i just got off the phone with the pg and e representative. she tells me there was an equipment problem that led to a fire at a substation and that, in turn, triggered in large outage impacting people through the east bay. we are into downtown berkeley. here's the situation along shaddock avenue. you can see the lights are out. it is the case at many intersections through the east way. a major inconvenience for drivers in this area. it left a couple of people inside stuck inside the elevator at the hotel shaddock this morning. we were there at that scene. berkeley firefighters were called in. they had to use special equipment to rescue those two people from the elevator. now, this outage also prompted the closure of the downtown berkeley bart station. bart says because there was no power, trains were not stopping at the station for a time, but that station has since re- opened. now, the outage happened about 9:30 this morning and it is due to a fire at that pg&e substation. people were without power in berkeley, richmond, san pablo and el cerr
