elephant seal away from highway 37 and sonoma county. wildlife experts and chp officers are working to get the 500-pound female back into san pablo bay. this started yesterday near the sonoma raceway. the seal disrupted traffic as it kept trying to get over a center divider on 37th. kpix 5's jackie ward is along highway 37 this morning where workers from the marine mammal center returned a half-hour ago. >> reporter: we spotted the seal. we have doug haley from the marine mammal center here since 2 a.m. obviously primary concern is the safety of the seal so how do you think she is right now? >> she is doing good. she is swimming. she may be just a little confused right now as to how to get out of this lagoon. and right now, all we're doing here is observing. if 2 comes back on -- if it comes back on land, we'll take action. >> reporter: it's been a long night. what are you doing now, making sure she doesn't get into any troubled areas? >> make sure she doesn't get back on highway 37 for the safety of the drivers and of the elephant seal. >> reporter: were you surprised to see her? w

who caused a scene on highway 37 in sonoma county. bay area drivers are used to dealing with traffic, of course, but nothing like this. the wild encounter had drivers doing tudouble takes and had wildlife experts very concerned. the creature tried to cross the highway and, steph, did you spot the elephant seal this morning? >> yes, we did, actually. this morning she was in the waters here off of highway 37 near the sonoma raceway and i understand she's been making loops since basically yesterday afternoon. the concern, of course, is she actually came up on to this marking pot leer and also tried to cross the highway, actually got on to the roadway and tried to get over the divider yesterday. so the concern is safety for her, as well as the drivers, of course. now, we have video of the elephant seal believed to be female estimated at 400 to 500 pounds and swimming in loops since around 1:00 yesterday afternoon. u.s. fish and wildlife was able to get her back in the water twice. hoping to swim away where she was supposed to be and get her boarded. one big message today, though,

last two days trying to cross highway 37 in sonoma county has been safely moved back to the coast. >> reporter:it had been blocking traffic and seemed to be lost. we've also learned that the big mammal is pregnant. >> catherine:kron 4' charles clifford has an update. >> reporter:tuesday afternoon, this 900 pound adult female elephant seal crawled out of the bay just north of highway 37 in sonoma county. employees from the marin mammal center closed in and around 4pm, a veterinarian from the center tranquilized the seal. >>she was not taking our commands so unfortunately we had to sedate her. >> reporter:twenty people, using a large tarp then loaded the seal into the back of a flatbead truck, where it was tagged and examined. >>we examined her and took make sure she's healthy. the sonomgram also showed a fetus so she is pregnant. >>elephant seals usually give birth on a beach along the coast, not this far inland and because highway 37 is nearby it was decided that the best idea was to transport the seal back to the ocean. >>with this busy road we were really lucky she didn't get hi

sonoma county. rescuers had to rent a flat bed truck to rescue the massive animal. they finally made the rescue. kpix5's andria borba shows us this was one stubborn seal. >> reporter: in the dark of a point reyes night, the elephant seal that put on a show two days in sonoma county is finally back where she belongs. in this case, with other expectant moms. >> this is an area that is really protected. there is a large colony of elephant seals. moms and pups of the it is everything she would need in this area. >> reporter: because it is pupping season and so as not to disturb the outdoor nursery, it was lights off for the return effort at chimney rock. staffers from the marine mammal center tried to corral the 900- pound mama to be for hours with kayaks but eventually had to tranquilize her to get her back home. after an ultrasound, they realized why she ended up a peninsula away from where i she should have been. she was pregnant. >> she must have gotten sidetracked and was looking for a place to have her pup. >> reporter: she caused quite a commotion yesterday. and at one point, was
