it was coming from paris. paris to cairo. it disappeared about 4:07 in the morning, just a little bit over an hour ago. and again, the route was from paris to cairo. and i just asked mary david a short time ago what route were they taking, and this is coming again from cnn. producers, and it appears they took off from paris, over croatia, sort of went to the side of italy oe-mails, you'll route they have for 804. okay, this is a presumed route. it may not be the specific route, over greece, over the mediterranean sea, and again, landing in cairo, egypt. what is that like in that area, mary schiavo? >> well, it's very, very busy traffic area, except not usually this early in the morning. when you look at flight aware and other tracking services, you just see an awful lot of flights on this particular route. the -- it's hard to, you know, guess what the weather is. there's a fair amount of weather, kind of a little to the east of there, you get a little bit more -- a bit more of the weather. i don't have, i'm not finding right

elaine is in paris right now. we'll bring in cbs news national transportation safety board expert and former chairman of the ntsb, mark rosenker from london. we know 56 were on board, ten crew members. the flight had crossed into egyptian airspace and had a ways to go before it was close to cairo's airport. it was at a cruising altitude, we understand, 37,000 feet, about ten miles from the egyptian airspace. let's talk about what might be happening now. it's believed that it went down around the mediterranean sea. i assume that investigators are looking in two areas. they're considering what might have brought this plane down could and they're looking at the search and rescue or recovery efforts. what's happening right now in terms of this mystery? >> the first thing they have to do is find the aircraft. they'll be trying to listen for the emergency locator transmitters which, in fact, go through a satellite. hopefully that will pinpoint where most of the aircraft might be. they'll be looking carefully to find, to

i want to bring in keir simmons who is here with me in paris. keir, we started talking about the question could something have happened here that caused that plane to go down. >> right. >> talk a little about the investigation that's going along at the stops along the way. >> you know, what happened here will be a question probably whatever they defined happened to the plane. if it was a bomb, and you've made clear we don't know that for sure, but if it was, then they'll want to know how it got on board that plane and the first place they'll look will be here. if it was a mechanical failure, they'll be wanting to look at what happened here, the repairs, the servicing of the airplane. remember, airbus is not far away from us so the spotlight will come back here, pretty much whatever scenario plays out, i guess, unless it was some kind of crew failure that caused the crash, in which case, of course, they egyptair employees. the focus then would go back to cairo. but we know something about where the plane went during the period before it took off

it took off from paris. when they found some of this debris, assuming that they do find this debris, where do they take this debris? does it go back to cairo? does it go back to paris? or to france, rather, because they have that laboratory where they can analyze these pieces of wreckage. >> reporter: they're taking the lead, the egyptian air traffic investigators, but we know the three air traffic investigators from france have left to join that investigation. and also, technicians from airbus as well, the manufacturer of the plane to advise. certainly, in other investigations they've been sent to the u.k., for example, the black boxes, once they've been found. we know the french foreign minister is very focussed on the black boxes, trying to find out what they can from them. so the immediate concern is recovering those as well, and then if airbus or the french investigators have the most expertise, and i'm sure the egyptians will lean on that and will potentially bring the black boxes to france or the u.k.

but it did depart from paris. how worried should people be that you may be getting on a plane in a western nation, but it wasn't necessarily checked from the last destination. >> that is a concern. and if it did get through paris, either way, whether it got through paris with something that was put on at an earlier stop or if a bomb or some other kind of device was put on the aircraft in paris, it's a significant blow to security, and it's going to shake people's confidence pretty badly. this is not something that can be looked at and say it's a one-off on everything. especially as you point out, the dgsi head came out and said, isis already told us they are coming after us, the french. they are coming after us. they did the charlie help dough, they did the attack that killed 130 people in paris. everybody is worried about egyptian tourism. you might want to look at french tourism as well. >> almost as soon as this information became public, the gop presumptive nominee donald trump put out a tweet and he more or l
