killed by fairfax county police two years ago. today a grand jury will begin hearing testimony as they take a closer look into the actions of the police officers on the scene that fateful day. the 46-year-old father of two was shot and killed back in august of 2013. gear was standing in the doorway of his springfield home unarmed and his hands up. his long time girlfriend had called police after the two argued. officer torres claimed gear jerked his hands toward his waist but the other officers on the scene never saw that happen. after gear was shot in the chest, it took officers more than one hour to finally go in and check on him. at that point gear had already died. torres is a 32-year-old police officer, nine years on the force. he is off the streets on administrative duty, has not been charged, but there will be an investigation. that begin today by the grand jury. >>> coming up at 6:30, i'll let you know who will come here to testify before the grand jury. we are live outside the fairfax county courthouse, delia goncalves, wusa9. >>> the bodies of two women killed in a boat

areas of centreville, fairfax, you're looking at an issue free commute thus far. just expect some volume. your next update coming up in roughly ten minutes. >> reporter: what safety changes if any have been made at metro since january? that's one of the biggest questions we hope to have answered today in a hearing on capitol hill. the hearing will focus on the safety issues on board metro that stem from the smoke-filled incident back in january when dozens of people were hurt and one woman died. in previous hearings we heard from engineers and other metro official abouts what went wrong that day when smoke filled the train and the operator says he had to wait to clear the tunnel. that operator james curly expressed his frustrations with metro saying that day he was repeatedly told by control to wait. he said people on board were coughing and vomiting. he had to wait about half an hour till they could be rescued which we now know was unfortunately too late for one woman. it's clear that that incident exposed major problems on metro and investigators said a lack of overall safety in metro'
