new england is at a stand still at this hour. potentially historic blizzard barreling down at this hour on parts of new england after moving in overnight. it brushed by new york but eight states are now in states of emergency. earlier this morning the blizzard warning was lifted for new york city, as i mentioned. and a new york stock exchange spokesman said today will be business as usual. they've changed their mind. the city turned into a virtual ghost town after transit has shut down and non-emergency vehicles have been ordered off the roads as a precaution. it's literally a ghost town on the streets of new york city. earlier forecasts called for up to three feet of snow in parts of kentucky massachusetts, and no, state. those numbers have now been downgraded. in parts of massachusetts and rhode island are now expected to see the worst. about two feet of snow. wind gusts have already topped 70 miles per hour in nantucket. right now there are 60 million people under a winter weather alert. and about 14 million people facing bliz

new york city was spared from the worst of it but new england is still getting slammed as we come on the air, parts of rhode island, mass marks new hampshire, and maine are still facing some blizzard conditions. long island, new york and connecticut have now been downgraded to a winter storm warning. that stretches north into canada. parts of new jersey and eastern new york state have a winter advisory. this storm tracked 50 to 75 miles east and that is why manhattan was spared and new england is still getting slammed. wind gusts in parts of massachusetts are 60 miles per hour. that's actually near hurricane force and is creating some dangerous whiteout conditions. some towns the snow is actually falling sideways. and now coastal flooding is a major concern, prompting evacuations. just look at these pictures. that's not even high tide. here's a run-down of who got how much. 30 inches in framingham massachusetts. just shy of that in long island. 21 inches in boston. foot and a 1/2 in proveidence rhode island. the height of the storm, more than 28,000 homes were without power. among to

england, for long island, for new york city. we're really just going to get sideswiped. we'll not get the bull's eye. storm tracker 6 double scan showing most of our region just dealing with light snow right now. however we do have a pocket of some heavier snow in parts of lancaster and chester county. you can see that area of purple right north of route 41. that's an area of some steadier heavier snow between route 30 and route 10 and it's just kind of sitting there. this system will really be getting cranked up in the overnight hours and that's when we'll see the potential for the heavy accumulating snow. that being said, i want to share this photo that was tweeted to me from marisa from lancaster, pennsylvania. this is route 30 taking taken about a half hour ago. you can see how road conditions are going downhill. so for this evening as we get the snow showers, you do want to be careful but between about 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock, now until 10 o'clock tonight we're looking at for the most part light snow showers. be careful fo

that's happening in new england. that's going to have a major impact on travel in our area. we're getting snow now, south philadelphia. you can see the snow is coming down. we've gotting bursts o heavier snow, buth4 far the heavier snow is well off to the north and east. boston will see heavy snowfall. philadelphia is seeing snow spread through the area and at times will get a burst of snow fall. that is accumulated snow though. it's not going to be the heavy snow inland. at the shore you'll see several inches of snow tapering off this afternoon for the atlantic city areand a it's quickly spreading across cape may county and into eastern cumberland county at this time. add to that strong gusting winds and the potential for strong blowing snow along the coastline still exists during the day. inland, yes, snow is falling. that's fairly light snow. you can see the wind is with us in philadelphia. if you're looking right toward the city from here at nbc 10 studios. this morning you'll see light snow. 24 degrees by 9:00. snow will still be coming down, but it will be on the light

it's high tide right now in new england. millions are threatened with coastal flooding from the epic storm that dumped more than two feet of snow in some places and lashed out with near-hurricane winds. seven states declared emergencies. this a very dangerous storm still. you can see one example right here as firefighters battle a wind-whipped blaze in the middle of a blizzard. snow is still coming down hard in a lot of parts of the region and will keep falling for several more hours. several hundred plows are out in boston in the middle of it all and could see record accumulations. our correspondents and analysts and newsmakers are all standing by. let's begin with the latest. brian todd is on the massachusetts coast. >> reporter: fierce winds created whiteout conditions up and down the northeast coast. we've got the wind causing whiteout knz. you've got the tide coming in causing potential flooding. we felt it firsthand on the jersey shore. the wind is just whipping us in the face from the north to the south. along the coa

and all of eastern new england. that's where you get the combination of snow plus a lot of wind blowing and drifting and poor visibility. so the morning is really the epicenter from new york northeastward across hartford, providence and portland. as we head deeper into the day, we're still tracking snow. it's not as intense, but it will continue to come down until wednesday morning. so this long-duration storm will have coastal impacts of wind, flooding and of course the snow totals. one to two feet over a huge area. local spots could see up to three feet of snow. and chasing records, the peak all-time storms in boston and new york city. a chance at them, but it's very tough to see totals this big. either way a lot of snow and certainly take it easy out there. many public transportation have been shut down. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>> a drone crash on the white house ground is raising new concerns this morning about the devices. the secret service says a hobbyist came forward to claim responsibil

we have met that here in new england. we'll continue to see it. basically, what we're looking at is a whiteout a persistent whiteout through the new england area. here is a look at the visibility. we're less than a mile in boston. you see it is pretty much a half mile in hartford. a mile in new york. and even down through philadelphia, and washington visibility is compromised. just keep in mind even where we're not talking, blockbuster snowfall, we still have very dangerous conditions with the visibility and it will still be slick out there. it is not all just about the snow with this storm. it is also about the winds. and it is also going to be about the cold and the ice. so everybody up and down the east coast is certainly going to take it easy. not just where we're expecting to see those big snowfalls. a little bit lesser winds coming down to the south. so from new york still a pretty decent wind gust 25 miles per hour. atlantic city is 20. philadelphia, 16 miles per hour. now, these winds will pick up through the course of the morning and into
