guest: yes. c-span: you were at a woodrow wilson scholars seminar and you walked across the street to the national ar

. this originally aired in 1996 and it's about an hour. c-span: jean h. baker, author of "the stevensons: a biography of an american family," what's the scope of this book? >> guest: well, it's pretty broad and it's a long book but it covers a lot of stevenson generations. and it also focuses on the most important, in some ways, of all the stevensons. and that's adlai ewing stevenson ii, who lived from 1900 to 1965 and, of course, was the losing democratic presidential candidate in 1952 and 1956. it took me a long time to do and i really was trying hard to look at layers of stevensons and different views of family life, etc., and not only do just a political biography of some of the best known stevensons. c-span: did you ever meet any of them? >> guest: yes, i did. the most prominent stevensons that i met were adlai stevenson ii's sister, that's buffie stevenson ives who was really an indomitable figure and she's the one i think who was partially responsible for the fact that the stevenson archive now numbers about 700 boxes of material. i guess every family has someone that c

i was being interviewed on c-span. the first question that i got was why would josephus daniels be secretary of the navy during the first world war? and the short answer to that is politics. daniels, the longer answer is daniels was a very important player in the democratic party at both the national and the state and regional level. he had been a member of the democratic national committee for 20 years by the time the 1912 presidential election rolled around. and he was a newspaper publisher and arguably one of the most important voices, democratic voices, in the south. that's what put him on wilson's radar screen initially. and then he played an important role in getting wilson nominated and then he played an important role in getting wilson elected. so wilson came to appreciate daniels for his political wisdom, his connections and power. and so he wanted daniels to be in the cabinet as a political adviser. and you say well okay, you've persuaded us why he would want daniels in the cabinet, but why the navy? well, i mean, why not? there wasn't going to be a big war in the spring
