the studio by paul brennan who has been following all of the developments of those attacks since they happened in november. first of all what is your impression, reaction to this arrest. >> reporter: first of all we saw the photograph of saleh abdeslam just there. i would be sewerous to know what he looks like now. has he changed his appearance somewhat? because to remain on the run for four months is no mean feet. it's difficult, i would imagine. and the ability of him and his support group to keep him out of the attention of the police is also something that the intelligent services will want to understand. the other thing is that the deputy mayor is saying that -- he has confirmed that saleh has been captured, had been rounded in the leg, and another man has been arrested too, and a third person may have been involved and may still be in that address. that might offer some explanation as to why we just heard the sounds. it could be stun grenades. it could be frame charges which are used by the special police to take out a window frame in its entirety, it could be they are just popp

they are on antidepressant medication and paul brennan joins us now from london, interesting developments there paul, what will the impact be? >> indeed. well the impact will be far reaching jane. we knew about the mechanics of this crash very early on, the black box recorders were recovered from that hill side in the french alps and the preliminary report issued two months after the crash in may of 2015 so we knew exactly how the copilot locked his captain out of the cockpit and calmly steered the auto pilot of the german wings plane into the hill side killing 149 people aboard the plane, what the final report from french air accident investigators have gone in wide and systemic issues that allowed it to happen and ways they recommend can be changed to prevent it from happening again, there are 11 recommends they have issued. they have said that lubitz was consulting doctors for some period of time, for years before the fatal crash but there was an issue because the doctors were not obliged to tell the regulators or indeed his employer that he was having mental problems. one

brennan. he spent time in mollenbeck following the investigation of the paris attacks. paul, we have some footage of a man we don't know his identity being dragged by police into a car. >> yes, i've had a chance to look a little bit more detail at this footage. it's impossible to confirm whether or not it is salah be abdeslam. the person confirmed by police officers, they are pointing the automatic rifles at the suspect. he appears to be injured in the leg. he is limping. his right leg is not supporting his weight. and that if you put the to twoagtwotogether, might make yoe that individual is salah abdeslam. he's keeping that right leg up. that would indicate that perhaps, of the two people that we knew had been arrested at that phase of the operation the person we are seeing in the video there is salah abdeslam. but as i say no confirmation from the authorities. >> what we see in those pictures seem to be consistent with reports that abdeslam suffered from a leg injury and of course, police would be very careful about the information that they communicate. because things are still o

done is done. >> reporter: crossing to brussels and speaking to our correspondent paul brennan who will tell us about the ongoing investigation and the latest on that, paul? >> reporter: yeah, it's been busy overnight, i have to say there have been more arrests and total of seven now because the total from last night was six and we hear this morning there has been an additional arrest in the district of forest so that brings it to seven by my count and awaiting for official confirmation from the prosecutors office and do not entertain telephone calls but has press release and waiting for that. with regard to six arrests last night and three of them curiously appear to be outside the federal prosecutor's office and it's not clear whether that was a cast up in the streets or whether these were people that were actually there and subsequently arrested. there was another arrest that took place two in yeta and one in the brussels district named brussels so a total of six and one more in forest. in all of these the police went in taking precautions, sorry taking every precaution and full

we are joined by correspondent paul brennan and we are hearing more waves this morning. >> reporter: yes, we've had as you know six raids, six arrests which took place last night, that is thursday night into friday. a series of raids across a wide area of the brussels and surrounding suburbs. places like sky beck and yeta and three arrests in brussels outside the federal prosecutors office and one arrested in the burrow of brussels itself and will be more information released by the federal prosecutor some point during this morning on those. this morning we heard of yet more arrests and yet more raids in a district called forest. the prosecutors so far only saying that several raids and several arrests without being specific about the numbers were promising more details when they are able to clarify the situation. as far as the people who were arrested yesterday, they will now have to go before an investigative magistrate and rule on whether or not there is sufficient evidence to press charges or continue with their detention and that will be sorted out during the course of the next

transportation hub. turkish police are blaming turkish militants for the blast. al jazeera's paul brennan has more. >> reporter: the bombers targeted an area of a park and square, comprising a bus station, commercial center and gardens, timed to strike at the crowds. there were chaotic scenes in the aftermath. in a statement the government's office says the blast was caused by a car bomb. other reports suggested it was a suicide attack. the prime minister convened an emergency security meeting. the area is close to government buildings. a fleet of ambulances treated many victims, fire crews brought in to douse the flames and deal with the wreckage of vehicles caught up in the blast. a bus was destroyed. >> there was a woman sitting behind me. her seat blew away. something hit me here, and pierced through. there was a car, a black car. five or six died in the bus. the neck of one severed. something pierced me through here. i have one in my arm. >> turkey has been hit by a spate of attacks since the middle of last year. last month 29 people, mainly military personnel, were killed in a suicide c

