scott walker is the winner of this anti-union derby. he's the winner among the conservative base of the republican party now. he's at 25% in first place. jeb bush is in third place. that conservative base this year may deny what's always happened in the republican party before, which is they nominate the front frontrunner frontrunner, the next person in line. they may nominate scott walker. >> it was a big day in wisconsin today. this is the scene in madison wisconsin, today. the legislature is on a fast track to make wisconsin a right to work state. >> this bill, this mess that they are bringing upon approximate state of wisconsin is nothing more than a way to legalize and divide and conquer us within our workplaces. >> john nichols, the protest looks great, but the democrats are -- they have no power right now. depending on what the governor wants to do and what the republican legislature wants to do, this is a slam dunk isn't it? >> it looks like it but we should be very clear that there are some republicans that are waiver wavering.

i understand where scott walker is coming from. these are inherently gotcha questions, but it is very simple to answer. >> isn't a gotcha question hard to answer? >> there's harder gotcha questions than others but this one was pretty easy though. marco rubio showed how easy it is to do it. scott walker has turned this around in his benefit. he's fundraising off of his answer and mainly the attacks the media have made for refusing to answer this. there's a sense of degrievement that republicans have that conservatives have over the way the media treats them. maybe that was the audience that scott walker was catering to do when he did all this. >> glen, "the times" report is that walker is making a hard turn to the right to woo christians. i'm the standup governor who can make the tough calls, a fiscal conservative but now needs to weigh in on social issues. maybe that answer was to placate the base? >> it is my belief they like people like mike huckabee. when you're accusing that well known junk yard dog dan balls, everyone knows he

scott walker is running for president. and so this is the kind of thing he's going to be doing for the next year or so. he is, in fact increasingly seen as a top tier presidential candidate on the republican side. i think that is in part because conservatives nationwide, they may love the idea of destroying the university of wisconsin. i don't know. i think it's probably driven more by the fact that a lot of the other would-be top tier candidates who are supposed to be competing with scott walker right now, those other would-be top tier candidates are having trouble right out of the gate, new jersey governor chris christie has had a bad few weeks, including a bad overseas trip to london that got him a lot of bad headlines. former supporters in new jersey, including the campaign manager from the first time he ran for governor seem to be siding more with jeb bush than with him. chris christie's poll numbers at home in new jersey have absolutely tanked. conservative media buzz used to have chris christie at the top of the lis

what should scott walker learn from this? >> i think republicans have a specific problem with a dangerous feedback loop between partisan media and populous candidates. all of a sudden for some it feeds the worst discourse. all of a sudden, talk radio is the voice inside your head. you can't address the country that way. it's too inward looking. effective communicator would view the stereotype of the party that they're involved in some holy war as an opportunity to distinguish yourself to say i'm different here. i think rubio took that opportunity. i think that walker proved that he wasn't there yet. >> there was something written yesterday that i thought was interesting. ask any parent. our culture is -- civility is eroding. the internet this goes to your point michael. the internet easily reinforces hateful language. nobody wants to live in a country where the single measure of patriotism is that you agree with me. giuliani isn't a deplorable man. his words were. >> i don't think this has anything to do with social media or

newly elected republican governor scott walker rejecting a state budget shortfall introduces sweeping legislation called the budget repair bill. >> just like nearly every state across the country, we are broke. >> in order to close the gap, walker's bill proposes broad spending cuts, but also includes something many people don't expect. the elimination of collective bargaining rights for public employee unions. >> walker's plan was to make it much harder for public sector unions to bargain with state, county or local government or school districts. he was saying we're going to take away your right to exist. >> collective bargaining is not a right. in the public sector, collective bargaining is an expensive entitlement. >> state democrats dispute that union bargaining rights affect the state's budget situation and that wisconsin is broke. they also disagree with some of the bill's other provisions, which include privatizing state power plants and overhauling medicare. lena taylor is a democratic state senator who opposes the bill. >> it did transformational things to laws in wisconsin.
