a panda giving birth to two panda cubs this weekend. the national zoo was already marking another celebration. diane joins us live with the celebration tonight. >> so far we are told that the giant panda cubs are doing well here at the zoo. this is only the third time that hasant panda in the u.s. given birth to a set of twins. it was all caught on camera here. even though the giant panda cubs were not on display at the national zoo, there was no shortage of excitement as they celebrated her second earth day with a fresh and frozen fruit cake. many came to the zoo the day after she gave birth to twins just to be a part of it all. video of the firstborn giant panda cub during its first exam. the court -- the cover treat this morning was the firstborn. one was kept warm in an incubator in the hopes of increasing survival. the frequency hinges on whether the mother allows it. >> the goal is for each of these cubs to spend precious time with their mom. >> i was like -- come on, we're leaving. let's go. the newest about additions, she convin

mei xiang's panda cub is a boy. scott: that is right. the zoo also announced who is the cub's father. abc7's john gonzalez has details. john: well, at this hour, the proud papa is celebrating with a blue crate because the big announcement was just made. biologists and zookeepers announced the newborn panda cub is a healthy active baby boy and the son of tian tian. a 50/50 chance that mother mei xiang who gave birth to two cubs artificially inseminated with term -- stem cells of two pandas. for genetic diversity and panda conservation, the other would have been a better choice but they agree having the father here with the newborn is essential for its development and healthy progress. the new panda cub weighs 167 grams today and a growing fast. and already very attached to its mother. >> at about 8:15 last evening, mei xiang started putting down the cub and tried to leave the den every one and a half to two hours. the cub would squeal and she would immediately turn back and run to its side and pick it up. john: officials determined the pa

why is it so hard for panda cubs to survive? >> this is really challenging for the mother to take care of two small cubs that need a lot of attention and that need to nurse on a regular basis. so we don't know in the wild exactly how the mothers are doing that, but what we know is probably at some point they abandon one of the cubs and do not really raise the two cubs. but in captivity, we can definitely maintain the two cubs alive until the adult age. >> brown: in the wild, you're saying the mother would often pick one, ensuring the survival of one? >> yes, but, again, those are really assumptions. we don't know exactly how it works in the wild. >> brown: well, so what do you do or can you do now? >> well, now, to really maximize the chances for both cubs to nurse properly and to bond with the mother, what we do is we remove one of the cubs. it stays in an incubator, proper temperature and humidity, while the mother is nursing one cub. then after that, we change, we swap, and it comes, you know, really easier for the mother to
