in fairfax, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. jonathan: the man known as "route 29 batman" was laid to rest today. friends and family came out to say final goodbye to lenny robinson. funeral services were held at noon in owings mills. he would dress up as batman and cheer sick children at local hospitals and he died when a car hit him. after his custom-made bat mobile broke down. kimberly: the commuter bus service disrupted today because of a sick-out. the county says 16 workers unexpectedly called out sick, causing several routes to be canceled. this comes from a contract negotiation between the company that operates the buses, and union represents drivers. the union said it did not sanction the sick-out. jonathan: trial date set for three people accused of beating a 9-year-old boy over missing piece of birthday cake. jack garcia's mother, and his the uncle are scheduled for separate trials january 12. garcia's boyfriend robert wilson has a trial set for december 15. all three face several charges including second-degree murder.

jeff goldberg has late-breaking details. jeff: the breaking news in the newsroom, i just got off the phone moments ago with don geer, the father of john geer who says this afternoon he was given a call, got a call from the fairfax police department telling him that the special grand jury indicted officer adam torres on second-degree murder charges. he said we feel justice is finally per vailing. it's a shame justice took this long to get here, but another step in the right direction. nearly two years ago, what followed was a long-time of lack of answers. no answers for family and friends of john geer. protests and the controversy followed in terms of the wondering when family and friends would get answers to what happened. the news out that officer torres was the person that pulled the trigger in the standoff. further controversy and no answers that followed. finally in the spring, commonwealth attorney for fairfax county convening a special grand jury taking a special step to convene the grand jury in this case. they met fo

jeff goldberg has reaction from geer's loved ones. what are they saying today? jeff: they are expressing deep emotion, relief and satisfaction and anger. adam torres turned himself into authorities last night and he remains here in the fairfax county jail. the family members saying it shouldn't have take then long. the chief prosecutor is expressing regret. we spoke today with john geer's father who said, "it's ridiculous" that it took this long to get to this point. they indicted him on second-degree murder charges. this happened in a standoff with police at geer's springfield town hill. torres was not named for 17 months following the shooter and the fairfax county commonwealth attorney said the county attorney and the police chief rosslere withheld information from the case moving forward. they have heard from friends and family to determine adam torres should be tried for the murder. >> another stand more release that justice is being served. that the system does work. it has to move forecaster. >> i feel badly for the family. >> torres torres will have his

live in fairfax, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. anchor: we are following breaking news from the district. police on the scene of asis basis death investigation in southeast washington. they were called to an area right behind the stanton glen apartments this morning. john gonzalez is there. reporter: this afternoon we still have an active crime scene, detectives have been using canine cameras to collect evidence and at this moment, the medical examiner has arrived to remove this body. this is at the stanton glen apartments, where residents reported shots fired this morning. police are still working to confirm that but what we can tell you is that a man believed to be in his 20's was found behind the apartments here on stanton road in southeast d.c. and police calling this a suspicious death investigation. he was found by a woman walking her dog around 7:00 this morning. according to the area advisory commissioner, it appears this suspicious death does include foul play. the body was found, a male, and it was found a gunshot wound.

live in arlington, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. kimberly: thank you. this just in from the district where the d.c. police are just now wrapping up a press conference on the recent spike in crime. specifically about closing open murder cases. d.c. bureau chief sam ford has the details. sam? sam: homicide in d.c. are up 30% over last year. the mayor and the police chief talked about it in the news conference yesterday. today police officials held a news conference to announce they closed specific cases. the police officials in front of headquarters announced arrest in death of two victims. 25-year-old dexter motley killed last year and 44-year-old eric smith stabbed to death monday. in the case of motley, they charged darrell cruz already in jail for the alleged involvement of the recent shoot out on douglas road. in the stapping monday a -- stabbing monday, they arrested 57-year-old hector felix in that case. the family member of the victim eric smith held a vigil for him last night in the case. according to the information today, victim and the suspect

meteorologist, jeff smith in for lee goldberg with more of what is still headed our way. jeff. >> we have such an incredibly muggy atmosphere. it didn't take much to produce these thunderstorms. without much wind upstairs a few thousand feet, the storms didn't have an opportunity to move. check out this radar review from earlier this afternoon. this is western union county here. not too far. the storm sat over that location for hours on end, producing rain fall rates of 1 inch per hour. you extend that for four hours and check out these radar estimated rain fall amounts. upwards of close to 4 inches right along this u.s. 22 corridor. and that's why that road got washed out in places. those storms and showers have weakened significantly, once we lost that daytime heating. a will the of moisture off to our west. and this band of rain fall will become more intense, more consolidated as it heads toward the tristate area. in the meantime during the day tomorrow, we expect most, if not all of shower and thunderstorm activity to remain west of new york city. but again, if you fa

