kelly: steve with the counter-protestors in boston but we begin with mollie live at the boston common. >> hi, this is one of the streets off of boston common. there's still a huge crowd of people, this is at least 100 people. the counterprotests has dispersed and the boston free speech rally which drew speakers that the state and the city felt would be hateful has also dispersed. this is a crowd that remains. we see a lot of signs here relate today fascism, we spoke with the police, spoke with a couple of police officers on the way over here and they described the crowd assort of the leftovers, the main crowd, counter-protestors and these were folks that choose to stay behind, the reports earlier today that they were throwing food at police officers, that there was scrimmage that is broke out and this is what remains in the street of boston after what was largely a peaceful day earlier. there were a few scrimmages and shovings of police officers, shoving through crowds as some of the rally goers or people that had different views tried to make their way on or through the boston common

boston, massachusetts. joining me now is brian le vin, the director of the study for hate and extremism at california state university. good to see you again. you and i watched the charlottesville attack and protest and counterprotest unfold in realtime last weekend and you told me the difference between alt-right white supremacist, white nationalist, neo-nazis, was basically same corn flakes, different box. what are you seeing right now in boston and over the course of the last week? do all of these groups want to associate with one another? are they the same thing? >> well, what's interesting is, particularly the critical mass centrality of it is the same thing, but the folks today were more like the jc diet kind of version. their bigotry, the depth of it, is a little less. they're not as overt and over the top. a lot of conspiracyists in there. but what's really interesting in the last week, we've seen a division within the alt-right itself over violent tactics, over terrible things that mrmr. mrmr. mr.

this boston free speech coalition is the one that is holding this demonstration downtown in the boston common area. but what's your understanding about whether this name free speech is indeed a facade, what the real intention is here? >> i agree with my old buddy, tim. how you doing? >> good. >> it's absolutely a smoke screen. and i agree 100%, if this rally was really about free speech, then let's have the aclu there and let's have other social thought that sometimes a target of people who want to sensor things. so considering that the content of the rally is all far-right, white supremacist, holocaust deniers really vile sentiments that are tending to cultivate fear and hate and strife in our society, by all means those people do have the right to say those things, and i would defend their right. i respect the aclu for defending the right to march in charlottesville. i think it's rally important and hopefully it taos way it's shaking down today is the counterprotests demonstrate first of all that the fear being espoused by the right is unfounded and second of all that diversity and h
