areas of centreville, fairfax, you're looking at an issue free commute thus far. just expect some volume. your next update coming up in roughly ten minutes. >> reporter: what safety changes if any have been made at metro since january? that's one of the biggest questions we hope to have answered today in a hearing on capitol hill. the hearing will focus on the safety issues on board metro that stem from the smoke-filled incident back in january when dozens of people were hurt and one woman died. in previous hearings we heard from engineers and other metro official abouts what went wrong that day when smoke filled the train and the operator says he had to wait to clear the tunnel. that operator james curly expressed his frustrations with metro saying that day he was repeatedly told by control to wait. he said people on board were coughing and vomiting. he had to wait about half an hour till they could be rescued which we now know was unfortunately too late for one woman. it's clear that that incident exposed major problems on metro and investigators said a lack of overall safety in metro'
