i'm charlie rose, and this is our western edition. continuing fears of a global economic slowdown sent stock prices plummeting again today. the dow lost 530 points, or more than 3%. it was the worst day of the year and the ninth biggest point drop ever. for stockholders, jim axelrod tells us, it has been a week for the strong. ( bell rings ) >> reporter: the closing bell was the most welcome sound of the week on wall street, putting the bloodletting on hold. this was the worst week of the year. the dow lost more than 1,000 points, and it's now off more than 7.5% for the year. >> we've had a market that's done incredibly well since the lows in the spring of 2009 that probably ran too far too fast and needed to reset. >> reporter: economist max wolf says the u.s. stock market had long been the best global performer, attracting a lot of investment from under-performing countries, but the u.s. markets were still outpacing the broader economy. >> the u.s. stock market and assets had become the cleanest dirty shirt in the hamper, so everybo

and, charlie, mr. carter says that he will be cutting back on his schedule, but nonetheless, he'll be teaching sunday school as usual this weekend in his home town of plains. >> rose: thanks, bill. two republicans vying to become the 45th president took aim at each other last night at town meetings in new hampshire. the front-runner, donald trump, and the former front-runner, jeb bush. major garrett is in new hampshire. >> reporter: desperate to regain lost momentum during the summer of trump, jeb bush used separate new hampshire campaign events to question the g.o.p. front-runner's temperament. >> i'm running not because i have a-- you know, a desire to fulfill some kind of ego. i'm not a big personality. it's not about me. >> reporter: and his ability to go the distance. >> we've got to win. and i think you win with a broader-- you win when you campaign like this. you don't win when you're campaigning like this. you don't win when you're the large, you know, dog in the room where it's all about you.

but, charlie, nobody has ruled out international terrorism, either. >> rose: charlie d'agata in london. thank you. in a first, two female soldiers have completed the army's ranger school, a grueling test of mind and body only the toughest survive. mavid martin now with the women epo made history. ok feporter: this is a little of ehat it took for captain kris griest to become one of the first two women to make it through ranger school. torst lieutenant shaye haver is the other to survive the 62-day course, which subjects soldiers to nearly constant physical and mental stress on little food and less sleep. innger school is the make-or- break proving ground for the army's combat leaders, and it breaks more than it makes. g women started the course. only griest and haver made it to the end. 380 men started. only 94 finished. the army refused to officially identify either woman, in part co shield them from snarky ocmments, which began popping up on social media. some don't bear repeating, but cracks like, "what standards they lowered? did they only have to do one pullup?" were typical. thsp

i'm charlie rose. this is our western edition. the military sending in reinforcements for the battle against wildfires that are burning across the west. late today the pentagon said it will provide 200 active duty soldiers to help with a fire in washington state. fires are burning in seven states. in california alone, they're destroying 1,000 acres an hour. extreme heat is making the battle all the more difficult. it has been a very hot day in much of the country. more about that in a moment. first danielle nottingham on the fire lines in washington state. t reporter: six wildfires have surrounded the city of chelan. this is the view from the lake where at least three dozen homes were destroyed and 2,700 people were forced to flee. and the flames still burn inside one of many homes lost here in this lakeside community. and for the residents who lived here, the loss is immeasurable. >> it was pretty scary. i have never seen a firestorm like this travel this fast. >> reporter: reggie collins is the c.e.o. of chelan fruit thmpany. he

so, charlie, what else did we learn from the prosecutor today? >> reporter: well, norah, the french prosecutor said there is no doubts that the suspect was intent on a terror attack. now, today, bare foot, blindfolded and wearing blue hospital pajamas, the suspect ayoub el khazzani was led to the french courthouse. french prosecutors said he looked at a jihadi video on his cell phone as he was in the bathroom on that train before launching his attack. french police found 270 bullets on him. and he seemed to specifically target that train, buying a first class ticket, and turning down cheaper seats on earlier trains. which all seems to contradict his contention that he was only there to rob the train. >> o'donnell: all right, charlie d'agata, thank you. sacramento, california, is anxiously awaiting the return of the three americans who stopped the attack. airman first class spencer stone, oregon national guardsman alek skarlatos, and anthony sadler. carter evans is there. carter? >> reporter: norah, while the three men have become international he

as charlie d'agata reports, american airman and sacramento native spencer stone is being treated at a u.s. military hospital in germany. >> reporter: the welcoming party was a modest affair for returning hero but airman spencer stone with mom joyce by his side looked happy to be back with family real one and military one. there for the ride and support, buddy alek skarlatos a national guardsman himself. flying school is the u.s. army's overseas -- it's the center for the treatment of u.s. servicemen wounded on the battlefields of iraq and afghanistan. lying wounded himself in intensive care of a french hospital, virginia native who first wrestled the ak-47 from suspected gunman ayoub alka zanny. he said he looked at me and said -- >> i'm hit. i'm hit. >> reporter: it's all over, told me. he thought he was going to die. there was blood everywhere. but it wasn't over. >> he was squirting blood out of the left to right side of his neck. i just stuck two of my fingers in the hole, found what i thought to be the artery, pushed down and then the bleeding stopped. >> reporter: charlie d'agat

charlie d'agata reports 71 were found dead in austria. >> reporter: their journey and lives ended here in the back of a freezer truck on a highway in austria. they appeared to have suffocateed in the searing heat, investigators said. the backdoor was wider shut. there were dents on the side from people apparently trying to push their way out. police found travel documents suggesting at least some were refugees fleeing the fighting in syria. and among the dead, they found a young girl, not more than two years old. more than 2,000 miles away, off the coast of libya, another tragedy was unfolding. bodies upons washed ashore. some of the 200 people who were feared to have drowned when two overloaded boats capsized. while rescuers did all they could to asset lives of refugees trapped in the hold of a boat where dozens died from breathing in exhaust fumes. by land and by sea, they're fleeing war and poverty, risking their lives in the hope of finding a better one in europe. the train station in budapest, hungary, is overflowing. it's where we found hazem alkadi, a syrian refugee traveling wi
