this is a huge embarrassment for the speaker, john boehner, he couldn't get this three week temporary extension of the funding for the department of homeland security through i assume when he allowed roll call to take place, had 218 votes necessary, didn't have 218 votes. 224 members voted against what he was proposing. now there's only a few hours left. you hear there are some options. you just heard congressman steve israel say if in fact they could have a longer term extension, he'd be willing to go with seven days. earlier. the white house said would sign the three-week extension into law if it was necessary to keep the department of homeland security funded past midnight tonight. i wasn't exactly sure if steve israel say meant for this fiscal year but that's the end of september. the new physicianfiscal year is october 1st or something longer in mind. if there's little goodwill on both sides over the next few hours, they can still work out a deal to at least keep it funded temporarily and then deal with the longer term funding in the days ahead. >> i think he meant october 1st wh

so john boehner is doing exactly as he's done since he started his speakership. he's allowing for the conservative faction of his conference to beat their chest, to scream and yell, to try and figure out a way to quote unquote stand up to the president regarding this issue of immigration in the past. it's been different issues, but at the end of the day, especially when mcconnell cuts this deal, we know that john boehner is going to have to take what mcconnell is giving him from the senate. it's just a question of when, not a question of if. so in this case, john boehner today at his press conference was trying to move it along, coming up with different marshawn lynches, just saying the same thing over and over. around 5:00 today, came to the realization that, okay, we're going to have to do something because we don't want to allow homeland security funding to expire. the one thing i will point out, lawrence, that came to my mind during that press conference, if the shoe was on the other foot, and a democrat had done something like that over the issue of homeland

i think john boehner has three options. number one he can go forward with the mcconnell plan butt a clean department of homeland security bill on the house floor. i was told by two house members who are good at counting the votes they would get about 65 to 75 republican votes. all the democratic votes. it goes forward, they're fine. if he does that it angers the conservatives. that's his other option. hold the line fight right here go against president obama on his immigration executive actions, and on this stage right now conservative media will love it. the house conservative fractions within the conference will love it. and they will totally be behind him. but at the risk of doing that aside from a shutdown is it makes president obama look better, and that's what the polling has indicated. number three and i think this is where we're going to end up do some sort of stop-gap measure, which weather it be weeks or months that allows the department of homeland security to be funded and perhaps tie that funding to what happen

speaker john boehner from ohio. earlier today the senate voted 68-31 on a clean funding bill meaning that there was nothing attached to it had nothing to do with immigration or anything else. they passed it 68-31, senate over the house and john boehner would not bring it to the floor. what he did bring to the floor was a three-week extension of funding for the department of homeland security. steny hoyer, the whip of the democrats, went to the floor and asked all democrats and people in his party not to support it. the democrats are holding the line when it comes to making sure that this is going to be a stand-alone fully-funded effort by the congress to protect the country. this, of course, means that over 200,000 employees now are going to be going to work and they're not going to be getting paid. so you're probably to be running into a lot of good attitudes at the airports around the country from tsa personnel. let's go now for more reaction for what happened the last hour on capitol hill. let's speak with congre

why can't house speaker john boehner do the same? >> i think john boehner is actually asking himself the same question carol. he's got lots of republicans over there who say hell no. they don't want anything to do with a vote that would look like they were giving assent in any way, shape or form to immigration. i think the only reason -- i was told this by a senior house democrat yesterday. the only reason that some republicans who are conservative and hate the president's immigration plan could potentially vote for this is that they don't want the department of homeland security to shut down when you have netanyahu coming here next week to give a speech on isis. how would that look? and there are some republicans and dana knows in better than anyone who understand that the public will blame them. our own cnn polling shows that 53% of americans would blame the republicans in congress if the dhs were to shut down and only 30% would blame the president. they understand the optics of this looks really bad for them. >> yes. the optics lo
