bernie sanders taking oregon. the headline is all about bernie sanders defiant statement last night in the question of whether the democratic party will be able to unite for the general election. just moments ago on this show we heard from jeff weaver, the sanders campaign manager. he struck a more conciliatory tone stressing that the dispute between the democratic party and sanders campaign was more personal between democratic national chair debbie wasserman schultz and their campaign and state of nevada. and the sanders campaign stressing that bernie sanders would be behind hillary clinton and opposed to donald trump in the general election. donald trump this morning all over twitter trying to coax bernie sanders supporters to his side saying the democratic process rigged against sanders saying sanders voters basically should give him a look. let's talk about what we heard from bernie sanders and what we heard from the two campaigns with our panel. we have with us jeff greenfield, contributor with politico. jeff

bernie sanders is the opposite. it is not that he either listens to the democratic establishment or dictates to them. they don't fear them. the candidate they preferred is winning, is going to win. there is no debt on either side of the negotiations and he doesn't fear them. that is the issue. and why would he? what is he going to do? >> at the end of the day, will he say to the supporters, we are part of the democratic party, our home is the democratic party, we must make the democratic party more welcoming to us and more to our liking, but this is where we live. does he say that at the end of the day? that, i think, absolutely, after nevada and after the fight that happened over nevada today, is a hugely open question. >> i think if she loses, we'll look back at this period, these couple of weeks when the most damage was inflicted upon her. week after week of humiliating loss and the commentary about how bernie sanders doesn't care about the democratic party, well, listen to trump echo every nasty thing bernie san

bernie sanders winning them. bernie sanders this one's closer. this one bernie sanders winning by a pretty healthy margin. you add that up, you do see a pattern starting to develop with sanders winning and in some cases winning quite comfort aab. hillary clinton has this one area in the state and otherwise it seems to be filling in for bernie sanders. since we've been above 15%, 18% it's held in this ballpark. at 25% if you're inside the sanders campaign, you think you're going to get the victory that you wanted and needed, democratic rules proportional, the delegates, bernie sanders will only pick up a handful of delegates. his net gain of delegates, this 29 at stake, his net gain will be five or six. >> walk us through california june 7th. he has to do amazing in order to beat her. she's got such an advantage already. >> coming into tonight she has a 301 lead in pledged delegates, he has to win 66% of the remaining pledged delegates to catch her, to beat her by one, to have a tie at the end. if he were to do something like that and come back, y

there is a bernie sanders backdrop outside. it's not unusual for him to talk to the overflow crowd before coming in for the main event. we'll see if he's doing that and if that may delay him here. but what he's hoping for is a strong finish here in the final contest, pushing towards june 7th, that big day with a series of contests, and june 14th, the final time where voters will have their say in the washington, d.c., primary. he says he's going to push all the way to philadelphia. all the way to the convention. but right now, bernie sanders is facing almost insurmountable odds against hillary clinton. and he's fighting as much for influence in the democratic platform as he is to win the nomination. and you really can't deny the enthusiasm that he gets in some places. he thinks, and this is what i'm hearing from his aides, that he will be creating enthusiasm in these final states in a way that can only help the democratic party, and that is the argument that he and others around here were making, for his case to stay in. >> and

so how come bernie sanders keeps winning states? this is still a hot contest on the democratic side and it's going to go all the way to the convention. kevin? >> on that point, the voters are not yet ready to buy into the story line that this campaign is over. and i think they want to continually send messages to the front-runners or the supposed front-runners that they have a voice in this and they're not very happy. polls in places like florida, pennsylvania, ohio right now are not predictive and west virginia is not exactly the 50-yard-line of american politics. a lot of what we saw with some of these voters is not necessarily predictive of performances we'll see with a much wider, a much broader, a much more diverse electorate in november. >> what are you saying? >> we take a look at the microcosm that west virginia voters presented us and what it says about hillary clinton is not necessarily predictive of what a national electorate will say -- >> or the democrats don't win. >> do you think the polls matter now? do you think it

to the bernie sanders' supporters even bernie sanders doesn't get completely onboard with a hillary clinton candidacy, they'll still rally behind her. she really needs those people if she's going to beat donald trump. >> lot of sanders' supporters saying they're going to sit out if sanders doesn't take on the nomination and go on and win it. obviously, she has the process in place to win that nomination. they're not going anywhere those guys. they're vocal about their opposition of the process. >> not only sit it out, some evidence, some polls show as many as 1 in 5 bernie sanders' supporters may support donald trump. there's a possibility that a segment of those bernie supporters could go to donald trump and of course that's not good for hillary clinton. >> bernie sanders continues to call out donald trump to debate him. initially donald trump initiated the idea now he's backed out. what does bernie sanders gain by keeping this challenge arrive sf. >> because that would raise his profile, put him on the stage with the republican nominee. so, it would kind of build his brand. donald

bernie sanders beat hillary clinton by 46 points. bernie sanders had been pointing to this win a lot this year because he's been saying take a look at a state like washington, i won by 46 points. the super delegates in that state should honor that 46 point win that i had. they have no business voting for hillary clinton. but then this week, washington held its primary, its nonbinding primary. and hillary clinton won the primary. here's the key. turnout for the caucuses in march, it was just over 200,000. turnout for the primary this week, remember, this is a mail-in primary so they haven't counted all the ballots yet, that's why you see the asterisk there, turnout will be about four times higher. three or four times higher in the primary than in the caucuses. you got a much higher voter turnout. you got a much broader collection of voters participating in the democratic primary in washington state and when they were given the option, do you want to vote for hillary clinton or bernie sanders for president, more checked off hillary cli

and that's one reason bernie sanders did so well tonight. >> bernie sanders has this argument. he says the math doesn't look great for me. but i'm the one who can beat donald trump in the general election in november. what happens when you have outside versus outsider? >> well, you're familiar with the exit polling and interesting when you look at the head to head match-up between trump and sanders or trump and clinton, in west virginia, about 33% of democrats said they would vote for trump and roughly the same number said they would vote for trump in a head to head match-up with bernie sanders. you will have democrats who will vote for trump in west virginia. whether that will happen in other parts of the country, west virginia is unique in many ways in that it is a state that is suffering economically and trump's economic message and his trade message works very effectively in west virginia and states like west virginia. >> you talk about states like it. and you also think about states that border west virginia, places like ohio, the eastern parts of ohio that are big coal co
