joining us now, david, abby phillip, and david gregory. abby, i want to start with you on the reporting about what william barr is doing. he's appointed john durham, who is the u.s. attorney in the state of connecticut, to launch a new investigation into the origins of the russia investigation, which is on top of the utah u.s. attorney, who has been looking into this vaguely. he was appointed by jeff sessions. and a doj inspector general investigation by michael horowitz, which should be completed soon. three is the charm here? >> well, bill barr kind of has to do this. i mean, one of the whole points of having bill barr in this role as opposed to jeff sessions, who the president grew to almost december pi decemb despise by the end of his ten e tenure, is having the confidence of the president. he has to take this step and put his own spin on it. that being said, it seems he has appointed someone who has the experience in doing this under both democratic and republican administrations. this is, in some ways, a durham specialty. i think tha

and abby phillip, white house correspondent. rachel, give us color of what transpired behind closed doors, where the democrats began in a heated debate about impeachment. >> yesterday was sort of a tipping point for a lot of house judiciary committee members, when they got news the white house was not going to allow don mcgahn to appear for testimony he was scheduled to give this morning at 10:00 a.m. another example of stonewalling from the white house. they were fed up. in their traditional monday night leadership meeting, four house judiciary committee members, who are also part of pelosi's leadership team, confronted her about this and said, look, it's time to begin an impeachment inquiry. it'd help us get the documents, the witnesses, the testimony that the white house has been stonewalling. pelosi and leadership, they basically pushed back. pelosi said that if we do this, it could undercut other investigations we're seeing in the house. there was some concern that voters don't really care about this issue, and perhaps it w

cnn abby phillip is live at the white house. and so abby, we know sources tell cnn the president was in their word erupted -- that he erupted after hearing speaker pelosi speaking out this morning. let's take some steps back. how did this whole news conference evolve complete with the podium signs and printed handouts? how did it come together. >> reporter: that was the big question. because one report -- when reporters were haste illy called into the rose garden they were greeted by that sign which was a greatest hits of all the president has been saying about the mueller investigation. but sources say this morning after the president heard what nancy pelosi had to say about him, he was livid. he was angry about those comments and you heard him bring it up repeatedly in that press conference. so aides went ahead and started putting together this poster. they had a printout that was also featuring a number of facts about the mueller investigation and the president likes to cite. but that -- that pamphlet they were handing out to

we've got a panel of very smart people around us here, but we have abby phillip at the white house, she was there with the president. abby, what stood out to you there from what was really a greatest hit list -- greatest hits list of the president's claims? >> reporter: yeah, jim and poppy, where do we even begin on this one? i think what really struck out at me was how angry the president was at robert mueller. i think he's come really full circle on this. in the days after the mueller report was released he acknowledged that mueller acted on rablly. today when he was asked do you still believe that robert mueller acted honorably the president not only did not say that but he accused mueller of being conflicted, he brought up this case in which mueller had some dispute with the president's golf club. he called mueller a never trumper. i think that in his comments today the president has really shown how irritated he has been by what has transpired over the last 24 hours. he said that mueller was basically, you know, a part of the never trump movement, part of the movement of people try

the great elephant in the room is the mueller report which as abby phillip rightly reporting was at the heart of robert mueller's report, the idea that mueller said categorically that there was meddling in 2016. of course this is something that donald trump can simply not accept because that in his view and in the view of many others i think would quite frankly call into doubt the veracity of his own election. so if we accept that it did happen then, u.s. intelligence agencies and leading officials are suggesting that this has not stopped, that it is continuing, so one has to believe that it will certainly be a factor moving into 2020. so the great question is why isn't this being discussed at the highest possible levels. >> given that we have seen projectiles as we reported earlier launched from north korea, that issue again front and center, before all of this though president trump on that call indicated his appreciation for russia's engagement with north korea. do you see russia as a growing player in these ongoing negotiations? because again, the last summit between kim jung-un and

cnn's abby phillip is there at the white house this morning. abby, tell us about these talks with the swiss and is the president considering using them as an intermediary, as it were, to diffuse the crisis? >> reporter: well, jim, president trump has made it very clear he wants to you can at that to the iranians. he thinks that that is the -- where this ought to be next and this visit by the swiss president is part of that strategy. it is a message to iran that he is serious about this. they gave that phone number, as you mentioned, a week ago, opening potentially those channels, but the iranians have rebuffed that and inside the white house there is also another dynamic emerging here. as the president has grown increasingly frustrated in recent days with some of his top advisers who he believes are pushing him toward military conflict with iran, this is the very thing that president trump campaigned against when he ran for president in 2016 and our sources tell us that this frustration has been growing particularly with john bolton who has sta

abby, i am curious what the atmosphere in the white house is this morning. after the barr testimony, before what could be the mueller testimony, where do they see things? do they think they are winning, for lack of a better word? >> they do. they think that barr's testimony probably could not have gone better for the president at least, although clearly barr's reputation is something of a lot of -- a matter of a lot of discussion, but for the purposes of the president of the united states, the white house thinks that barr held his ground, he held the line against questioning that the white house doesn't think broke any new ground really. they don't think that it created any problems for the president. i think this is where bill barr was really skillful. he refused to answer a lot of questions about what is right. not about what is legal, but what is right. he was asked repeatedly was it okay for the president to ask his white house counsel to get rid of special counsel robert mueller? was it okay for the president to do, you know, anything else? and bill bar

abby philip, you were at the white house today or covering the white house. we expect to hear from the president shortly as he departs to address the u.s. air force academy, the graduation today. what would the white house do? what's your sense of how the white house would handle this going forward? >> what we saw yesterday was a little bit unusual for the white house. it was a coordinated message. they decided soon after robert mueller spoke there was nothing there. they felt he really didn't break new ground. in some ways they are not entirely wrong about that. what mueller did was he explained what he wrote in his report and he explained why he didn't want to testify. but the president and the white house are going to try to make it as politically ditch cult for nancy pelosi as possible. trying to make it seem there is no alternative other than to impeach him which they think is something they can use to their political advantage by basically claiming mueller closed the door. he closed the book and it's time to move on. democrats refuse to do that. so that

cnn's abby phillip is live for us at the white house now. abby, what are sources telling you about how the president is feeling about mueller and today. >> reporter: earlier today, sources were telling us that the president was pretty even keeled about what was to come. and shortly after mueller gave his statement, white house officials were telling me that they felt that there was nothing to pit. one official described it as a nothing burger. and i think the sense that we are getting from the white house this afternoon is that they don't think that what mueller had to say really moved the ball in any substantiative way. however, to the extent that it might drive democrats toward impeachment, the response from president trump, the white house, and his allies is essentially, bring it on. a white house official telling me that this would be a great way for them to re-take the house of representatives, believing -- the white house believes that democrats will go too far on this. but there is a sort of lingering question about how the white hous
