has been busy. that is fast-moving affair doug kammerer. >> it is. it will be out of here most likely by this time tomorrow so only here for the next 12 hours or so but it's coming down right now. storm team 4 radar showing we have snow across the region and that snow will be coming down fairly heavily moving through the rest of the night. everywhere you see it snowing here we've already gotten reports of some accumulated snow especially northern virginia portions of southern maryland. you could see where this storm is back down to the south. there's a lot of moisture continuing to make its way in and the temperatures are extremely cold. this is probably one of the coldest snowfalls we've seen in a while here with temperatures only around 12 in gaithersburg 16 manassas 15 in huntingtown and 16 in pawtuxet river. because of the cold air, that's why we think some of these numbers may be a little higher and that's why we added that plus. we'll auk about that in a second. winter storm warning in effect for everybody, including towards the pennsylvania line all of southern maryland

more on the totals what you can expect in your area let's go to meteorologist doug kammerer. >> yeah veronica. you mentioned warming temperatures as we move on throughout the day. if this storm was cold enough meaning everything was snow we would see well over a foot across the entire region. that's not going to happen. we've got warm air that will be moving into the region will start as snow then change over to ice and eventually everybody changes over the all rain. so this is what we're looking at right now for the snowfall forecast. e area of most confidence is back to the north and west. area of least confidence down to the south and east. where we're going to see that mixing te place. here's our current thinking down to the south and east looking at those numbers around a coating to an inch leonardtown, calvert county waldorf, 3 to 6 inches including d.c. but d.c. i'm thinking more around that 3-inch mark right now, and back to the west looking at 6 inches plus winchester martinsburg, hagerstown those are the areas that could see the most from this. we'll continue to watch this

doug kammerer and veronica johnson are tracking all this for us. when does it get heavy, you guys? >> yeah. we really think the heaviest time will be between around the 8:00 hour then the 3:00 in the morning hour. treacherous travel already. >> overnight storm for sure, the snow piling up quickly and becoming icy too by morning with such low temperatures. >> we've seen this with those temperatures nap's why everything is sticking right away. it does not take much. we saw it just the other night, saw about a tenth of an inch of snow and saw a lot of problems on the roadways saturday night, valentine's day. we'll get more snow than that. we have issues along 66 beltway snow covered, i 95 301 through southern maryland. one thing you notice look at frederick and hagerstown that's the drier air i've been talking act over the last hour. we'll get to that again in just a second but still a lot more moisture to come. the biggest area right down to the south. i think a line from washington right on down towards roanoke, south and east. that's where where we'll see the most snow for everybo

report on how people are dealing with all of this. >> but first, doug kammerer this arctic blast is something we don't normally see this late in the season right, doug? >> no as a matter of fact doreen if we do set a record today, it will be a record in the metro d.c. area. the old record 8. i think we'll get down to 6. that's the first time we have set a cold record in the month of february in a hundred years -- 1970 rather but that record has stood for over a hundred years. this is historic cold air. we do have snow approaching parts of the area this area of snow very heavy. when it comes in it drops a quick coating to a half inch right now around the camden springs area up to marlboro. look at the wind chills. 3 below in d.c. 13 below in hagerstown. that's why we have that wind chill advisory for wind chills between 5 below and 20 below overnight for the area. we tell you all day long not to be outdoors in this cold but we sent shomari stone outside. i just heard you, man, talking about it. you are freezing. >> >> reporter: i am freezing doug. i have on layers right now. to be ho

. chief meteorologist doug kammerer joins us. we shouldn't get used to that warm air, huh? >> no it will be here for one day, and that will be about it. then we're talking about even colder air moving in on thursday. this map might throw you off a little bit. take a look at the snow actually making its way closer to our region. this snow is part of a warm front. that warm front extending down from chicago right on down towards our area. south of that warm front we're going to see much warmer air move in during the day tomorrow. and that cold air and that snow will ride just to our north overnight tonight. so what are we expecting behind this? first, we'll be on the mild side during the day tomorrow. but then once that next cold front moves through, look at the wind chill forecast for thursday. 20 degrees at 11:00 a.m. 15 by 5:00 by 8:00 we're down to 11 degrees. that's in the d.c. metro area. many of you between zero and five. even colder than it was last night, and we got one more chance of snow. i've got that in the forecast as well coming up. >>> thanks doug. tonight, the government s

. it's also causing our temperatures to dip. let's get over to meteorologist doug kammerer. it is cold out there. >> we're talking wind chills in the single digits. they were really gusting and, boy, they brought down the temperatures quickly. look at the wind in gaithersburg. up to 56 miles per hour. the highest i saw in this area. wintergreen, the ski resort 65 miles per hour there. but closer to home annandale 54 miles per hour. so we did see some damage out there. we also saw power out ajs throughout the evening. now starting to see those a little bit better. hagerstown look at the wind chill, 5 degrees. that's how it feels. 16 towards washington. now, tomorrow morning the actual temperature will be around 21 degrees. it will be windy, it will be cold wind chills in the single digits to teens. we'll talk about how fast we'll see a warm-up here and what our next chances for snow are in a couple minutes. >>> we have team coverage on these wild winds that are knocking out power, even closing down some roads. >> the gusts are also sending trees on to houses. shomari stone is live

