the case is playing out in chicago and it is yet another reminder that terror that you've been seeing on your tv screens can be close to home as well. and often right under our noses. cnn's george howell is on the case. he joins us live. the interesting part of this story, if the story itself is isn't interesting enough, george, this young man is not only accused of these awful charges but also accused of trying to get his own siblings to sort of come along on his plots? >> reporter: that is the case, ashleigh. the siblings were with him at the airport when this happened. however, they were detained and released the same day. the charges are against mohammed khan, at this point. the hearing today was quick and short. he was formally arraigned. he entered a plea of not guilty. he was arrested back in october at chicago's o'hare international airport with a round-trip ticket, his plans were to leave chicago for vienna, austria, and then to transfer into istanbul, turkey, to allegedly meet up with a contact who would take him into territory that isis claims it controls in iraq and syria.

we've had two american citizens one from chicago, and another from pennsylvania colleen larose, who went by the moniker jihad jane both had very serious plans to murder cartoonists in europe. in david coalman headley's case very similar plan to attack a danish newspaper in copenhagen that had done cartoons of the prophet mohammed. he was planning a mumbai-style assault on the building. luckily he was arrested at chicago airport by the fbi but his plan for the danish newspaper doesn't look dissimilar to the plan that we saw unfold on wednesday at charlie hebdo. in the case of jihad jane she was planning to kill a swedish cartoonist and we've also seen american citizens conspireing to solicit the murder of the creators of "south park" who show it had prophet mohammed in an episode and in fact also resulted in a cartoonist who went into hiding in seattle, she may well still be in hiding because of the solicitations of her murder by people in the united states. so this is a very serious issue. we've seen multiple people killed in the name of defending -- supposedly defamatory assaults on isl
