morning, aaron. if you look behind me here, you can see that police tape still stretches across the front yard of this home on ridge drive. family members say they're heartbroken and they just don't know what happened. relatives had plans to meet dick and jodi vilardo on mother's day. when they didn't show family members came to their house and that's when the grim discovery was made. dick vilardo was found outside the back of the house and jodi vilardo was found inside. both were suffering from trauma to the upper body. the vilardos were a warm and loving couple. we know of no one who would want to harm them who would want to harm them. the vilardos were known for their work with the children's inn at nih, that's a for sick children participating in clinical trials. police are investigating this as a double murder but they have not said whether they believe the couple was targeted or if this is a random crime. no word on any suspects or arrests at this point. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath live in rockville, thank you. >>> new this morning, bladensburg road in northeas

mcgrath picks up the story in college park. megan? >> reporter: well, good morning aaron. police thought that daron wint was in new york city. but they missed him there. they were able to track him to a hotel in maryland. we received information that that hotel is the howard johnson's on route 1 in college park. you can see over my shoulder here the police officer who has been stationed here outside of that hotel all night long. we are expecting more activity here later on this morning. u.s. marshals perhaps coming by to take a closer look here. the fugitive task force was preparing to move in and arrest wint when they saw him getting into a car with several other people. u.s. marshals followed that car into the district of columbia and they pulled it over in the 1000 block of rhode island avenue and arrested wint as well as arrested several others who were with him. now, also stopped and impounded by police was a small box truck. wint has been charged with first degree murder in the deaths of the savopoulos family and their housekeeper, vera figurera. police say that he murdered

property tax hike in 35 years. many people do not think the tax hike went far enough, though. >> aaron, good morning. what's significant for everyone to know, everyone who lives in this county is this is the first property tax increase to come in more than 45 years. the 4% tax hike only pays for mandated state teacher parent funding. it doesn't add to the teener training or the plan to lower class sizes and the county schools been the county council says anything more than 4% was, quote, not affordable for county taxpayers. now, this is a big blow to the county executive and the school ceo who are under major pressure in this county to turn things around in the public schools. now, kevin max well the head of schools, released a statement afterwards saying the action continues the tradition of chronic underfunding in county schools. now, the county council took action to try and shore up some education dollars by requesting that 50% of casino dollars, casino revenue coming from the mgm would go straight to education. many people that i have been talking to in the run up to this vote tho

[ no audio ] way too fast at the time of this crash. 106 miles an hour in a section of track that should have been only been 50 mile an hour. so we have to learn more about what was happening at that time. investigators certainly want to talk to him. he has made a statement with the police. but he needs to talk to the ntsb -- his attorney says he has no recollection of what happened there. but we do know he hit the emergency brake right before the crash. in the next few days the ntsb is going to be interviewing the crew. they'll be doing a detailed analysis of the recorders, testing the signal systems. they'll check the system, the rail, everything they're looking at there. we have heard from the p.a. task force who is here doing a rescue and recovery operation. don't forget, there are still people who are unaccounted for. in this area. so there are dogs that are going through this area to help the p.a. task force figure out what they c

what we know about this. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning aaron. pretty tense moments as five firefighters called out a mayday early this morning in this fire on leaks lot way. you can see the frames traveling across the top of this home. it was really touch and go there for a while. fortunately the firefighters did get out. there was a partial collapse of the roof. that's what caused the scare here earlier in the overnight hours. those five firefighters were able to get out okay. they were taken to the hospital as a precaution and we're told that they don't have any burns or serious injuries. now, the homeowner apparently had a fire going in the fireplace. that caused a chimney fire which then extended to the roof. the roof is made out of wood shingles so once the fire got up into the roof line area, the attic area, it really got going. now, just a short time ago all the firefighters and fire equipment left the scene so the flames are out at this point. but there's extensive damage to the home. estimated at about $800,000. aaron, back to you in the studio. >> megan, t
