unfolded this evening outside of the convention center in anaheim, california. gary tuchman is there for us. you followed the protests all day. what happened? >> reporter: even before donald trump took the stage at the anaheim convention center, dozens of people who do not like donald trump were gathered outside ready to protest. there would be more than 100 protesters but outnumbered by the police. more than 300 police officers, mostly on horseback, motorcycle, foot and car from the orange county sheriff's office, from the anaheim city police department and other municipalities in this county were out in full force. things were tense at times. five people detained. some were throwing rocks or bottles. there was very little violence and nobody was hurt. they were able to forestall that. we talked to some of the proteste protesters. someone said they had never been to a protest before. they had in common an intense hatred of donald trump. outside of this arena, an intense hatred and inside the arena, an intense love. that's a recipe for problems in the months and

donald trump had a rally here around noon at the anaheim convention center. a number of protesters were outside. after the rally, they stuck around. at first law enforcement let them stay peaceful. they wanted to stick around, there were a number, several dozens that had their faces covered who seemed intent on creating some kind of violent situation. members of law enforcement continued to tell them they had formed an unlawful protest, if they did not disperse they would be arrested. that's when a wall of officers, many of whom were mounted on horseback, started to push the protesters down the street. they were kicking cars, throwing rocks, lighting trash cans and clothing on fire. at one point the officers seemed to have enough. they picked out individual protesters, broke through their own line, arrested them and pulled them back behind the line. eight people were arrested. a lot of this played out a block from disneyland where a flub of families could actually see this on top of roller coasters, they could see all of this playing out, as they were trying

we're in anaheim, california. a block away from disney world. donald trump will be speaking at 3:00 eastern time, noon pacific here in anaheim and police are expecting there could be a lot of protesters that show up. let's look at what happened last night in new mexico. it started off peacefully enough. as the sun went down, it started turning violent. t-shirts and flags and a big trump sign were lit on fire. protesters broke through barricades. a number of police officers were hurt, and as far as we know there was only one arrest and we hear a door at the convention center where trump was speaking was smashed in. this all happened after trump left. inside the rally, prior to that, trump was interrupted a number of times by protesters and as he typically does, he treated it as sport. he went after new mexico governor suzannea martinez who so far has refused to endorse him. >> we have to get your governor to get going. she's got to do a better job. okay? she's got to do a better job. she's not doing the job. hey, maybe i'll run for governor of ne
