this is central wyoming all the way to cooksville, wyoming. that's the trip. it has not been tampered with. there might be a pickup this is what the unpaved sections of the trail looked like. central nebraska. they camped up there in the summer. that big bluff there to look for buffalo and other tribes, and that sort of thing. i just like the way the train started to bluff our covered wag on, you can see in the picture how brisk that flag is. you get used to it. same there from behind. yeah, so we got to a place, the wag wagon isn't not as stable. you forget that. we went up the hill too fast and the load shifted and just flipped. it did a perfect job of flipping, we didn't break the wheel. we had the cart, i love that moment because they knew -- we had prove we could get back on the trail quickly. i said this is going to be wonderful for the book. i hate your damn book. he had to fix it. i would say who is going -- we have to repair it, and he said, who is we. all eyes are on jackson hole, wyoming where u.s. federal reserve officials are gathering for their annual symposium. everyone is looking for hints about when policymakers will begin to raise interest rates. brendan greeley is covering the symposium and he will be interviewing some of the key players of the fed. let's begin on the reports of protests. that might not be the right description. it is a counter meeting eating held here at the jackson lake lodge. a talkstiglitz is giving and they are saying that a lot of communities in america have higher unemployment rates than the current national rate of five point percent -- 53% so they say the fed should hold off from raising rates. -- 5.3%. it's an interesting point but almost everybody is resting on the fed and monetary policy is a blunt instrument. the people who are meeting in protest of the fed's possible rate rise are exactly the same as the markets which are begging the fed not to do it. let us stop taking on so much risk. everyone is waiting on the fed and the real problem is

peter barns joining us there from wyoming. some of the and west brightest minds there on the economy and investment. well, speaking of the fed, ihs chief it economist is with me now. thank you so much in vance for joining us. you just heard from my colleague in wyoming about the conversation that he had this kind of wait and see attitude that the fed seems to be messaging. what is your take? >> well, i think before we had all this financial convulsion, it sure looked like september was the time that they pull the trigger. but in the past couple of weeks, things have been pretty dicey, liquidity dried up for a while in the global financial market. so, you know, if this continues, then clearly i think september is off the table. but if all of a sudden we get a rally in the u.s. markets and the data continued to look as strong as they did today, i think september may still be on the table, although i think the probability of a september hike has fallen just because of what has happened in the last couple of months. >> yes. and yo

a condom is are all in jackson hole, wyoming for the economic symposium. you have major players? surrealit is a little to be walking to dinner and dividing.o a the official topic of the conference this time around is inflation. the unofficial topic of the conference is whether or not the fed is going to move up to zero bound in september. what plays into both of those is china. whether it's slowdown will export deflation of around the world. we talked to barry eichengreen, a respected economic historian. we wanted to get perspective. he said that he is not that worried about china, but he did say that the chinese central bank, could take lessons in communication. greene: i would have what the policy and intent of the policymakers were. china did a devaluation, 2% on three percent more. it is potentially destabilizing, because people think the first 3% could be followed by the next 3%, and a third 3%. it is serious business. they did not explain the end game or the motivation. that is what got them into trouble. a they could take lesson from mark carney. yo

with us from wyoming, there of course for the fed coffins. so, steve, like many, you point to china, building roads and bridges to nowhere. but how much of that that false if you want to call it the spending and infrastructure is going to affect us here in the u.s.? >> hi, diedre, well, look, that metaphor of the sinkhole is a good metaphor i think right now for the chinese economy. what's happened is chinas their economy has started to failure, has used the obama economics playbook of cheap money and roads to nowhere and the shopping malls that are filled with people and massive high-rise office buildings that are unoccupied, and they continue to do that, diedre, they keep building things that are supposed to be quote investments but are empty and have very low return. so i do think china has some more room to fall. and given the fact that have made the second largest economy in the world, that will affect our markets and our economy going forward. not in a major, major way. but in a slight negative way. >> in a slight negative way for those

now the federal reserve bank of kansas city began his annual policy in jackson hole, wyoming. it's get to brendan for an update on the issues that are looming at this year's conference. brendan: the question this year, will the fed raise the fund rate in september? it is consistently said it is date-dependent. when i keep hearing people say, what data? one piece of data is volatility, what we have seen over the markets. we talked to esther george. this is what she said about paying attention to the markets. esther: we should expect volatility from time to time. we are in a. of some uncertainty. questions about china, global growth. i think we should expect some volatility. what it means for monetary policy, i think it is not yet clear. it is a convocation, something we watch, but i'm not ready to say it has a particularly long-term effect. brendan: there is the economic data from the economic analysis bureau in washington, d.c. well above everybody's estimates. that is a real piece the fed pays attention to. jackson hole is a group that is staging a counter conference. they ar
