all over pennsylvania people took videos and pictures of this bizarre event. two of these high tech radar balloons sit side by side in aberdeen maryland tied to the ground by 6,700 foot long cables. one of which failed somehow possibly due to the nasty wind and weather. they're part of a radar system being tested by the u.s. military. th te balloons with radar podsu un.derneath can monitor missiles, planes, boats, anything that flies beneath them. this balloon was blown almost straight north. it ascended for a time up from about 6,700 feet all the way up to 16,000 feet. that was aoncern for the faa. flights in the area had to be diverted around it. and then the radar balloon began to descend. for reasons we don't know right now it was being follow bide two u.s. fighter jets. we're told it was never shot at. the problem became the tethered the balloon to the ground as the balloon came closer to the ground. the mile long cable dragging along the ground very dangerous knocking out power to thousands in central pennsylvania. here's a meteoroloyost on the phone. >>
