john yang. what do you know about these issues and what the faa is saying about when they might allow american airlines back up in the air? >> reporter: well, american says that their computer system is slowly coming back, they are restoring the computer service across their system. what it was is that you couldn't check in, the computers at the airports, at the ticket counters and at the gates, were not working. you couldn't check in with those computers, you couldn't check in at kiosks. if you had a smartphone or other device or you checked in on your computer at home, you could still do that. you could still get your boarding passes that way. but the systems at the airports were down. now, american airlines is telling us that the systems are slowly coming back. they can give us no timeline as to when it will be back fully operational. we do know that there are long lines, we are hearing from both on social media from nbc news colleagues who are traveling today, whose families are traveling to