getting icy. let's go straight to chief meteorologist doug kammerer with what this means for the morning commute. >> that's the important question. as this continues to move through the overnight hours, some areas will see more ice t now take a look at the radar and we'll show you where this is. notice all the pink in the d.c. metro area and up to portions of maryland and snow as the colder air continues to race on down. in and around our region we're looking at the purple and the greens down to the south. that is rain. the purples, the sleet and the freezing rain in the pink here. we continue to see that right across the d.c. metro area. we are seeing reports along some of the roadways of some icy conditions. noti the temperatures 30 in gaithersburg 31 in camp springs. so we're below freezing in many areas. that means we'll continue to see the potential for ice through the overnight hours. the latest advisory has been updated through th have almost the entire state of maryland under that winter weather advisory including parts of southern maryland.s for you at 11:15. >> stay with news 4

doug kammerer. >> we talk about dry air coming into a system. we also talk about very cold air coming into this the system so once again show you that map. down to the south, 6 to 10 inches but we have plus in some areas to the north, 2 to 4 inches if we get another dry air, however, that could be lower, hagerstown frederick. 2 to 4, that's why we have you in that lower range there. this is the area we could see a bust of a forecast in this region. down to the south, 6 to 10 inches of snow. this we almost know you're going the get no problem. the difference is it's so cold outside it's easier to get more snow out of less liquid precipitation. what does that mean? well that means if we get 6 to 10 inches we could ease easily see that upwards of a foot in some locations with some of this moving in. same deal around the metro d.c. area on the moist side 4 to 6 inches and could see plus there too. some arias, northern virginia parts of maryland could get up to 8 inches. more about this moving through the rest of tonight. >>> all about what comes in during the overnight period. tomorrow mo

with more on that let's go to meteorologist doug kammerer. hey, doug. >> yeah as we talk about last week this won't be just a quick-hitting event as far as the cold air is concerned. we're talking about the coldest air we've seen so far this winter and man will it get cold. take a look. we've had cold air trapped along the portions of the new england area towards the midwest. we saw it here during the day today for parts of the area mild weather down to the south and that includes southern virginia today, which is still in the 60s. the cold air races in in the next few days and we're talking about brutal arctic air coming down across our region high temperatures only in the 20s a couple days windchills could be down close to zero maybe below zero. once again the coldest air of the season moving in in the next few days and looks like it wants to stay here for a while. >> we have temperatures in the 40s at first. your high of just 28 degrees on friday. and look at the morning temperatures for saturday. that again is valentine's day. 19 degrees starting out. and also on saturday there'

spots could get close to record lows. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is tracking the temperatures for your friday night. doug? >> yeah guys. we're not going to come even close to the record in d.c. that record is minus 1. i think we'll stay well that. but towards dulles the record is 10 tonight so we could actually make that as we wake up early tomorrow. look at the numbers to our west. 34 in d.c. look at this 16 in pittsburgh 18 in west virginia. that's the cold air that will continue to race across our region as we move through the night tonight. some areas saw snow showers early on. those have moved off too as the front has moved through the area. if you're heading out tonight on your friday night, yay, it's friday. temperatures will be on the cold side. down to 28 by 7, 25 by 9:00 dropping to 24 by 11:00, everybody into the teens tonight. we'll talk about how cold it is tonight and then how warm we get next week. but a couple of wintry-type systems in between. i have it all for you coming up in just a minute. >> doug thank you. >>> funding runs out for agency that protects our nat

we are amelia and chief meteorologist doug kammerer. what's the latest? >> you mentioned they want us to make sure we're going to desis everything tomorrow. tonight is not the issue. >> no. >> you mentioned freezing temperatures. tomorrow not the issue. it's tomorrow night things start to get dangerous. >> i don't think we can say that enough because you're going outside today, saying it's cold. so many people coming into work today talking about the cold but like doug's saying it's really saturday night into sunday, a high wind watch will be in effect for the entire area because we could see winds gusting to near 60 miles an hour. now, to give you kind of a frame of reference, how strong these wind could be, if you think back to sandy, winds that strong as sandy was impacting the area. we'll send it over to doug to kind of break down how strong the winds will be in your neighborhood. >> last night we saw wind over 40 to 50 miles per hour and tomorrow night, those winds will be 50 to 60 miles an hour. let's break it down for you tomorrow during the day. tomorrow's not a bad afternoon.

meteorologist doug kammerer in the storm center. >> as warm as we'll get this weekend it could be some of the coldest air we've seen so far this winter coming in this time next week. let's talk more about that pattern. that's making its way in here right now. we have cold air established in the great lakes and up toward the northeast. we're part of that cold air, mild air just to the south. this next storm system that will come through will bring us just rain allow that mild air to come up towards our area tomorrow into the day on sunday and even monday. that's why this next storm looks like all rain for us even though buffalo or rather boston could p another 8 to 12 inches of snow over the weekend. the cold air, it's here but after this storm leaves the cold air really begins to come in especially late next week. and we're talking about a very cold pattern that's going to set up and with this last cold snap last night into yesterday and today, only one or two days. this next one could last a lot longer. veronica? >> as we take a look at the early part of next week we've been tracking
