let's look above san jose nbc bay area's rob mayeda is looking at this for us. >> we're seeing really not fog, just haze and smoke hung over the bay area right now. 30s, 40s outside right now, another chilly night in the area, napa 46 there in san francisco. high pressure above the area, the storm tracker off to the north, fortunately not enough wind to stir up the smoke pollution, what has built up underneath this warm inversion area, cooler air is trapped below, acts like a room with a lower ceiling, this time of year, the worse pollutant, wood smoke, up to the higher areas, that is why you're being asked, no burning in the higher areas, with the dry pattern ahead this may linger all the way through tuesday. which obviously means dry conditions around the bay area until we see the one opportunity of rain and a chance of showers tonight, not from the weather but for outer space, we'll show you the view from the meteor shower coming up in just moments. >> a lot of people looking at that thank you, rob, a fallout to the flooding. people living in san mateo county can now apply for low

meteorologist rob mayeda is back. >> good to be back this evening. temperatures right now looking a little more like spring at half moon bay. 70 degrees. compared to 24 hours ago, temperatures have cooled off a little bit as the north winds put temperatures in the 60s and 70s. not quite as strong today. temperatures outside still looks and feels like spring around san jose in the low 60s right now. oakland, a bit cooler at 59 and san francisco, nothing but sunshine at 63 degrees. during the day tomorrow we'll begin to see clouds on the approach. not from the system here off to the west as you might expect this time of year but interestingly enough it's going to come out of the south, almost like a late summer pattern where you get the moisture in the desert southwest. this system will bring the only chance of seeing showers this week. is it going to be enough though, to offset what is shaping up to be a record dry finish for the month of january. right now it doesn't look like we'll get a lot of rain. we'll talk about that and another warming trend a

check in with the expert rob mayeda is watching. we're talking about the spare the air day. >> tomorrow not a spare the air day. a little more windshield out there. it would be nice to get rain or stronger windshield. it's been a very dry january. but again, the windshield's picking up tomorrow. right now mostly cloudy skies. you're looking at hazy skies in san jose 58 degrees. closer to san francisco, a little mist on the marin head lands right now. low and high clouds above into san francisco. dublin, it's been a chilly day. currently 53 degrees. some of the coldest temperatures today out near livermore and can concord. 54 degrees inland locations, livermore about 5 degrees cooler than 25 hours ago.s: it's these light offshore winds bringing in that fog from the central valley. that's that fog air conditioning as we sometimes refer to it in the tri-valley and solano county from the fog in the central valley which as we saw looking down on that patchy fog throughout the day, we had high clouds coming at you moving towards the scree

here's meteorologist rob mayeda. we're looking for any wet news here. >> right now there is the sunset over the silicon valley san jose. 62 degrees right now. notice less haze. we have a little more wind out there so we don't have a spare the air day coming up tomorrow. in oakland, we're down to 59 degrees. cool for parts of the east bay. a golden view of the golden gate bridge. unfortunately, no real signs of a storm on the way. we'll see increasing high clouds. off to the west, this is going to, for the most part send rain off the pacific northwest. it's a system down to the south, almost like a summer pattern where you get the waves that come off baja california. this system will by late tomorrow give us a chance of perhaps a few showers but may not be enough to offset a record dry january, a record, by the way, we broke just last year. coming up in the seven-day forecast, we'll tell you how long the chance of showers will stick around and what to expect next weekend that may be breaking records again. we'll talk

meteorologist rob mayeda joining us now. rob, is there any chance of rain this week? >> there is one chance of rain and a rare one. we wrapped up the weekend up to 72 at half moon bay, starting to cool down 50s and 60s outside right now. a little bit of an east wind will likely pump in more fog like we had this morning. heading into tomorrow morning, you see the low clouds there starting to line up around concord into napa. during the day we'll see increasing clouds. it will pull this system northward and bring us a chance of seeing some showers late tomorrow into tuesday. a relatively weak system but one that could toss a few showers away. on the other coast, a much stronger storm system taking shape. blizzard warnings now up for several states monday into tuesday where snow totals could be merkdasured by the foot. we'll talk more about how much rain we expect coming up in our microclimate forecast in a few minutes. >>> more details on that storm now, rob. they are calling it the great blizzard on the east coast. precautions and preparations under way for this huge w

rob mayeda has been watching this as well for the spare the air day. >> here you see off to dublin, the tri-valley the haze the leading cause of pollutions is the winds go light, and wood smoke, about 38% coming out of cars about 15% and other combustion and dust make up the other 12%. so the main problem here is the wood smoke, and because of that there is another no burn night in the bay area and the unhealthy pollution in the north, east south bay seeing the levels high at times not just for tonight but very likely for a while. as high pressure sets up in the bay area it is like taking the ceiling of a room and dropping it down overnight, the concentration gathers. the classic poor air quality, high pressure locked in on the west coast, not going anywhere for a while. we're seeing hazy skies like san francisco. could lead to more respiratory issues and health issues for folks that suffer from asthma and that sort of thing over the next few days. nbc's christie smith has normore. you talked to air quality officials, what do they recommend this time of year? >> reporter: well really wh

meteorologist rob mayeda joining us now. that's one way people love to war+ up. >> especially this time of year. unfortunately, the smoke and dust really adding up around the bay area as we're lined by coastal mountains to the west and to the east. the high pressure on top acting like an invisible lid as seen from the observatory across san jose valley. all the smoke and dust continues to build up with another spare the air day and night ahead. we have some very interesting temperatures ahead as high pressure strengthens. that's going to keep us at these poor air quality days and nights. but for the places south of san jose down towards santa cruz, we could see temperatures approaching close to 70 degrees. so we could be close to breaking some record highs as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. the spare the air days likely at least for the santa clara valley all the way through wednesday until we see is a storm system we hope will bring some rain and sierra snow back into the picture by thursday. a full look at that in t

here is rob mayeda. >> the bridge looks good. but fog could be a bit of an issue. right now visibility is already down to less than a half mile across the north bay. and it's the fog and the air quality that will be our weather headlines. heading into tomorrow morning, patchy dense fog at times. it could slow your morning drive. we'll see the low clouds breaking up around midnight. for the afternoon highs in the low to mid-60s. not a bad way to start your workweek with low 60s around san jose. closer to 60 in san francisco. for the north bay, we'll see patchy thick fog and low 60s for the afternoon. and could get as warm as the mid-60s through about the middle part of the week. so far we've been keeping pace with the thing you don't want to break this record. this is the all-time record dry january we saw last year. so far first third of the month, no rain. but that record is safe. well will not end the month without any rain. in fact, by the end of the week we'll see the next storm system come on in. as we get into friday afternoon and saturday, this should be the

for more we check in with meteorologist rob mayeda in for christina. >> we're seeing the thick fog not so much around san jose where it's 44 degrees for you. traveling across the san mateo bridge, the bay bridge, the carquinez straits you have the fog. adviseibilities at times less than a mile. livermore there less than a half mile, too, but the visibility in the south bay not too bad. it took some time yesterday for the low clouds to break up and looks like we could see something similar as we go through the day. for the morning the areas of low clouds probably at their thickest around the north bay and east bay valleys and gradually clearing skies as we get through the afternoon there, mostly clear as we head towards the afternoon and evening. if you're going to be around the coast and bay, watch out for another astronomical high tide, this is coming up just before 10:00 this morning. the king tides about seven foot high tide at ocean beach just before 10:00 this morning, look out for some unusual rip currents and again the potential theror some roadway flooding along the coast and i
