mr. kushner is in an unusual position. he not only holds a senior office in the government, but he has access to virtually all of the government secrets by virtue of his being the president's son-in-law. >> john, you know, what this also shows, i would say, is that this investigation goes far beyond questions of collusion. mueller is also looking at financial ties, obstruction of justice. his investigation is wide ranging. >> it's very wide ranging, and that's in his charter. when he was granted authority, it not only included the russia issue but anything that came up in the course of his investigation. and i think these are the things that are coming up just in the natural course of an investigation, and he has every right to follow them. he is within his charter when looking at these issues. >> president trump said the mueller investigation, if it turns, they'll be looking at that. i want to know precisely what they're looking at in terms of jared kushner's dealings. it may implicate kushner's precise dealings. mr. muel

the significance of this is not that mr. kushner was talking to foreigners. i look at his access and the access of the trump team and i say that's an advantage in america. they have a relationship with people overseas like russia that is almost unique in the american government. the problem he has is not that he met with people but that he didn't report the meeting and those in the security business say when you don't report it that gives you vulnerability to countries as you see here saying maybe he's exploitable. >> you worked for the director of national intelligence, you served in the marine corps for 25 years, what are the potential risks that the u.s. law enforcement or u.s. intelligence community sees why they're refusing to grant these top secret sei security clearances? >> there are a number of different risks. if we assume jared kushner does everything right with regard to his access to classified information, one of the biggest concerns here is that these other countries will do simply because jared kushner has influence and the position of authori

if people are targeting mr. kushner, that information came from our intelligence community and shouldn't have been released. however, what it suggests is that the problem is that mr. kushner didn't report these issues and the holdup on his clearance might have to do with debt and financial entanglements so he's in a very, very difficult position. so i can understand why countries might look at this and think of this. but if you put those things together, his failure to report, his naivete, and these reports, i can't imagine that he can continue in that job. >> you might be breaking news or at least you're giving us a strong analysis. and you may have coined a new word, did you say nonqualified, unqualified or what was the word? >> i'm less concerned about his ability to see our secrets, he works for the white house, he works for the president, than as americans, one of the most important jobs in history, dealing with the middle east, you have someone who's totally unqualified that's a bigger issue for all of us.

. >> in terms of mr. kushner and his security clearance, of -- obviously there is a question about the classified material but a question what is holding up his clearance. one of the big advances in your reporting is we've previously been told the fbi was having problems for a background check for a security clearance application and as of february 9th, the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein contacted the white house and said there were serious remaining concerns about mr. kushner in terms of his background check, but what you're describing tonight is separate and apart from whatever is going on at d.o.j. and fbi with the question of his background check, there are concerns within the white house itself about his behavior as a white house official that themselves might be enough to block him from getting a clearance. that's how i'm reading it. is that a fair reading of what you've reported? >> yeah, it is. i think that you're right to zero in on this. we haven't really precisely known up until now wha

no concerns were raised about mr. kushner's application. it is true that it can take a long time for anybody to get their full security clearance. do you think and do you have any indication this is just part of normal process? >> from my understanding it's absolutely not part of the normal process. we're talking about 13 months now. we're talking about over 100 people in the administration who have not completed the process, but remember about jared kushner. remember he's had to make several amendments to his clearance, to his application. issues have been raised from day one. it's not my understanding at all that somebody of his level who makes consistent requests for classified information can have a position like this. now, the interesting thing is going to be who is going to win. is it going to be the clehief o staff? will the president listen to the chief of staff or overrule. we'll find out before week is over. >> i want to ask you about one o other thing regarding russia. the president tweeted obama was president up the and beyond t

as to his security clearance, mr. kushner has done more than what is expected of him in this process. the new clearance policy lnl affect mr. kushner's ability to continue to do the very important work he's been assigned by the president. that's impossible to believe. he reads the presidential daily brief and he can't have access to the information he needs? >> pretty much only the people in the white house who see hit the way. obviously jared kushner doesn't see hit the way. that's why he's been so frustrated with john kelly and fees like this is a direct attack on him specifically. which it kind of is. we did note that people were worried in the west wing to raise questions about the questions surrounding his, of rob porter's security clearance because they thought would it bring up the scrutiny on jared kushner's security. what will be interesting to watch is the dynamic of the west wing. not just how this affects jared kushner's day to day but essentially, this was a showdown between jared kushner and john kelly.

, mr. kushner has exhibited all of the indicators that when i was working in the white house would have led not only to losing your security clearance but losing your job. he omitted critical information from his financial disclosure forms and left out and we're talking about dozens of examples, meetings with foreign individuals, on his fbi security clearance forms. he con ducked his own private meetings against the vice of those in the national security establishment with figures from foreign powers. he has enormous and growing debts that make him a potential target for influns and now we learn that foreign governments did try to influence him. these are all the red flags, if he weren't the president's son-in-law, he would have been gone long ago, even in this administration, certainly in any prior one of either party. >> just to be clear, each country has talked about the fact they might be able to play him because of the various circumstances there, the post also reports that the nationa
