welcome to ford's theatre. my name is david kent and i'm the vice president for outreach and education for the lincoln group for the district of columbia. we are proud this year to help symposium with the abraham lincoln institute. i have the honor of introducing our first figure for this symposium. i am especially honored because our topic he will be discussing, lincoln and the natural environment. that is because, in addition to being a lincoln scholar and author of books and articles on a related, i am a lifelong career environmental scientist. i am very eager to hear what he has to say. is a professorc of english at roger williams university in bristol, rhode island. -- not far from where i did my early marine biology research and has served as the president of the lincoln group of boston since 2007. in addition to his many articles about abraham lincoln, he has written two books, the first published in 2002 was called "lincoln's moral vision" about the second inaugural address. the second was published thi

gerald ford takes over, you know, you have a great quote from ford in his, in the days that he came into office. he says -- and i think it's a direct quote, "the state of our economy not so good." [laughter] meg: right. it was sort of one of the gloomiest speeches, you know? [laughter] meg: no interruptions for applause, you know? and he really had this sort of doomsday mentality. and so did the advisers or around him, people like alan greenspan and william simon and donald rumsfeld and dick cheney, and they believed that the oil crisis was going to bring the united states down. because it was making us vulnerable on the international stage. the oil shortages were a problem for our country because we use so much in the aggregate, but proportionally, the shortage was an even bigger problem for our european and japanese allies who were even more dependent on oil imports. so they were incredibly worried, ford's policymakers, that in their sort of need to secure their own access to oil, that our allies would sort of break off from us. bill: we're going to make a quick trip through the ford a

giving out the impression that gerald ford was a stumble bum, when, in fact, ford was one of the best athletes, one of the most graceful individuals to occupy the white house. and ford could have tried to dispute this characterization of him, but he was shrewd enough to realize it would have been a waste of time. so he basically grinned and bore it. there was one particular occasion, and i don't remember exactly the context where he had a chance to make a little bit of a comeback. now, again, this falls in the category of you might need this punch line explained. but i'm going to go with it anyway. so chevy chase has been lampooning gerald ford for some while. and the two of them meet on some particular occasion. and -- and chevy chase sort of wants to let ford know that this is all in good fun. and so he says gerald ford, you are really actually a very good president. and ford without missing a beat said, and you chevy chase are a very funny suburb. every ford super duty truck is made in kentucky, all the lincoln navigators, ford escapes, et cetera. it is a powerhouse of automobile production, which, again, is why this issue is as critical as it is to us. >> 95,000 jobs at least in kentucky. >> at least. i don't know the exact number, but it has been a growing importance. you look at just, you know, toyota, it's the largest plant, as i said, and, you know, 900 jobs or something like that, 80 some odd hundred jobs associated with just that one plant. the ford plant, it is the most prolific ford truck production facility in the world and we're blessed to have in in kentucky. these have been expanding, both those facilities, toyota and ford have spent billions in recent years in expanding their operations. no sign of abatement on those fronts. >> there has been a lot of conversation here today about the tariffs on steel and aluminum and we heard earlier from some folks in industry saying that they were really hurting them. have you been feeling the effects in kentucky? >> there is, because you think about this, i mean, the 232 rulin

ford motor is going to be adding jobs to its plant in kentucky. they're going to be boosting production of the ford expedition and the lincoln navigator this summer. that's going to create 550 jobs at the kentucky truck plant. this move from ford, again, this is just being released, is coming as president trump continues to keep up pressure on gm to reopen a key plant in ohio. the president renewed criticism of gm over the weekend and it kept on going yesterday. he said the a automaker is moving too slowly. gm says it's not going to be pressured to open the plant. could politics play in any business decision. let's bring in jeff bellstein. we're getting the news ford frod about the expedition, we're getting news that cadillac is going to be coming out with a new ct-5 sedan but the chevy cruz in lordstown, ohio, they can't seem to sell the car. is that just a car problem and not a general motors versus president trump problem? >> that's exactly right. we're looking at a situation where in this country people just are not buying sedans the way they
