i'm charlie rose. nearly 29,000 firefighters are on the lines, but it is not enough to handle the more than 80 wildfires burning tonight in eight western states. 18 of them in california alone. in washington state, one fire has burned 62 square miles. firefighters have managed to get it 30% contained. danielle nottingham is there. >> reporter: this is what firefighters in central washington have been up against for the last four days. flames appear as quickly as firefighters can put them out. since we've been here, we've seen black hawk helicopters sent in by the national guard making water drops over new flames that have sparked up in the hills. matt eagan is one of 100 national guard members out here on the fire lines. he is exhausted after spending 16 hours a day combing the hillside for hot spots to protect homes in the line of fire. >> we're all pretty much beat. so i couldn't imagine doing this for the whole fire season, like the actual firefighters do. >> reporter: national guard team leader kur

i'm charlie rose. the military sending in reinforcements for the battle against wildfires that are burning across the west. late today the pentagon said it will provide 200 active duty soldiers to help with a fire in washington state. fires are burning in seven states. in california alone, they're destroying 1,000 acres an hour. extreme heat is making the battle all the more difficult. it has been a very hot day in much of the country. more about that in a moment. first danielle nottingham on the firelines in washington state. >> reporter: six wildfires have surrounded the city here. this is the view from the lake where at least three dozen homes were destroyed and 2,700 people were forced to flee. the flames still burn inside one of many home lost here in this lakeside community. for the residents who lived here, the loss is immeasurable. >> it was pretty scary. i have never seen a firestorm like this travel this fast. >> reporter: reggie collins is the c.e.o. of a fruit company. he escaped the flame,

i'm charlie rose. this is not supposed to happen. today, a commercial airline door landed in north carolina a few minutes before the rest of the plane. us airways airbus 8 three 21 was arriving from dallas, and it is the second safety scare involving the airline now part of american airlines, since the weekend. here's kris van cleave. >> reporter: the panel door in this picture fell off a us airways flight as it was approaching charlotte, north north carolina's airport this morning. brian francis watched as it landed on the seventh green of a golf course. the airline says the door is about 15 by 16 inches and weighs a few pounds. it came off an airbus a-321 like this one carrying 146 passengers. the door covers a hydraulic servicing area. the airline in a statement says, "it would not cause a flight safety issue. but the incident comes as the national transportation safety board announced it's launching an investigation into a close call involving another us airways a-321 landing at charlotte's airport

so, charlie, what else did we learn from the prosecutor today? >> reporter: well, norah, the french prosecutor said there is no doubt the suspect was intent on a terror attack. now, today, bare foot, blindfolded and wearing blue hospital pajamas, the suspect ayoub el khazzani was led to the french courthouse. french prosecutors said he looked at a jihadi vehicle on his cell phone he was in the bathroom on that train before launching his attack. french police found 270 bullets on him. and he seemed to specifically target that train, buying a first class ticket, and turning down cheaper seats on earlier trains which all seems to contradict his contention that he was only there to rob the train. >> all right, charlie d'agata, thank you. sacramento, california, is anxiously awaiting the return of the three americans who stopped the attack. airman first class spencer stone, oregon national guardsman alek skarlatos, and anthony sadler. carter evans is there. carter. >> reporter: norah, while the three men have become international heroes, in sacramento

charlie d'agata reports 71 were found dead in austria. >> reporter: their journey and lives ended here in the back of a freezer truck on a highway in austria. they appeared to have suffocateed in the searing heat, investigators said. the backdoor was wider shut. there were dents on the side from people apparently trying to push their way out. police found travel documents suggesting at least some were refugees fleeing the fighting in syria. and among the dead, they found a young girl, not more than two years old. more than 2,000 miles away, off the coast of libya, another tragedy was unfolding. bodies upons washed ashore. some of the 200 people who were feared to have drowned when two overloaded boats capsized. while rescuers did all they could to asset lives of refugees trapped in the hold of a boat where dozens died from breathing in exhaust fumes. by land and by sea, they're fleeing war and poverty, risking their lives in the hope of finding a better one in europe. the train station in budapest, hungary, is overflowing. it's where we found hazem alkadi, a syrian refugee members, inc

charlie d'agata picks up the story. >> reporter: video that appears to be shot inside the train shows the suspect face down and tied up. you can see a rifle he was carrying and one of the american men who brought him down after seeing a french passenger first confront the gunman, 22-year-old national guardsman alek skarlatos and his two friends moved in. >> i saw a guy entering the train with an a.k. and a handgun, and i just looked over at spencer and said, "let's go, go." and he jumped up, and i followed behind him by about three seconds. >> reporter: u.s. air force airman first class stone tackled the gunman, and skarlatos knocked him unconscious with the butt of his rifle. fellow friend anthony sadler and british passenger chris norman pinned the attacker down and stripped him of his weapons. we caught up with norman outside the police station in arras. why you chose to move forward rather than hiding? >> what else is there to do? arthur you sit down and you die or you get up and you die. >> reporter: stone was released from a french hospital this afternoon. gunman sliced into him
