islander youngsters kinda head into the arts. for you, how did you get interested in the arts? how did you become an artist? rea: yeah, actually, when i was younger, i wasn't exposed to art very much growing up in the philippines. and then when i moved over here, art isn't really encouraged in my family. so, before i was actually a business major. i went to uc riverside, and then i came back to san francisco and kind of went to city college, and there, i accidentally took some art classes, and i really enjoyed it. so, i kept taking more and more until some of my instructors kind of encouraged me to keep doing it, and they nominated me for a scholarship to transfer to the san francisco art institute. and they said, "only one person could get it from city college," so i wasn't really expecting it, but i got it. so i ended up there and got my bfa in painting. and then, a few years later, i went to chicago for grad school, where they do a lot of interdisciplinary art. so that's kind of how i ended up as an artist. robert: yeah, urban
