what we saw here in lake michigan a relatively shallow search. we can see these divers go down and swim to see the debris. very different than what we saw with mh-370 the search for that plane much deeper down towards the bottom of the sea, crews would have to use very special equipment an technology to get down to that. in this case we're seeing them go down to it and sim lartilar similarity. >> your story that you just profiled what's the status? >> reporter: we understand the naval history and heritage command they decided to temporarily suspend. a lot of the raising of these planes that are down at the bottom of lake michigan mainly because of the cost to recoup and maintain these planes and to say they have several that have already been raised that represent very well that world war ii era plane here in chicago area. >> interesting. george howell thank you. up next is it possible that the flight of 8501 successfully pulled off a water landing but then the storm could have sunk the plane? that's just one question from you and my panel of ans

boats on lake michigan are not moving anywhere. the coast guard resumed ice breaking operations first time since last winter. they have to keep the shipping leans open. they are calling it operation cold shovel. people have their hoods up and scarves over their faces despite windchill getting below negative 20. a lot of people are staying home, are staying home because they have to take care of their kids and you have hundreds and hundreds of school districts closed all over the midwest because of that bitter windchill temperature. even minneapolis where the threshold is negative 35. they have closed schools today because it is so cold. the real hazard, you have hazards from frostbite but seems most dangerous thing is the roads. in pennsylvania there was 18-car pileup out there. my cameraman came back from detroit and all along the highway you saw cars along the road, they had spun out on the ice. roads are very treacherous and to top it off, more snow on the way. nothing extreme. you're probably talking about three inches of snow

i'm on a break water in new buffalo, michigan on the shores of lake michigan, you see it blowing around with the intense wind we're getting right now. it's not letting up and it's not going to. it's been a brutal week in chicago where i live, we're going to be in four different states in four different days over the course of this past week. if you look at chicago, it's been a brutal week. should be for a low about 18 degrees. it has been a lot worse than that. and the snow we're getting right now. we've had snow here along the shores of lake michigan, lake-effect snow, when the big cold air mass comes in over the lake, the lake that's not frozen, you get condensation up into the clouds, comes down as snow. the snow right now is the other direction, it's the big mass of snow that's part of the system coming in. we're getting it from both directions, and i tell you, it's nasty right now. going to green bay tomorrow, folks -- >> there goes the shot. david: freezing up all over. cheryl: he's going to green bay, wisconsin, we're start a pool to get him a ticket to the game. david: at least

you can see that in the clouds, a couple showers over lake michigan this hour. then more cloudiness over the carolinas. that's going to be the storm that begins to fire up. it will be energized by that system so still dry over the carolinas. through the overnight this storm will take shape and bring a round of rain on sunday. here's what to expect. periods of rain, some heaviest in the afternoon. possibly an inch an quarter before the system is out of here. looks like the rain arrives from the south around day break, 7, 8 o'clock in the morning. there could be initially brief freezing rain up into the lehigh valley poconos but most likely this should all be plane rain and then the rain comes to an end by early evening, say by 5 o'clock this system could be long gone. let's time it out. 8 o'clock tomorrow morning that rain starts to move in from the south. notice a little bit of pink. that could be a few pockets of freezing rain some of the colder suburbs but that warmer air moves in. even in the poconos looking at steady rain. heaviest rain from the city eastwar

that heavy band across lake michigan is lighter in that area, but where we got the heavy snow are off the shores of lake erie and lake ontario. we have video to show you where we recorded over 2.5 inches of snow this afternoon. it's been snowing, coming down heavily. even places like buffalo total up a foot of snow. just in the bands of snow moving through today. it's specific. the lakes are not completely frozen over so the wind moves over the warmer water, picking up moisture and runs into the for example of the shore line. continuing to taper a little tonight. we'll have an increase as we get into tomorrow knowing, especially around lake erie. that's where we'll see heavier snow. cleveland, cold blustery with the snow coming down. the big concern is from southern kansas indianapolis to ohio. icy winter weather possible. we have warnings out, freezing rain advice for the areas. as the storm system brings up the moisture from the south, it's running into the cold air. as we get into later sunday it tracks east. we'll expect the snow to cross the north-east across main and it will be

it is so cold that much of lake michigan is now a sheet of ice. in chicago where the windchill is making it feel like a balmy minus six degrees. >> and it's only going to get worse, neil. we are out in front of the famous water tower here in chicago. this is a magnificent mile, i found this earlier on the street. somebody's t-shirt out here, look at this. listen, that's what that feels like negative six, 12 dwreezegrees. look at the windchills tomorrow. international falls, nation's icebox, minus 49 they say. milwaukee could be around minus 30. about the same here in chicago. could be as low as minus 16 as far south as st. louis it gets colder in the south as well. we had snow today we're going to get more snow tomorrow, much of it lake effect here around chicago. could be as much as another foot here, that made a mess of travel, not only here, but across the midwest and around the nation this morning as far to the east as washington, delays up to three and a half thousand today delays, cancellations now, latest number i had was 720. you can see p

how is this arctic blast impacting lake michigan, and how are you, sir? >> reporter: i'll tell ya, this is the worst day so far because we're getting it from both ends. you can see the snow starting to blow in now. earlier we had what's called lake effect snow, and maybe we've got some diagrams that show you what it is. it comes in off the lake with the cold arctic air over top of the warmer lake waters, get condensation, and that comes in as lake effect. we're getting it from another storm system, so we're getting snow from both directions, at least for the past day or so. frigid air continues with this snow, and if you take a look at p wind chills out there, you know, it's cold enough. we've been 0 or below all day, maybe inching over just a little bit here, and then you get the wind chill on top of that. we've had, you know, 20 mile-an-hour wind chill, or 20 mile-an-hour wind gusts so wind chills down in the -20 range, and if you look at them overnight, they're going to be cold.