channel 7 eyewitness news. >> okay thank you jeff. >>> meteorologist lee goldberg is in the weather center with the latest on the storm, lee? >> all right it was a really classic situation. a lot of times in the middle of the night if you see a spike in humidity, it results in some pretty feisty thunderstorms. this was from about 2:00 in the morning until about 7:00 in the morning. but if you look at it even smaller window take it from 4:00 in the morning to 6:00, when the storms just blew up over parts of new york city, and then especially over the north shore of long island, this is right where jeff was. if you look at stobbing it all the way to wading river and look at the lightning display there and the big time winds. the rainfall by doppler radar estimate showing us the path here one to two inches of rain over the north shore of island and new york city and all the -- long island and new york city and all the storm reports. with just a 39-mile an hour gust here and breezy point. then it starts to go up to 50 miles an hour in near that on the north shore. nearertons neck and on

meteorologist jeff smith is in for lee goldberg who has the latest. >> even though we have had dry conditions lately we're expecting a lot of rain in a short period of time tomorrow morning, especially between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. that's why we have for the five boroughs, nassau county, lower westchester and lower fairfield counties forwards connecticut. the radar picture showing just a couple of sprinkles over north western new jersey up into sullivan county. a lot of shower and thunderstorm activity is off to the west over the ohio valley. all of this is going to consolidate into a nasty batch of heavy downpours later on tonight as it heads into the tri-state area. through midnight just maybe a spotty sprinkle or shower. watch what happens after midnight into the wee hours of the morning. very heavy rainfall moving over parts of new jersey approaching the city by 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. this may sit over new york city for 3 or 4 hours that. can cause some flooding in poor drainage locations. even during the afternoon after the heaviest rain moves offshore we can still see a scattered shower or thun

. >> jeff smith in for lee goldberg. >> the city has such a hard time cooling off, it's almost like a brick oven. absorbing all the sunlight, the concrete surfaces baking like crazy and at night you can't cool down. we're in the mid 80s right now. we degrees in central park. also tied a record in newark. that record in the park goes back more than 70 years, back to 1944. it's a true heat wave, our first one since july of 2014. 85 at laguardia airport. you head father -- farther outside of the city you're cooling off at 70 in monticello. dew point measuring the amount of moisture in the level, basically our comfort level straddling between uncomfortable and oppressive categories. there's an air quality alert for much of new jersey, through 5:30 on tuesday. this will be reissued in to the city of long island and lower hudson valley. you want to avoid strenuous activity outdoors especially if you have a heart or lung condition. the radar showing a couple showers that developed over southwestern. those are weakening right now. did cause a little minor flooding earlier tonight. lows gettin

meteorologist jeff smith is in for lee goldberg and has the latest. what can you tell us? >> we have a flash flood in effect for western essex and union county. i want to point you over to western union county. this storm has been sitting here for several hours rainfall per hour. some other orange county. this is the cell the town of mountain side, route 22 closed due to flash flooding in that area. that report came in radar estimates of over 3 inches of rain in this very isolated section of western union county that continues to get hammered north western ocean into monmouth county, thankfully that's been showing signing of weakening. into the early evening hours all these storms should weaken as indicated by our future cast as we lose that maximum daytime heating. the bad news, there could be more widespread downpours in your accuweather forecast. we'll tell you about that later on. >> thank you, jeff. >>> police are search ing for a couple from brooklyn after workers freed their baby from a locked hotel safe. it happened tuesday at a howard johnson. the infant's parents

lee goldberg was mentioning that onshore pretty strong into tomorrow. live from long beach, i'm meteorologist jeff smith for channel 7 eyewitness news. >> good to hear about those warnings. got to be careful the next few days. >> you can even just do your own forecast. if you notice that it's more humid out, we probably have more of a southerly wind or a wind coming off the ocean, that's going to stir up the rip currents a little bit more so we have had a temperate, not so humid summer. we haven't heard about brad rip that's where it is. dropping later tomorrow and into wednesday and that's when the wind will come off the land swimming situation. but not over the next 24 hours. so something to look at here in central park. got mainly clear skies, this camera is pointed off to the east, we are going to look at a picture right now of lower manhattan, we are looking at the west, what a difference. so we have thunderstorms over the poconos and catskills, they are not headed to new york city right now and we have clouds off to the west. these storms are tryi