, let's speak to al jazeera's paul brennan, with us at the hague. give us some background to this case. what is he alleged to have done? >> as you can see, as you saw from those pictures, judge sylvia steiner has begun reading out the summary judgment in this case. it has been since 2010 when he was put on trial here at the hague. closing arguments finished in november, 2014 and it's been 18 months for the judge to guess try to work out exactly what the verdicts are going to be. five charges he faces, two crimes against humanity, murder and rape and two counts of war crimes, rape and pillaging. they date back to 2002, when he sent his private army across the northern border to prop up the president of the central african republic who was subject to an attempted coup at the time, but what they did when they got there has led to international horror. some of the victim's stories are too horrifying to report. he is accused of war crimes with rape as the main weapon. prosecutors allege he sent his personal militia across the border to the central african republic in too 2002. he was hoping

this earth. >> paul brennan is live in brussels this morning. paul what is the latest on the raids? >> reporter: yes, even as john kerry was making that tour of the airport building, police operations were ongoing here in brussels. we had six arrests on thursday night. three people were released but three remain in custody as a result of those operations. and then more operations on friday morning here, brussels time, in which three people have been arrested. there were two armed operations, all of the cameras were at one operation where we know one man was wounded in the leg and taken into custody. there was another armed operation in which another suspect was also wounded in the leg by armed police. that was in the forest district. so three more people taken into custody during the course of the day. and the french president has been saying that the intelligence forces cooperatively of belgium and france together are trying to dismantle what they describe as the terrorist cell responsible for the brussels attack and november's paris attacks. >> there is also more evidence of mist

attacks. paul brennan reports from brussels. >> reporter: how many attackers were involved in the brussels bombings. cc tv footage showed three at the airport. two are dead, one on the run. but belgian state media now says there may have been two people involved in the blast at malbec station. the suicide bomber and another man who may still be at large. the background of airport bomber should perhaps have rung alarm bells. in january 2010 he was involved in a violent armed robbery at a money exchange office in brussels, shooting at police with a rifle. in september 2010 he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison. but in october 2014, he was released on parole and absconded. the first indication of isil affiliation came in june 2015 when he was arrested in turkey apparently en route to syria. turkey says it warned both the dutch and belgian authorities that he posed a serious danger. salah abdeslam's lawyer appeared in front of the court. emerging after a hearing he announced that his client will no longer resist extradition to paris. >> reporter: why does he want to go

at the request of police. not everywhere complied as paul brennan reports from brussels. >> sunday's intended memorial was postponed. security was tight around a gathering place where many came to pay their respects since last tuesday. while soldiers watched the mourners, special police units launched a dozen new raids and arrested suspects. a postponement created a vacuum which others were key to fill. out of the railway station was a large crowd of belgiums. they marched to memorial square and muscled their way to the steps, which is a focal point of the movement. >> just a statement to say we love belgium. itself our country. europe, stick to your own. >> reporter: then the mood turned ugly. the sense of sorrow and greece, which is overwhelming since the tuesday bomb attack gave way to violence and anger. >> reporter: with water canon and pepper spray the group was pushed back, but not before unfurling their banner one last time. belgium prosecutors charged a man called faycalc with attempted murder and murder, but will not confirm that his full name is faycal cheffou

we're joined in the studio by paul brennan who spent time in mullenbeck following the paris attacks. we're all wondering where he was. tell us what you think would have gone into the four months of investigation from november until now. >> what is really curious is in these four months police have been intensively trying to find this man. he is the one surviving member of the core gang. for whatever reason he appears to have dumped his suicide vest in paris. he fled the scene, and was picked up by two accomplices, was able to escape across the boarder despite being stopped by police. the fact that he has managed t ' evade capture for the last four months is somewhat of a surprise. there have been raids, and yet they have not appeared to get any closer to him. it was not just the road stop that let him through. there were other raids which took place. one, for example, police waited outside the house until 5:00 am because belgian law says they are not allowed to go in during the hours of darkness. the belief was certainly in the belgian media that he had been in there, and escaped ca
